I seem to have been busy doing other things like preparing year end financial statements, budget for 2020, attending the Canada v Ireland men’s field hockey match in West Vancouver to determine who goes to the Olympics in Tokyo (Canada squeaked through), the usual gardening, watching tennis on TV as well as other sports, etc. etc.\u00a0 So I have not had time to get the newsletter out.\u00a0 I can’t believe it has been a month since the last one.<\/p>\n
We are fine but there just in not enough hours in the day even with the extra hour when the clocks went back an hour – maybe for the last time?\u00a0 We are having some bushes\/trees pruned so I have twice been out to clear up piles of twigs, branches and leaves left behind including yesterday in the rain for about 3 hours.\u00a0 I looked like a drowned rat but it was good to get 4 large bins filled\u00a0 for pick up tomorrow.\u00a0 Of course it is dry today but that was not the forecast and I am not the worse for wear apart from the usual stiffness from constantly bending and lifting heavy loads.\u00a0 The bridge ladies are coming next week so the focus will shift to cleaning the house!<\/p>\n

We hope the few who came out to the October ceilidh will bring all their friends on November 29 and those who were unable to come last month will not only come again but will tell all their work\/school mates to come along.\u00a0 As I said last month we need at least 72 paying attendees just to break even but with the low attendance at the October dance we really need everyone’s support.\u00a0 Tell people about the ceilidh dances, how much fun they are, how reasonable, the fact that you don’t need to know anything or need a partner, how patient the teacher is and what a great band we have.\u00a0 Word of mouth really is the best form of advertising and we ask you all to help us.\u00a0 This newsletter is being sent to over 390 subscribers, some of whom are not in the Vancouver area, so surely we can get 20% to come dancing.\u00a0 Maybe you were all studying for exams or whatever but please do come this month – it really is a fun evening.<\/p>\n

\nNovember 29; January 10; February 28; March 27 & April 24 that is the last Friday of the month except for December and January.\u00a0 Put them in your calendar now and don’t miss another great event.<\/p>\n
You can help by coming along, by bringing friends (and enemies!) by telling people about the Ceilidh Dances, by bringing a group of 8 or more so that you all qualify for a discount of $1 each.\u00a0 No partner or experience required and remember if you claim to have two left feet we’ll show you how to use the right one!<\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is the last Friday of November (29th) – that is a week on Friday.\u00a0 The dances will follow the usual format with the “class” from 7 – 8 pm and the dance, with Calanais providing the music, from 8 – 11 pm.\u00a0\u00a0Mark your calendars NOW!\u00a0 \u00a0Even if you can’t make it in time for the class; come to the dance, it is lots of fun.<\/p>\n
If you have a group of 8 or more, then everyone in your group qualifies for $1 discount off the amazingly low admission price of $15 ($10 for students).\u00a0 You have to let everyone in your group know the password you have chosen which you then relay to me (ceilidh@rscdsvancouver.org) before midnight on the Wednesday preceding the dance, that way you do not all have to arrive together.<\/p>\n
There are refreshments\/drinks (including beer, cider, juice, etc.) available for a donation\u00a0\u00a0 So apart from the fun, exercise and great music of Scottish Ceilidh dancing there is all the ingredients for a great evening.<\/p>\n
No need to be scared if you don’t know how – we will teach you and you won’t be the only newbie.\u00a0 You will be a star before the night is out.\u00a0 Make it a date – it will be a night you won’t forget.<\/p>\n

For those new to ceilidh dancing the class is a great introduction to Scottish Country dancing and you will soon find out you are not the only one who does not know their left from right or back from front!!\u00a0 We teach everything and the dance follows the same format.\u00a0 Everything is very relaxed so you don’t have to worry about anything.\u00a0 If you can walk; you can dance.\u00a0 Wear flat<\/strong> comfy shoes and loose, layered clothing as it is warm work reeling and spinning.<\/p>\n What is a Ceilidh dance? It is informal, easy Scottish Country dancing in a relaxed style for all ages. We teach everything, no experience or partner required just a desire to have fun an ability to move to the wonderful beat of the lively music and to enjoy the company of other like-minded folk.<\/p>\n Glen Torridon<\/p>\n The next Ceilidh dance is on Friday, November 29, 2019 at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver with the usual class at 7 pm and the dance following from 8 – 11 pm. Pay at the door – $15 ($10 for students). Tell your friends etc. about the dances, they are lots of fun.<\/p>\n The dances are all held at the Scottish Cultural Centre,\u00a0 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver (73rd and Hudson which is between Granville and Oak Streets). They are all held on Friday evenings and where possible the last Friday of each month – the exceptions are December (as we never schedule one but we have one in early January) and January (because of Burns.)<\/p>\n =====================================================<\/p>\n Glenfinnan<\/p>\n Scottish Country dance classes are well into the new season but you will be made very welcome if you want to come along – it is never too late.\u00a0 Now would be a good time to come to a class and see what all the fuss is about.\u00a0 Why not give us a try – you never know it just might be the fun exercise class that you have been looking for.\u00a0 Music, movement, memory, camaraderie, laughter and a sense of achievement are all things you will experience.\u00a0 Come on – what have you got to lose, most first classes are free.\u00a0 Look under the “classes” tab for a class near you.<\/p>\n ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<\/p>\n Johnny’s Mother looked out the <\/strong>window and noticed him “playing church” with their cat.\u00a0 \u00a0He had the cat sitting quietly and he was preaching to it. She She called out, “Johnny, stop that! The cat is afraid of water!”<\/p>\n Johnny looked up at her and said,\u00a0“He should have thought about that before he joined my church.”<\/strong><\/p>\n ****************************************************************************** ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????<\/p>\n The Stranger<\/span><\/u><\/p>\n A few years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family.\u00a0 The stranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mum taught me good from evil, and Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger… he was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies.<\/p>\n If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the future!\u00a0 He took my family to the first major league ball game.\u00a0 He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped talking, but Dad didn’t seem to mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Sometimes, Mum would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to the kitchen for peace and quiet.<\/p>\n (I wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.)\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger never felt obligated to honour them. Profanity, for example, was not allowed in our home – not from us, our friends or any visitors.\u00a0 Our long time visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and made my dad squirm and my mother blush.\u00a0 My Dad didn’t permit the liberal use of alcohol but the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular basis..\u00a0 He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly, and pipes distinguished.. He talked freely (much too freely!) about sex.\u00a0 His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing..\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced strongly by the stranger. Time after time, he opposed the values of my parents, yet he was seldom rebuked… And NEVER asked to leave.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our family He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was at first.
