I hope we will have many more come to the Ceilidh Dance next Friday, October 26.\u00a0 The Ceilidh will follow the usual format with the “class” from 7 – 8 pm and the dance, with Calanais providing the music,\u00a0from 8 – 11 pm.\u00a0\u00a0Mark your calendars NOW!\u00a0 If you have a group of 8 or more everyone in your group qualifies for $1 discount off the amazingly low admission price of $15 ($10 for students).<\/p>\n
You have to let everyone in your group know the password you have chosen which you then relay to me (ceilidh@rscdsvancouver.org) before midnight on\u00a0Wednesday, October 24.\u00a0 So get busy, put a group together be it student friends or a faculty celebration, or an office get together, or a bunch of friends, or a birthday\/anniversary\/start of a new semester\u00a0celebration, or whatever, we ‘d love to have you.<\/p>\n
There are refreshments\/drinks (including beer, cider, juice, etc.)\u00a0available\u00a0for a donation\u00a0\u00a0 So apart from the fun and great exercise of Scottish Ceilidh dancing there is all the ingredients for a great\u00a0evening.<\/p>\n
No need to be scared if you don’t know how – we will teach you and you won’t be the only newbie.\u00a0 Two left feet? we will show you how to use the right one – it doesn’t matter, no ones watching anyway!\u00a0 You will be a star before the night is out.\u00a0 Make it a date – it will be a night you won’t forget.<\/p>\n

For those new to ceilidh dancing the class\u00a0is a great introduction and you will soon find out you are not the only one who does not know their left from right or back from front!!\u00a0 We teach everything and the dance follows the same format.\u00a0 Everything is very relaxed so you don’t have to worry about anything.\u00a0 If you can walk; you can dance.\u00a0 Wear flat<\/strong> comfy shoes and loose, layered clothing as it is warm work reeling and spinning.<\/p>\n What is a Ceilidh dance? It is informal, easy Scottish Country dancing in a relaxed style for all ages. We teach everything, no experience or partner required just a desire to have fun an ability to move to the wonderful beat of the lively music and to enjoy the company of other like-minded folk.<\/p>\n Dunure Castle against a stormy sky.<\/p>\n The next Ceilidh dance is on\u00a0Friday, October 26, 2018 (that is next Friday!) at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver with the usual class at 7 pm and the dance following from 8 – 11 pm. Pay at the door – $15 ($10 for students). Tell your friends etc. about the dances, they are lots of fun.<\/p>\n The dances are all held at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver (73rd and Hudson which is between Granville and Oak Streets). They are all held on Friday evenings and where possible the last Friday of each month – the exceptions are December (as we never schedule one) and January (because of Burns.)<\/p>\n =====================================================<\/p>\n View of Ayr from Doonfoot – just to show we had some sun<\/p>\n ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The horse drawn dray, carting the prisoner, was accompanied by an armed<\/strong> If he said YES, it was referred to as “ONE FOR THE ROAD”\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n If he declined, that prisoner was “ON THE WAGON”\u00a0<\/strong> We spent time in other places in Scotland other than the Isle of Arran so this week I thought I would include some pictures of where my sister lives – Doonfoot, Ayr after which to Kilbarchan then north.\u00a0 My sister-in-law and her bidie\u00a0in (Jim) took us across the country to Grantown on Spey – an area which we were unfamiliar with having spent most of our time on the west coast.\u00a0 From there we went to visit a friend in Lossiemouth.\u00a0 A lot of travelling but we took four days.\u00a0 Lovely countryside and some great views.\u00a0 We kept off the motorways but we wished at times we were able to stop more often and visit the nice little villages but we must not seem ungrateful and we were much indebted to Jan and Jim for all there driving without which we would surely have been stuck.<\/p>\n ********************************************************************************<\/p>\n The next regular Ceilidh Dance is the 4th FRIDAY of the\u00a0October – October 26, 2018; THAT IN NEXT FRIDAY!\u00a0 – I sure hope you can come and bring lots of friends. <\/strong><\/p>\n ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????<\/p>\n Shotgun wedding\u00a0 – A case of wife or death.<\/p>\n ===========================================================<\/p>\n Burns Statue in Ayr<\/p>\n My sister only drove locally so we had to catch a bus from Ayr to Largs to visit a cousin of ours.\u00a0 The bus drove through every town and village along the way which was interesting but it took 2 hours to get to Largs.\u00a0 Jim & Jan drove us down to Ayr but we decided to make our own way back to Kilbarchan so we caught a bus into Ayr where we boarded a train (Ayr station was closed due to falling masonry from the station hotel but a temporary station had been set up.)\u00a0 The train took us to Johnstone where we caught a bus to Kilbarchan.\u00a0 We felt very pleased with ourselves that we had made the trip so successfully except we got off 1 stop too late and had a longer walk than necessary.<\/p>\n yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy 2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. How old is he?’<\/p>\n ‘He’s 100 years old,’ says the old Scottish golfer. ‘In fact he golfed wi’ me this morning, and then we went to the topless beach for a walk and had anither wee dram and that’s why he’s still alive. He’s Scottish and he’s a golfer, too.’<\/p>\n ‘Well,’ the doctor says, ‘that’s great, but I’m sure there’s more to it than that. How about your Dad’s dad? How old was he when he died?’<\/p>\n ‘Who said my granddad’s dead?’<\/p>\n Stunned, the doctor asks, ‘You mean you’re 80 years old and your grandfather’s still living! Incredible, how old is he?’<\/p>\n ‘He’s 118 years old,’ says the old Scottish golfer.<\/p>\n The doctor is getting frustrated at this point, ‘So, I guess he went golfing with you this morning too?’<\/p>\n ‘No. Granddad couldnae go this mornin’ because he’s getting married today.’<\/p>\n At this point the doctor is close to losing it. ‘Getting married?? Why would a 118 year old guy want to get married?’<\/p>\n ‘Who said he wanted to?’ The Scottish Cultural Centre is a pretty unique and wonderful asset and space is available for rent to anyone or any group. The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the USCS website – www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> . The cost is only $10.<\/p>\n Any person may join USCS and Scottish Country and Ceilidh Dancers are encouraged to show their support by doing so. He couldn’t fly, so I took him under my wing. At\u00a0night, he would come home to our house for safety. During the day, he was\u00a0in the backyard of the house near where I found him. About 4 days after I\u00a0found him, I was holding him in my cupped hands when his mama comes by to\u00a0feed him. She had seen me around, I guess, because she just flew over, perched on my hand and then fed him. \nThere are Marula trees which grow in Africa. This is the fruit that is used in the \u00a0production of \u00a0Amarula Liqueur.
\nOnce a year, the tree produces a \u00a0very juicy fruit, which contains a large percentage of alcohol. \u00a0\u00a0Because of the shortage of water at this time of year, as soon \u00a0as the fruits are ripe, animals come there to help themselves to \u00a0protect from the heat and get nourishment. \u00a0What happens \u00a0next… you can watch for yourself!
