It is time that you all signed up to be part of the Scottish Country Dance Community in the Vancouver Canada Day Parade.\u00a0\u00a0 Cathrine would be very delighted to hear from you —<\/strong> <\/span>ccmusic@telus.net<\/span><\/a> or 604-299-6447.\u00a0\u00a0 The parade is on Monday evening so will take the place of Dancing in the Park so there is no excuse.\u00a0\u00a0 Please come along.\u00a0\u00a0 There will be some dancing but we also need people to carry the banners and flags and others just to walk along to make our group look bigger!!\u00a0\u00a0 It will be a great advertisement so please come along and support this wonderful activity.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Well the last picture brought just one response so either they are very difficult or you can’t be bothered sending me an e-mail or no one is reading the newsletters!!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Anyway the guess was correct as, for once, I actually recognize the scene.\u00a0 It was a picture of the Isle of Eigg taken from somewhere near Arisaig (not by me!).<\/p>\n

SFU’s Tartan Day celebrations featured the launch of the long-awaited “Scots in BC” website with information on how you can add your family history to the site. The website can be accessed at:

What a fun and very enjoyable BC Highland Games was held on Saturday in Percy Perry Stadium, Coquitlam.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Committee headed by Jim & Glenna really worked hard to put on a super show and IT WAS DRY!!!\u00a0\u00a0 Very difficult to guage the size of the crowd as the event is on such large grounds with each section drawing its own audience and leaving the grandstand less than half full.\u00a0\u00a0 I do think there were more than last year though.\u00a0\u00a0 Congratulations everyone on a job very well done.<\/p>\n

THE BAPTIST CHURCH DINNER!<\/p>\n

A group of friends from the Cottonwood Baptist Church wanted to get together on a regular basis, socialize, and play games. The lady of the house was to prepare the meal.\u00a0\u00a0 When it came time for Al and Janet to be the hosts, Janet wanted to outdo all the others. She decided to have mushroom-smothered steak. But mushrooms are expensive. She then told her husband, “No mushrooms. They are too high.”\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He said, “Why don’t you go down in the pasture and pick some of those mushrooms? There are plenty in the creek bed.”\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 She said, “No, some wild mushrooms are poison.”<\/p>\n

He said, “Well, I see varmints eating them and they’re OK.” So Janet decided to give it a try.. She picked a bunch, washed, sliced, and diced them for her smothered steak.\u00a0\u00a0 Then she went out on the back porch and gave Ol’ Spot (the yard dog) a double handful. Ol’ Spot ate every bite. All morning long, Janet watched Ol’ Spot and the wild mushrooms didn’t seem to affect him, so she decided to use them.<\/p>\n

The meal was a great success, and Janet even hired a helper lady from town to help her serve. After everyone had finished, they relaxed, socialized, and played ’42’ and dominoes. About then, the helper lady came in and whispered in Janet’s ear.<\/p>\n

She said, “Mrs. Williams, Ol’ Spot is dead.”\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Janet went into hysterics.
\nAfter she finally calmed down, she called the doctor and told him what had happened.<\/p>\n

The doctor said, “That’s bad, but I think we can take care of it. I will call for an ambulance and I will be there as quickly as possible. We’ll give everyone enemas and we will pump out everyone’s stomach. Everything will be fine. Just keep them calm”<\/p>\n

Soon they could hear the siren as the ambulance was coming down the road.\u00a0\u00a0 The EMTs and the doctor had their suitcases, syringes, and a stomach pump.\u00a0 One by one, they took each person into the bathroom, gave them an enema, and pumped out their stomach.<\/p>\n

After the last one was finished, the doctor came out and said, “I think everything will be fine now,” and he left. They were all looking pretty weak sitting around the living room and about this time the helper lady came in and whispered to Janet, “You know, that fellow that run over Ol’ Spot never even stopped.”<\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is not until Friday, September 27. Same time, same place, same price, same amount of fun and entertainment. Now it is up to you all to help by planning on coming along on September 27 and bringing loads of friends, family, acquaintances, etc. so we can end the season on a high note. Please do your best to spread the word. There is of course the annual Ceilidh Dance in the Park which is part of the weekly dances held in the summer on Monday nights from 7 – 9 p.m. (weather permitting of course) in Ceperley Park which is near 2nd Beach in Stanley Park. These dances start on June 10 and continue each Monday (except July 1) until August 12 and there are always dances for audience participation. Come along, bring the family for a night out in the Park and join in the dancing. The Ceilidh night is August 5 but it is fun every week.<\/p>\n

Last year we were hugely outnumbered by 50+ Japanese dancers in costume, and 60+ Philippinos, some half naked, dancing to music from enormous amps! We need a BIG and loud Scottish presence! Please contact Cathrine at ccmusic@telus.net<\/span><\/a> or 604-299-6447 to let me know you\u2019re interested. Then I can keep you informed of timing, meeting place etc. and have an idea how many will come. It is truly a really fun experience!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Parade will take the place of Dancing in the Park this year so you have no excuse. Come and join us in the Parade and let us make a great showing and be proud of our heritage, pastime. Bring the family, join in the fun.<\/span><\/p>\n

Well I am late again!!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It was a very busy week and I was out every night and busy every day.\u00a0\u00a0 Monday night for the “official opening” of Dancing in the Park with a great performance by the Vancouver Police Pipe Band as well as super dancing by the Demonstration Team which included a surprise dance live to the Pipe Band who played Nelson Mandela’s Welcome to Glasgow.\u00a0\u00a0 There was a good turn out and a pleasant evening with lots of fun dances.\u00a0\u00a0 Tuesday night I was out in Fort Langley enjoying Rebecca teaching a group of us some of the dances she will be teaching at Summer School in St. Andrew’s and then Wednesday after the dentist and some work at the office it was practising for the Massed Dancing at the Highland Games where I filled in for some missing people.<\/p>\n

Thursday was the Dem Team’s final practice for The Games so it was quite intense then at the end we had a short run through of dances we would be doing on Friday.\u00a0\u00a0 Friday afternoon we had an hour’s dem in a seniors home in Vancouver then I had a nap at Gerry’s before we gathered at another senior’s home in Burnaby for a 2 hour “pub”night along with some members of the Tartan Players.<\/p>\n

Saturday I along with 6 others worked at the South gate at the Games from 7:15 to 10:00, did a few other chores, danced with the Dem Team at 2:10 (they looked fabulous!), wandered around a bit then came home to shower, change into my other kilt and off to pick Davine up so she could be at the sound check by 6:45 then a fun Ceilidh followed with all proceeds going to the BC Lung Association.\u00a0\u00a0 Not sure how many were in attendance but I did get a goodly number up to dance and have fun and just maybe got some people to come down to the park, and\/or come to a Ceilidh Dance and\/or come to class.\u00a0\u00a0 Back home by 1 a.m. – a very long day!<\/p>\n

Sunday up to go and watch grandson #2 playing field hockey – he is 13 but has been selected to play for the BC under 16 #2 team and will be going to Brampton Ontario for the Canadian Provincial Championships – obviously following in his great grandfather’s footsteps.\u00a0\u00a0 In the late afternoon we took our 100 year old friend to see The Great Gatsby which was Margaret’s book club read this month and last night I had to get the financial statements done for the United Scottish Cultural Centre as there is a meeting on Wednesday so that or these are my excuses!!<\/p>\n

I still have not had time to find out how to reduce the size of the photo I took but here is another one of the same area.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Now no one had the answer so who can tell me where it is and who lives there?\u00a0\u00a0 We did not have time to see if he was in so we did not have any tea and scones although the trip was started in an attempt to find some tea and chocolate cake which was unsuccessful.<\/p>\n

In case you hadn’t thought of taking a vacation “down east” in New Brunswick – think about it. Teachers’ Assoc. of Canada Summer School is for all levels of dancer – they will have classes to suit all abilities. You will have wonderful teachers and musicians\u2026.some elective classes, including different dance forms..\u2026there are evening dances \/ Banquet and Ball \/ Ceilidh and optional tours during the week and at the end of the week for a few days\u2026. The next Ceilidh Dance is not until Friday, September 27, 2013 with live music by Calanaish.<\/strong> You have lots of time to spread the word<\/strong> about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. It is great exercise and fun, for all ages, too. However there will be Dancing in the Park starting on Monday, June 10 where there are always dances for audience participation. <\/strong>The dances are held every Monday evening (weather permitting and with the exception of July 1) in Ceperley Park which is near 2nd Beach in Stanley Park. Bring the family it is lots of fun. Check the calendar of events for who is hosting.<\/p>\n

The format for all of the regular monthly Ceilidh Dances will be the same with the class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. and all dances will be walked and talked through. The price is only – $10 or $8 for students which, for what you get is a super bargain \u2014 everyone is welcome. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner. Don\u2019t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.<\/p>\n

It really is never too late to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes and well any time is a great time to do it. <\/strong> You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so<\/p>\n

GIVE IT A GO!<\/p>\n

For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime which is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing. It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to get the basics learnt then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there also are Branches in Victoria and Seattle). There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2014 check us out \u2014 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!!<\/p>\n

‘That’s enough questions,\u00a0young lady! Honestly!’ \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The exasperated\u00a0mother walks away as the two friends begin to\u00a0play. <\/span><\/p>\n

‘My Mom won’t tell me anything\u00a0about her,’ the little girl says to her friend.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

‘Well,’ says the friend, ‘all you\u00a0need to do is look at her driver’s license.\u00a0 It’s like a report card, it has everything\u00a0on it.’ <\/span><\/p>\n

Later that night the little girl\u00a0says to her mother, ‘I know how old you are.\u00a0You are 32.’<\/span><\/p>\n

The mother is surprised and\u00a0asks, ‘How did you find that out? <\/span><\/p>\n

‘I\u00a0also know that you weigh 130 pounds.’\u00a0 The mother is past surprised and shocked\u00a0now.\u00a0\u00a0 ‘How in Heaven’s name did you find that\u00a0out?’<\/span><\/p>\n

‘And,’ the little girl says\u00a0triumphantly, ‘I know why you and\u00a0daddy got a divorce.’ <\/span><\/p>\n

‘Oh Really?’ The Mother\u00a0Asks. ‘Why?’<\/span><\/p>\n

The next regular<\/strong> monthly Ceilidh Dance<\/strong> will not be held until Friday, September 27, 2013 <\/strong>in the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, (73rd<\/sup> & Hudson which is between Oak & Granville), Vancouver, We need everyone to help us get as many new comers (as well as former Ceilidh Dancers) as possible to come and join us.<\/p>\n

The Ceilidh Dances are a great way to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Invite all your friends along. Contact me if you will have a group of 12 or more and we can give them a discount!!! This is the last regular Ceilidh Dance of the 2012\/13 season and it would be great if we could end with a really big crowd.<\/p>\n

We Really NEED YOUR HELP to advertise the Ceilidh Dances!!!!<\/strong> It only costs $10 ($8 for students) – it is worth so much more in fun, exercise and camaraderie. Thanks to good attendances the finances for the 2012\/13 season will still allow the cost to be the amazingly low price of $10 or $8 for students and we provide refreshments although we do ask for your donations towards their cost.<\/strong> We always need your support both by coming along and by helping us to advertise these dances by whatever means you use to communicate with your friends be it e-mail, Face-Book, Twitter, Text or even telephone! Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening on exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn!<\/p>\n

There is a FREE class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/p>\n

We need to attract students from UBC, SFU and all the other colleges and universities. Somehow we have to get word out to these students. Please do all you can to help us. Come one, come all to the same place (Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver) and the same time (7 p.m. for the class and 8 – 11 p.m. for the dance) and the same amazing price ($10 or $8 for students.)
