Last year we were hugely outnumbered by 50+ Japanese dancers in costume, and 60+ Philippinos, some half naked, dancing to music from enormous amps! We need a BIG and loud Scottish presence! Then I can keep you informed of timing, meeting place etc. and have an idea how many will come. It is truly a really fun experience!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

That was another fun dance last night.\u00a0\u00a0 Maureen Lyon put together an interesting programme of dances which everyone enjoyed even if there were a few mistakes.\u00a0\u00a0 The tartan Players had some super sets of tunes and all in all it was a very enjoyable evening.\u00a0\u00a0 We were also fed extremely well at the end and a few folk managed to come to the afyer party as well though it was quiet and peaceful after all the hard work put in by the White Rock members getting all the decorations up as well as the chairs and tables and of course there was all the food and drink to organize as well.\u00a0\u00a0 A huge thanks to Maureen, and all the WRSCDC.\u00a0\u00a0 Next year they will be celebrating a significant anniversary so make sure you get tickets as soon as they become available as I am sure it will be a splendiferous occasion.<\/p>\n

I am a bit stiff and sore not to mention suntanned as I have been out in the garden almost every day. \u00a0 I tried to till some of it, which is hard work with all the roots, and weed as I went along. \u00a0 I have filled 6 large cans to be picked up tomorrow. \u00a0 While the garbage men don’t have to pick up the regular cans as the trucks lift them automatically, they still have to dump the other cans into the new special cans so they can be dumped. \u00a0 I already have two extra large “green” cans and maybe should get another two as we often have to use the old cans as well. \u00a0 I have moved almost a yard of soil back into the garden so that, temporarily at least, the part of the garden I have done looks very good. \u00a0 Of course when we get back home there will be weeds everywhere and we will have to start again.<\/p>\n

My “to do” list is not getting shorter so I better get down to crossing things off in the next day or two.\u00a0\u00a0 As mentioned I will have to miss out a few weeks of newsletters soon so don’t be worried if you don’t get your usual e-mail on a Monday morning.\u00a0\u00a0 This will be the last one then they will resume again in June.<\/span><\/p>\n

My son Ian is joining the cycle to Seattle Fund Raiser for Cancer again.\u00a0\u00a0 You can check on his progress and, if you so wish, help him reach his huge goal of $15,000 at<\/p>\n

You are invited to dance in the mass Scottish Country Dance ‘DANCE SCOTTISH’ performance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rehearsals led by Mary Murray\u00a0will be held on the three Wednesdays prior to the Games (June 5th, 12th and 19th)\u00a0 7:30pm – 9:00pm at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver. Dances for the performance will consist of very basic steps and formations and therefore\u00a0suitable for dancers of\u00a0all levels.<\/span><\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is not until Friday, September 27, 2013 with live music by Calanaish.<\/strong> You have lots of time to spread the word<\/strong> about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. It is great exercise and fun, for all ages, too.\u00a0\u00a0 However there will be Dancing in the Park starting on Monday, June 10 where there are always dances for audience participation.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>The dances are held every Monday evening (weather permitting and with the exception of July 1) in Ceperley Park which is near 2nd Beach in Stanley Park.\u00a0\u00a0 Bring the family it is lots of fun.\u00a0\u00a0 Check the calendar of events for who is hosting.<\/p>\n

The format for all of the regular monthly Ceilidh Dances will be the same with the class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. and all dances will be walked and talked through. The price is only – $10 or $8 for students which, for what you get is a super bargain \u2014 everyone is welcome. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. It really is never too late to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes and well any time is a great time to do it. <\/strong> You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so<\/p>\n

For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime which is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing. It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to get the basics learnt then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there also are Branches in Victoria and Seattle). There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2014 check us out \u2014 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!!<\/p>\n

The next regular<\/strong> monthly Ceilidh Dance<\/strong> will not be held until Friday, September 27, 2013 <\/strong>in the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, (73rd<\/sup> & Hudson which is between Oak & Granville), Vancouver, We need everyone to help us get as many new comers (as well as former Ceilidh Dancers) as possible to come and join us. The Ceilidh Dances are a great way to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Invite all your friends along. Contact me if you will have a group of 12 or more and we can give them a discount!!! This is the last regular Ceilidh Dance of the 2012\/13 season and it would be great if we could end with a really big crowd.<\/p>\n

We Really NEED YOUR HELP to advertise the Ceilidh Dances!!!!<\/strong> It only costs $10 ($8 for students) – it is worth so much more in fun, exercise and camaraderie. Thanks to good attendances the finances for the 2012\/13 season will still allow the cost to be the amazingly low price of $10 or $8 for students and we provide refreshments although we do ask for your donations towards their cost.<\/strong> We always need your support both by coming along and by helping us to advertise these dances by whatever means you use to communicate with your friends be it e-mail, Face-Book, Twitter, Text or even telephone! Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening on exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn!<\/p>\n

There is a FREE class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/p>\n
