Well we had a great ending to the Ceilidh Dance season thanks to all those who attended.\u00a0 We acknowledged the amazing contribution of the members of Calanais, those who helped at the door and did many other jobs and, of course, Alison without whose energy and enthusiasm the ceilidhs would not be the same and might not have survived.\u00a0 We gave each one a fuchsia hanging\u00a0basket as a taken of our appreciation.\u00a0 We had a wonderful night of lively dancing with some great music.<\/p>\n
The dances resume in September with a surprise guest musician from Scotland so you don’t want to miss this one.\u00a0 It is on September 28 so mark your calendars NOW!\u00a0 If you have a group of 8 or more everyone in your group qualifies for $1 discount off the amazingly low admission price of $15 ($10 for students).<\/p>\n
You have to let everyone in your group know the password you have chosen which you then relay to me (ceilidh@rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>) before midnight on\u00a0Wednesday, September 26.\u00a0 So get busy, put a group together be it student friends or a faculty celebration, or an office get together, or a bunch of friends, or a birthday\/anniversary\/start of a new semester\u00a0celebration, or whatever, we ‘d love to have you.<\/p>\n There are refreshments\/drinks (including beer, cider, juice, etc.)\u00a0available\u00a0for a donation\u00a0\u00a0 So apart from the fun and great exercise of Scottish Ceilidh dancing there is all the ingredients for a great\u00a0evening.<\/p>\n No need to be scared if you don’t know how – we will teach you and you won’t be the only newbie.\u00a0 Two left feet? we will show you how to use the right one – it doesn’t matter, no ones watching anyway!\u00a0 You will be a star before the night is out.\u00a0 Make it a date – it will be a night you won’t forget.<\/p>\n There is a “class” at 7 pm where we go over a few of the dances.\u00a0 The class is free as you don’t pay until the dance starts at 8!\u00a0 For those new to ceilidh dancing the class\u00a0is a great introduction and you will soon find out you are not the only one who does not know their left from right or back from front!!\u00a0 We teach everything and the dance follows the same format.\u00a0 Everything is very relaxed so you don’t have to worry about anything.\u00a0 If you can walk; you can dance.\u00a0 Wear flat<\/strong> comfy shoes and loose, layered clothing as it is warm work reeling and spinning.<\/p>\n What is a Ceilidh dance? It is informal, easy Scottish Country dancing in a relaxed style for all ages. We teach everything, no experience or partner required just a desire to have fun an ability to move to the wonderful beat of the lively music and to enjoy the company of other like-minded folk.<\/p>\n Bluebells at Kinclaven<\/p>\n \u00a0\u00a0Teacher Debbie Moon’s first graders were ‘What does it mean to be adopted?’, asked<\/strong> ‘It means’, said the girl, ‘that you grew<\/strong> <\/p>\n All those who are 30ish and under – don’t forget the Youth Weekend West next weekend in San Francisco.\u00a0 It is a great event and well worth the effort.<\/em><\/p>\n There is no Ceilidh dancing over the summer but there is still dancing events you can attend.\u00a0 There are the BC Highland Games and Scottish Festival on June 16 at Percy Perry Stadium in Coquitlam (it is within walking distance of the Skytrain station at Lafarge Lake.)\u00a0 There will be some Ceilidh dancing there along with a multitude of events.\u00a0 Check out the website at www.bchighlandgames.com<\/a><\/p>\n Of course you can be a part of the Games and get admission at a reduced price by joining in the massed demonstration of Scottish Country dancing.\u00a0 This is scheduled for 11 a.m. on June 16 but there are 3 practices on Monday evenings May 28, June 4 & 11 from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson St. Vancouver.\u00a0 It is recommended that you come to all these practices, which will be led by Mary Murray, but if you have to miss one then that is OK.\u00a0 Mary chooses easy, beginner\u00a0dances so you wont have a hard time but you have to learn how one dance flows into the next.<\/p>\n It is a lot of fun, so please come and be part of this colourful display of dancing.\u00a0 Sign up in person on Monday, May 28 or in advance by contacting Jean:\u00a0 jeanwag@shaw.ca – 604-371-1939 or Fran: fran.hillier1242@gmail.com – 778-285-1242.<\/p>\n Then there is Dancing in the Park – DITP – which is held every Monday evening from 7 – 9 pm at Ceperley Playground (near the fire engine & 2nd Beach) in Stanley Park starting June 18 until August 13 – no dancing if wet at 5.00 p.m. (if in doubt call 604-922-6842 or 604-224-6751.\u00a0 Beginner\/Tourist friendly dances are included in each nights programme along with favourites for more experienced dancers.\u00a0 DITP has been held every summer for over 60 years.\u00a0 This is friendly, social dancing that we enjoy sharing with everyone – watch & listen, or get up and try it out.\u00a0 No fancy footwork required – if you like the music, we’ll help you dance.\u00a0 Bring your families and visitors – the more the merrier.\u00a0 Remember that, unfortunately, the is Pay Parking throughout Stanley Park, otherwise DITP is FREE!<\/p>\n The next Ceilidh dance is on\u00a0Friday, September 28, 2018 at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver with the usual class at 7 pm and the dance following from 8 – 11 pm. The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. The cost is only $10.<\/p>\n Any person may join USCS and Scottish Country & Ceilidh Dancers are encouraged to show their support by doing so. There is lots of time for you all to get yourselves and your friends organized to come along for another fun, filled evening. Come and dance, it is lots of fun and really easy. The funeral was to be held at a cemetery in the Oklahoma back country.<\/p>\n As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost; and being a typical man didn’t stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late. I saw the backhoe and the crew. The funeral guy had evidently gone, as the diggers were eating lunch and the hearse was nowhere in sight.<\/p>\n I felt badly about this. I apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down. The vault lid was already in place. I started to play and the workers gathered around. I played out my heart and soul for this homeless man. And as I played Amazing Grace, the workers began to weep. I played like I’d never played before. Then I finished and started for my car.<\/p>\n As I was opened the door, I heard one of the workers say, “Sweet Mother of Jesus, I never seen nothin’ like that before.
