Last week&#8217;s picture brought absolutely no responses so I don&#8217;t know if that means no one reads the newsletter or you are all too lazy to respond or no one knew the answer. You can look back at last week&#8217;s and most prior newsletters by going to our website at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org.\">www.vancouverceilidh.org. <\/a> maybe this week&#8217;s picture above will be easier?<\/p>\n<p>It looks like a rainy fall which, of course, we are used to in this part of Canada.\u00a0\u00a0 The temperature has dipped and snow is forecast for Whistler and the local mountains.\u00a0\u00a0 It has been a nice sunny afternoon and I should have been outside but I am too comfy and warm here in front of my compuer.\u00a0\u00a0 As well as this newsletter, I write a weekly serial story for some of my grandchildren.\u00a0\u00a0 The origins of the story goes back quite a few years when I started telling them to two grandchildren who are now too old for bed time stories.\u00a0\u00a0 The characters in the stoies are 4 baby dinosaurs called Sandy, Mandy, Candy and Andy and tells about all the antics they get up to.\u00a0 It does stretch my imagination and I hope those of the 6 and 4 year old recipients to whom I started re-telling (well re making up) the tales to this summer when they were here from London.\u00a0\u00a0 Writing it down takes much more time and thought and I have to try and watch my grammar and spelling!!<\/p>\n<p>The Ceilidh Dance last Friday had a good attendance including quite a few who were here for a wedding which was held at the Centre yesterday.\u00a0\u00a0 Brendan &amp; Claire have been coming to the Ceilidh Dances for some time and were keen to have some Ceilidh Dancing at their wedding and had asked if I would come and call dances for them.\u00a0\u00a0 Not surprisingly the bride and groom left after the first break and many of the other guests left soon after but we still had a good number to have a fun evening.\u00a0\u00a0 I hope everyone had a good time and that you will all help spread the word and bring more friends to future Ceilidh Dances.<\/p>\n<p>Because I was at the wedding I could not attend the Gleneagles Fall Dance.\u00a0\u00a0 I have not heard from anyone else who was there but I am sure it was a very enjoyable evening and am certain there would have been a great spread of goodies at the intermission.<\/p>\n<p>The wedding was great fun.\u00a0\u00a0 After dinner the bride &amp; groom, now married of course, along with their parents and another couple performed a special wedding ceilidh dance complete with glasses of whisky.\u00a0 After the cake cutting, a towering cake that they cut by swinging a sword horizontally through it so the top could be caught by a group holding a tablecloth &#8211; must be an Irish custom, the bride was Irish &#8211; the Halifax Wharf Rats took centre stage but, surprisingly they did not get too many dancers to come up as they are a good band.\u00a0\u00a0 In their breaks I taught some ceilidh dances.\u00a0\u00a0 In fact in the three sets they did 7 dances including some encores.\u00a0\u00a0 Naturally the floor was full for these dances &#8211; you know me I don&#8217;t let too many people sit out!!\u00a0\u00a0 They all seemed to have fun and I was able to promote the upcoming Ceilidh Dances.<\/p>\n<p>If anyone has any suggestions or complaints regarding the newsletter please let me know &#8211; <a href=\"mailto:ceilidh@rscdsvancouver.org\">ceilidh@rscdsvancouver.org <\/a>==============================================================<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><em>Maybe it&#8217;s true that life begins at fifty .. e.g. the pictures this week were all taken in the fall or autumn months.\u00a0\u00a0 That does not include the one that I do not know where it is. \u00a0 Of course that is not always possible such as when I want to include a specific picture or someone has requested a picture.<\/p>\n<p>We will soon be into the St. Andrew&#8217;s season and the Demonstration Team has a number of bookings in November.\u00a0\u00a0 But first they will be dancing next Saturday, October 27, at Marpole Days which is being hosted jointly by the Scottish Cultural Centre and, by their neighbours across the lane, the Taiwanese Cultural Centre.\u00a0\u00a0 The event will take place at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street starting at 11 a.m. and will feature many forms of dance from ballroom, to ballet, to Taiwanese and of course Scottish.\u00a0 The Demonstration Team will dance at 11:30 and the Inverglen Scottish Dancers will perform twice during the day.\u00a0\u00a0 The event, which is FREE!, will also feature different national foods.\u00a0\u00a0 Plan to come along and join in the fun.<\/p>\n<p>The Bairns&#8217; Ball is the next day, Sunday, October 27. \u00a0 The dance which is hosted by the Stave Falls Dancers is held in the Pitt Meadows Heritage Hall, 12414 Harris Road, Pitt Meadows from 2 \u2014 4:30 p.m.\u00a0\u00a0 Everyone welcome, refreshments will be served, come and encourage the children and have a fun afternoon to boot!!\u00a0\u00a0 Adults $7; non dancing children $3 while all children registered in a Scottish Country Dance class are FREE.\u00a0\u00a0 Information 604-462-9935<\/p>\n<p>Note that the organizers of the annual St. Andrew&#8217;s Ball in Vancouver have reluctantly decided not to convene the Ball this year.\u00a0 They write: <em>This decision has been met with a great deal of disappointment from many people.\u00a0\u00a0 Our hope is that the Ball will continue next year and for many years to come. We need some help in making this happen. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing. It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to get the basics learnt then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there also are Branches in Victoria and Seattle). There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2014 check us out \u2014 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. I occasionally hear of an event somewhere in our beautiful Province, on the Island or in the Interior, but don&#8217;t know all the details. This newsletter reaches out to some <\/em><strong><em>375<\/em><\/strong><em> subscribers (down 1!) from all over the Province, Country and to many other countries as well, so please send me the details of your event and I will only be too happy to include them.
