The next Ceilidh Dance is not until Friday, September 27. \u00a0 Same time, same place, same price, same amount of fun and entertainment.\u00a0\u00a0 Now it is up to you all to help by planning on coming along on September 27 and bringing loads of friends, family, acquaintances, etc. so we can end the season on a high note. Please do your best to spread the word.\u00a0\u00a0 There is of course the annual Ceilidh Dance in the Park which is part of the weekly dances held in the summer on Monday nights from 7 – 9 p.m. (weather permitting of course) in Ceperley Park which is near 2nd Beach in Stanley Park.\u00a0\u00a0 These dances start on June 10 and continue each Monday (except July 1) until August 12 and there are always dances for audience participation.\u00a0\u00a0 Come along, bring the family for a night out in the Park and join in the dancing.\u00a0\u00a0 The Ceilidh night is August 5 but it is fun every week.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0 exam days for some local budding Scottish Country Dance teachers are over much to their relief. \u00a0 The seven young ladies who took their exams all did very well although they will not get the results for nearly a month. \u00a0 Well done ladies – it is always far more stressful than it should be but part of that is self inflicted!\u00a0\u00a0 Thanks to Mary Murray, Rosemary Coupe, Jean Wagstaff for all their work and to the many dancers who came along in the past few months to act as a class so the teacher candidates could practise teaching.<\/p>\n

I am retired!\u00a0\u00a0 Silly me – I thought that would mean a nice quiet life and I would have lots of time to plan various things that I would like to do.\u00a0 It has not, at least so far and it is now over 2 years, turned out that way.\u00a0 Maybe I do things slower but it seems I am busier than ever.\u00a0 It is tax time and there are still a few older clients who like to at least see me at this time of year and that means appearing in the office and looking as if I know what I am doing still.\u00a0\u00a0 I try and set up these “appointments” to suit my schedule but that never happens.<\/p>\n

It may sound as if I am complaining.\u00a0\u00a0 That is not really the case although I would like time to slow down a tad.\u00a0 I need the Super Slow Downer that some teachers are using on their computers to slow down the dance music to slow down the pace of my days (and nights as they are often too short.)\u00a0\u00a0 I do enjoy my life, my family, my friends and the many people I meet as well as the various pastimes including dancing.<\/p>\n

Case in point – this letter is late (again).\u00a0\u00a0 Well we had a lot of work done on some of our large cedar trees on Thursday and Friday.\u00a0\u00a0 They thinned, pruned, etc. to try and give us a little more light and sunshine into our front garden and to raise the branches at the back so they were clear of the house and cars.\u00a0\u00a0 They did a great job and cleared up afterwards as well but some of the branches had fallen on the “lawn” and made some dents. holes etc.\u00a0\u00a0 I was at the Candidates exam classes on Saturday so after church yesterday I spent the afternoon filling the holes and spreading topsoil over the “lawn.”<\/p>\n

I started work on this letter but then family came for dinner and of course I had to stop and socialize, help with dinner, etc.\u00a0\u00a0 By the time they left it was nearly 9 and TV time with Mr. Selfridge, the Bletchly Circle and Monarch of the Glen which made it after 12 before we got to bed and just time to read a chapter or so. \u00a0 So now I am trying to get the newsletter finished, take the empties back to the Bottle Depot so I can finalize the statement for the Ceilidh Dances and hand over the money to the Branch, get my son’s tax return done (he finally gave me the information!). \u00a0 It was a wild windy night and morning and I have already been out to pick up loads of twigs and added them to the recycling before they came to pick it up.<\/p>\n

While the dance “class” season is drawing to a close there are still some places where classes are continuing (the West End for one although we are concentrating on the dances for the Fort Langley Tea Dance) and some others where there are special classes so check all these out.\u00a0\u00a0 There are also still at least 2 more dances to come including White Rock and Fort Langley and then there is the Youth Weekend West which this year is being hosted by a group in Vancouver Washington on the weekend of May 3 – 5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Check it out at www.youthweekendwest.com<\/a><\/p>\n

It is great exercise and fun, for all ages, too.\u00a0\u00a0 However there will be Dancing in the Park starting on Monday, June 10 where there are always dances for audience participation.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>The dances are held every Monday evening (weather permitting and with the exception of July 1) in Ceperley Park which is near 2nd Beach in Stanley Park.\u00a0\u00a0 Bring the family it is lots of fun.\u00a0\u00a0 Check the calendar of events for who is hosting.<\/p>\n

The format for all of the regular monthly Ceilidh Dances will be the same with the class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. and all dances will be walked and talked through. The price is only – $10 or $8 for students which, for what you get is a super bargain \u2014 everyone is welcome. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner. Don\u2019t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.<\/p>\n

It really is never too late to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes and well any time is a great time to do it. <\/strong> You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so<\/p>\n

For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime which is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing. It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to get the basics learnt then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there also are Branches in Victoria and Seattle). There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2014 check us out \u2014 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!!<\/p>\n

The next regular<\/strong> monthly Ceilidh Dance<\/strong> will not be held until Friday, September 27, 2013 <\/strong>in the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, (73rd<\/sup> & Hudson which is between Oak & Granville), Vancouver, We need everyone to help us get as many new comers (as well as former Ceilidh Dancers) as possible to come and join us. The Ceilidh Dances are a great way to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Invite all your friends along. Contact me if you will have a group of 12 or more and we can give them a discount!!! This is the last regular Ceilidh Dance of the 2012\/13 season and it would be great if we could end with a really big crowd.<\/p>\n

We Really NEED YOUR HELP to advertise the Ceilidh Dances!!!!<\/strong> It only costs $10 ($8 for students) – it is worth so much more in fun, exercise and camaraderie. Thanks to good attendances the finances for the 2012\/13 season will still allow the cost to be the amazingly low price of $10 or $8 for students and we provide refreshments although we do ask for your donations towards their cost.<\/strong> We always need your support both by coming along and by helping us to advertise these dances by whatever means you use to communicate with your friends be it e-mail, Face-Book, Twitter, Text or even telephone! Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening on exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn!<\/p>\n

There is a FREE class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/p>\n
