It is a great way to work off those extra few pounds (kilograms for the younger generation) and a fun evening to boot. I am sure we will get a big crowd, tell your friends to come too. We need a big attendance to make up for February!

Groups of 8 or more qualify for a $1 discount so long as you warn me in advance. The class, which is free, will give you an idea of what we do as we teach all the dances the same way at the class and at the dance. I am sure you’ll want to stay and enjoy the dance which follows at 8 p.m..

What is a Ceilidh dance? It is informal, easy Scottish Country dancing in a relaxed style for all ages. We teach everything, no experience or partner required just a desire to have fun an ability to move to the wonderful beat of the lively music and to enjoy the company of other like-minded folk.

After a successful Love to Dance workshop and dance we went home to ready ourselves for a big adventure – not big for most of you but big for us. Sunday fortunately dawned bright and dry and I loaded up my backpack with a book or two, gloves, headgear and a change of shoes for Margaret – we had sent off a case with my son – and walked the 5 blocks to the bus stop. We took the bus to Bridgeport, changed to the Skytrain and got off at Granville.

It was busy downtown and we had to push our way through to walk down Georgia and down to Melville where we boarded another bus. It was fortunate that we were early as the bus soon filled up and latecomers had little choice of seats. It was an uneventful journey as we could not see through the steamed up windows. We arrived in Whistler and after a wrong turn (or 2) found our way to the coffee shop to wait for our son. He arrived and we all – 6 – piled into their borrowed car for the trip to their rented condo in Nicklaus North. It was very fancy. They had invited Australian friends from Hong Kong over for dinner and we spent a pleasant evening with them.

Of course we don’t ski, so they were off to check the kids into Ski School for 8:30 – 3:30 while David & Sarah went off to the slopes together. We enjoyed a lazy morning then walked in to Whistler to meet them. It is quite a hike and at least half of it on unploughed paths. Nice, but cold, and hard work slogging through the snow.

We had a quiet night and Tuesday was a duplicate of Monday except we had to meet David at the Gondola at 12:15 so an earlier start for us. We repeated the hike through the snow and arrived in time to meet David in the queue. It was a glorious day and the view from the gondola was amazing – we took many pictures but unfortunately our camera somehow got broken so I have removed the card and sent the camera away for repair. On arrival at the peak David hustled us over to the Peak to Peak which was truly out of this world. We were so lucky to make this trip on a cloudless day. Lunch followed and we took the gondola down while David and Sarah skied down. We met the kids and then it was time to catch the bus back home. A wonderful trip, thank you David & Sarah.

Jedburgh countryside

Have you got your tickets for the Heather Ball on March 17? How about the concert the next day. Muriel Johnstone is a renowned musician and there may be a guest joining her. The concert is on March 18 (even though it is listed in the White Cockade as March 19!) and is in Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 1440 West 12th Avenue, Vancouver at 3 p.m. Tickets are only $20 (if bought with a ball ticket you can save $5) and are available at rscdsvancouver.org/home/2018-heater-ball-tickets

Rannoch Moor

The next Ceilidh dance is on Easter Friday, March 30, 2018 at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver with the usual class at 7 pm and the dance following from 8 – 11 pm. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.

It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).

There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed on the website. Come along – check us out – the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that’s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club.
