\nNew Dance Competition for Book 49
\n<\/b>Have you written a dance? Do you fancy trying your hand at writing a dance?\u00a0\u00a0 The Vancouver Branch has been invited to submit one (1) dance into the world-wide competition for dances to be published by the RSCDS in Book 49.<\/p>\n

If you wish to submit a dance into the competition it must be emailed to Book49@rscdsvancouver.org<\/a> not later than December 10, 2013.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 T<\/b>o enter the competition you must be a member of the Vancouver Branch.\u00a0\u00a0 A Vancouver Branch jury will review the submissions and submit the winning dance to headquarters in Scotland. <\/b>Submissions must never previously have been published in electronic or paper form or submitted for Books 47\/48. They should follow RSCDS terminology as closely as possible. Devisors may make only one submission.<\/p>\n

My wife and I walked past a swanky new restaurant last night.<\/em>
\n“Did you smell that food?” she asked. “Incredible!”<\/em>
\nBeing the nice guy I am, I thought, “What the heck, I’ll treat her!”<\/em>
\nSo we walked past it again.<\/em><\/p>\n

A week of mixed weather which was mainly dry although you would not have known that down here by the sea.\u00a0\u00a0 We had early morning mist, late morning mist and all day and night mist all of which left the ground very damp.\u00a0\u00a0 Yesterday we went to watch a grandson playing soccer and at times could not see the length of the pitch!\u00a0\u00a0 I want to spray our pathway and our shed roof with a moss remover but the instructions ask that the area be dry and no rain forecast for 12 hours.\u00a0\u00a0 Do you think I will get it done this year?<\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is THIS Friday, October 25, 2013\u00a0so it is time to call all your friends and bring them along to the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver with the class from 7 – 8 p.m. and the dance following from 8 – 11 p.m. with the live music of Calanais.\u00a0\u00a0 Admission at the door is only $10 (students etc. $8).\u00a0\u00a0 No partner or experience necessary – just bring your smiles and I would suggest flat, comfy shoes. <\/strong>\u00a0kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk<\/p>\n

The new mailing system comes with some interesting reports.\u00a0\u00a0 I can see who opens the newsletter and who doesn’t and how many reach different countries round the world.\u00a0\u00a0 You would be surprised that no newsletter goes to Myanmar but 1 goes to India, 5 to Hong Kong and 6 to Japan.\u00a0\u00a0 Just over 50% (last week’s newsletter was 56.9%) open the e-mail so I will have to do a study to see if most of those who do not open the e-mail each week don’t open it any week.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many enjoyable dances at the Gleneagles Fall Dance last night including quite a few that will be on the Ball programme in December.\u00a0\u00a0 There was a pretty good attendance too.\u00a0\u00a0 It was in a nice church hall with lots of room – maybe too much as our lines kept moving closer together even though we had court lines to help keep us in place!\u00a0\u00a0 It was good to see Stuart there – maybe not dancing but definitely smiling.<\/p>\n

We got home late and it was well after 1 a.m. before we were in bed\u00a0and were up to take in the White Rock workshop taught by Maureen Lyon this morning.\u00a0\u00a0 There were 28 dancers for the advanced class at 9:30 – well I say dancers but I was having trouble getting my feet and legs moving.\u00a0\u00a0 I only have 5 nights to dance this week before they will get a rest.\u00a0\u00a0 As always Maureen gave a very good class with some fun and interesting dances.\u00a0\u00a0 There were 32 dancers for the afternoon session which is great – I did not stay as I had work to do and this newsletter to prepare.<\/p>\n

First snow on the Cairngorms<\/p>\n

There will be a mini workshop entitled “An introduction to Ladies Step Dance”\u00a0 on November 2.\u00a0\u00a0 This\u00a0workshop is for dancers new to “soft shoe” step dance and also something new for returning dancers.\u00a0\u00a0 Scottish step dance experience \u00a0NOT required but some dancing in the past \u00a0essential e.g. Scottish Country, Highland, Irish, ballet, contemporary.\u00a0\u00a0 This will be an active afternoon for dancers interested in different steps, different music and lots of fun.\u00a0\u00a0 See Upcoming Events for more details and contact info.<\/span><\/p>\n

Several days ago as I left a meeting at our church, I desperately gave myself a personal TSA pat down.\u00a0 I was looking for my keys.\u00a0 They were not in my pockets.\u00a0 A quick search in the meeting room revealed nothing.\u00a0\u00a0 Suddenly I realized, I must have left them in the car.\u00a0 Frantically, I headed for the parking lot.\u00a0 My wife, Margaret, has scolded me many times for leaving the keys in the ignition.\u00a0 My theory is the ignition is the best place not to lose them.\u00a0 Her theory is that the car will be stolen.\u00a0 As I burst through the doors of the church, I came to a terrifying conclusion.\u00a0 Her theory was right.\u00a0 The parking lot was empty.<\/i><\/b><\/i><\/p>\n

I immediately called the police.\u00a0 I gave them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the pick-up, and that it had been stolen.\u00a0 Then I made the most difficult call of all, \u201cHoney,\u201d I stammered.\u00a0(I always call her \u201cHoney\u201d in times like these.) \u00a0\u201cI left my keys in the car, and it has been stolen.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/i><\/p>\n

There was a period of silence.\u00a0 I thought the call had been dropped, but then I heard Margaret\u2019s \u00a0voice. \u201cDuncan\u201d she barked, \u201cI dropped you off!\u201d\u00a0 <\/i><\/b><\/i><\/p>\n

Now it was my time to be silent.\u00a0 Embarrassed, I said, \u201cWell, come and get me.\u201d\u00a0 Margaret retorted, \u201cI will, as soon as I convince this policeman I have not stolen your car!\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/i><\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is on Friday – October 25, 2013 with live music by Calanaish.<\/strong> You still have\u00a0time to spread the word<\/strong> about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. The format for all of the regular monthly Ceilidh Dances will be the same with the class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. and all dances will be walked and talked through. The price is only – $10 or $8 for students which, for what you get is a super bargain \u2014 everyone is welcome. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner.<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.<\/span><\/p>\n

It really is never too late to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes and well any time is a great time to do it. <\/strong> You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so GIVE IT A GO! For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime which is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing. It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is\u00a0also a Branch in\u00a0Seattle). There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below.<\/p>\n

Come along \u2014 check us out \u2014 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> or www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Note that the latter website has the latest updates to temporary changes to times and locations as well there are classes all up and down Vancouver Island, a number of the Gulf Islands, the Cariboo, Okanagan, etc. etc. and there are various groups all over this great Province, Country, World and who knows where else! This will be the second regular Ceilidh Dance of the 2013\/14 season and it would be great if we could double the attendance of the dance last month.<\/span><\/p>\n

We Really NEED YOUR HELP to advertise the Ceilidh Dances!!!!<\/strong> It only costs $10 ($8 for students) – it is worth so much more in fun, exercise and camaraderie. Thanks to good attendances the finances for the 2012\/13 season will still allow the cost to be the amazingly low price of $10 or $8 for students and we provide refreshments although we do ask for your donations towards their cost.\u00a0 However if attendance remains as low as this season’s first Ceilidh dance then either the price will go up and\/or the dances will have to be cancelled.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

We always need your support both by coming along and by helping us to advertise these dances by whatever means you use to communicate with your friends be it e-mail, Face-Book, Twitter, Text or even telephone! Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! There is a FREE class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. with music by Calanais.<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/span><\/p>\n
