THE LEFTOVERS BECKONED – THE DARK MEAT AND WHITE, BUT I FOUGHT THE TEMPTATION WITH ALL OF MY MIGHT. <\/span><\/b> TOSSING AND TURNING WITH ANTICIPATION, THE THOUGHT OF A SNACK BECAME INFATUATION. SO, I RACED TO THE KITCHEN, FLUNG OPEN THE DOOR, AND GAZED AT THE FRIDGE, FULL OF GOODIES GALORE. GOBBLED UP TURKEY AND BUTTERED POTATOES, PICKLES AND CARROTS, BEANS AND TOMATOES.<\/span><\/b>

\nNew Dance Competition for Book 49
\n<\/b>Have you written a dance? Do you fancy trying your hand at writing a dance?<\/p>\n

The Vancouver Branch has been invited to submit one (1) dance into the world-wide competition for dances to be published by the RSCDS in Book 49.<\/p>\n

If you wish to submit a dance into the competition it must be emailed to Book49@rscdsvancouver.org<\/a> not later than December 10, 2013. <\/b><\/p>\n

To enter the competition you must be a member of the Vancouver Branch.<\/p>\n

A Vancouver Branch jury will review the submissions and submit the winning dance to headquarters in Scotland. <\/b>Submissions must never previously have been published in electronic or paper form or submitted for Books 47\/48. They should follow RSCDS terminology as closely as possible. Devisors may make only one submission.<\/p>\n

Full instructions and guidelines can be found at www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>    We hope to have a lovely lot of dances from which to choose THE Vancouver Branch Submission.<\/p>\n

On a bitterly cold winter’s morning a husband and wife in Glasgow were listening to the radio during breakfast.    <\/em>They heard the announcer say, “We are going to have 8 to 10 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the even-numbered side of the street, so the Snowplows can get through”. <\/em><\/p>\n

So the good wife went out and moved her car as instructed. <\/em><\/p>\n

A week later while they are eating breakfast again, the radio announcer said, “We are expecting 10 to 12 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the odd-numbered side of the street, so the snowplows can get through”. <\/em><\/p>\n

The good wife went out and moved her car again. <\/em><\/p>\n

The next week they are again having breakfast when the radio announcer says, “We are expecting 12 to 14 inches of snow today. You must park…….”  Then the electric power went out. The good wife was very upset, and with a worried look on her face she said, “I don’t know what to do. Which side of the street do I need to park on so the snowplows can get through?” <\/em><\/p>\n

Then, with all the love and understanding in his voice that all Scotsmen who are married to blondes always exhibit, the husband replied, “Why don’t you just leave the bloody car in the garage this time?”  <\/em><\/p>\n

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE<\/p>\n

What amazing weather – and it is supposed to stay like this all week.   We, especially this weekend, should be very Thankful.   At the service yesterday we were told to not just be thankful for all the good things that happen but also for the bad as they are our challenges in life.   Then at a wedding yesterday, at which I was calling some Ceilidh dancing, the groom’s mother was, sadly, in palliative care.   The Groom’s family attended the wedding service then left to go to the hospital.   Part of the Groom’s speech reiterated what we had been told in the morning when he said that he was so thankful for the joy he felt with his new bride but also for the outpouring of love and understanding for his mother.   It was a very poignant moment as the head table was half empty.<\/p>\n

They had fabulous music at the wedding with keyboard, flute, trumpet, guitar and voices.   I was there way too early but I wanted to hear the music.   It was a very lovely wedding and the Ceilidh dancing proved very popular.   Maybe some converts or at least a few more coming to the monthly Ceilidh dances.<\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is on Friday, October 25, 2013 (that is only 1 week this Friday) so call all your friends and bring them along to the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver with the class from 7 – 8 p.m. and the dance following from 8 – 11 p.m. with the live music of Calanais.   Admission at the door is only $10 (students etc. $8).   No partner or experience necessary – just bring your smiles and I would suggest flat, comfy shoes. <\/strong> kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk<\/p>\n

Seven year old Edward Yndenich, conducting the Student Orchestra of the State Conservatory of Music, Paskent, Ubekistan.  He became proficient in violin in one year and learned orchestral conducting in six months.<\/p>\n

Another week has flown by and I have to sit back and try and remember what all I did.   I am sure I was busy doing something other than a bit of garden clean up.   I did spray the path with a moss remover but will need to give it another coat and the same with the shed roof where I must have had the sprayer set at the wrong end so it was a very weak solution.   Oddly the path had to be wet before application whereas the roof was to be dry.   Well I am thinking Wednesday might be a good day to redo these sprayings.<\/p>\n

I see when looking back at my calendar that I danced and\/or taught every night and went to the office on two of the days.   Then I would have had to prepare two lesson plans and look out the music as well as get ready for the wedding.   Oh I went out to the wedding rehearsal to check out the sound system which wouldn’t work and was in a very awkward corner where you would crack your head on the stairs trying to get to it so that was a worthwhile trip – I took my own system!<\/p>\n

There will be a mini workshop entitled “An introduction to Ladies Step Dance”  on November 2.   This workshop is for dancers new to “soft shoe” step dance and also something new for returning dancers.   Scottish step dance experience  NOT required but some dancing in the past  essential e.g. Scottish Country, Highland, Irish, ballet, contemporary.   This will be an active afternoon for dancers interested in different steps, different music and lots of fun.   See Upcoming Events for more details and contact info.<\/span><\/p>\n

We have only one regret at our advanced age \u2014

The next Ceilidh Dance is on Friday – October 25, 2013 with live music by Calanaish.<\/strong> You still have lots of time to spread the word<\/strong> about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. The format for all of the regular monthly Ceilidh Dances will be the same with the class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. and all dances will be walked and talked through. The price is only – $10 or $8 for students which, for what you get is a super bargain \u2014 everyone is welcome. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.<\/p>\n

It really is never too late to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes and well any time is a great time to do it. <\/strong> You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so GIVE IT A GO! Go to either www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a> or www,vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> for a list of class locations and times.<\/p>\n

For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime which is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing. It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle). There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below.<\/p>\n

Come along \u2014 check us out \u2014 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> or www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Note that the latter website has the latest updates to temporary changes to times and locations as well there are classes all up and down Vancouver Island, a number of the Gulf Islands, the Cariboo, Okanagan, etc. etc. and there are various groups all over this great Province, Country, World and who knows where else! The Ceilidh Dances are a great way to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Invite all your friends along. Contact me if you will have a group of 12 or more and we can give them a discount!!! This will be the second regular Ceilidh Dance of the 2013\/14 season and it would be great if we could double the attendance of the dance last Friday night.<\/p>\n

We Really NEED YOUR HELP to advertise the Ceilidh Dances!!!!<\/strong> It only costs $10 ($8 for students) – it is worth so much more in fun, exercise and camaraderie. Thanks to good attendances the finances for the 2012\/13 season will still allow the cost to be the amazingly low price of $10 or $8 for students and we provide refreshments although we do ask for your donations towards their cost.  However if they remain as low as this season’s first Ceilidh dance then either the price will go up and\/or the dances will have to be cancelled.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We always need your support both by coming along and by helping us to advertise these dances by whatever means you use to communicate with your friends be it e-mail, Face-Book, Twitter, Text or even telephone! Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! There is a FREE class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. with music by Calanais.<\/p>\n

Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/p>\n

Come along and get some great exercise while also having lots of fun. We are still working on improving the strength of the smile muscles as well as the bows and curtsies! We need to attract students from UBC, SFU and all the other colleges and universities. Somehow we have to get word out to these students. Please do all you can to help us.<\/p>\n
