\u00a0The St. Andrew’s Ball<\/span> <\/strong>has been held in Vancouver for many years.\u00a0\u00a0 It is not organized by the Vancouver Branch RSCDS but by the Saltire Society.\u00a0 This year the committee is a new and younger group who are enthusiastically working to provide a great evening of entertainment and fun.\u00a0\u00a0 Of course there will be some dancing but the dances are more the Ceilidh style of dances and the dance programme does not vary much from one year to the next.\u00a0 There are classes for the dances and these are listed on the events list below and under “Events” on the webpage www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a><\/p>\n

This year the ball is being held in the Hellenic Community Centre, 4500 Arbutus \u00a0 Street, Vancouver from 6 \u2014 11 p.m. with the Vancouver Fiddle Orchestra.\u00a0\u00a0 Tickets $99 (30 & under $75) \u2014 info at \u00a0 standrewsball@shaw.ca<\/i><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It is unfortunate that the Ball conflicts with Delta’s Dance but this could not be avoided.<\/i><\/p>\n

Local news — New Dance Competition for Book 49 <\/b>Have you written a dance? Do you fancy trying your hand at writing a dance?\u00a0\u00a0 The Vancouver Branch has been invited to submit one (1) dance into the world-wide competition for dances to be published by the RSCDS in Book 49.<\/em><\/p>\n

If you wish to submit a dance into the competition it must be emailed to book49@rscdsvancouver.org <\/a>not later than December 10, 2013.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 T<\/b>o enter the competition you must be a member of the Vancouver Branch.\u00a0\u00a0 A Vancouver Branch jury will review the submissions and submit the winning dance to headquarters in Scotland. <\/b>Submissions must never previously have been published in electronic or paper form or submitted for Books 47\/48. They should follow RSCDS terminology as closely as possible. Devisors may make only one submission.<\/em><\/p>\n

At our recent meeting of the Highland Games Committee we identified some areas that we need volunteers for next year.\u00a0 Overall, the Games went very smoothly last year with a large number of new recruits to help us run the show. So going forward, we have identified a few areas that we really need help with – can you please ask your contacts and organizing committees and members as we need to fill these positions:<\/p>\n

Children’s Events Co-ordinator – organizing the line-up of events which is pretty easy to do, and day of just making sure everything runs smoothly<\/p>\n

Programs – this job takes more work in the last couple of months prior to the games, making sure all copy is submitted, having it put into a program and submitted to a printer.<\/p>\n

Sponsorship\/Advertising and promotion – Cher is going to do the social media aspect, Mary Jane may be around to help out again for sponsorship and advertising, but we need extra help. Someone to develop an advertising plan, to find new advertisers and sponsorships, and to be responsible for writing requests for grants and sponsorships from a list that the City of Coquitlam has provided.<\/p>\n

A police officer pulls over a speeding car.

The driver says,\u00a0‘Gee, officer, I had it on cruise control at 60; perhaps your radar gun needs calibrating. ‘<\/p>\n

Not looking up from her knitting the wife says:
\n‘Now don’t be silly, dear — you know that this car doesn’t have cruise control.’<\/p>\n

As the officer writes out the ticket, the driver looks over at his wife and growls,
\n‘Can’t you please keep your mouth shut for once !! ?’<\/p>\n

The wife smiles demurely and says,
\n‘Well dear you should be thankful your radar detector went off when it did or your speed would have been higher.’<\/p>\n

As the officer makes out the second ticket for the illegal radar detector unit, the man glowers at his wife and says through clenched teeth,
\n‘Woman, can’t you keep your mouth shut?’<\/p>\n

The officer frowns and says,
\n‘And I notice that you’re not wearing your seat belt, sir.
\nThat’s an automatic fine.’<\/p>\n

The driver says,
\n‘Yeah, well, you see, officer, I had it on, but I took it off when you pulled me over so that I could get my license out of my back pocket.’<\/p>\n

The wife says,
\n‘Now, dear, you know very well that you didn’t have your seat belt on. You never wear your seat belt when you’re driving.’<\/p>\n

as the police officer is writing out the third ticket, the driver turns to his wife and barks,
\n‘\u00a0W\u00a0ILL\u00a0YOU PLEASE SHUT UP??’<\/p>\n

The officer looks over at the woman and asks,
\n‘Does your husband always talk to you this way, Ma’am?’<\/p>\n

(I love this part)<\/p>\n

‘Only when he’s been drinking<\/p>\n

Managed to spray the shed roof to try to get rid of the moss earlier this past week and hope it was dry enough.\u00a0\u00a0 Maybe you don’t remember that far back but we did get some nice sunny days at the start of the week.\u00a0\u00a0 Now today is much more like Vancouver with heavy rain which is forecast as showers but the showers stop as a new one begins!!\u00a0\u00a0 I remember a few years ago some new friends arrived from somewhere in the USA just at the start of 40 consecutive days of rain!!\u00a0\u00a0 Just normal we said!!\u00a0\u00a0 I think they nearly moved back.<\/p>\n

No dancing this weekend and my feet are thankful for it.\u00a0 We had planned on starting the fall cleanup of our garden yesterday.\u00a0 There is much to prune, remove, dig over, rake, etc. but luckily it rained very heavily.\u00a0\u00a0 Margaret then switched gears to cleaning up the house and I tried my best to work hard on the computer getting the newsletter started etc.\u00a0\u00a0 I argued that then I would be able to garden today!!\u00a0 I did take my wife shopping yesterday so I do have some Brownie points.<\/p>\n

Judy Wallman, a professional genealogy researcher in southern California , was doing some personal work on her own family tree. She discovered that Senator Harry Reid’s great-great uncle, Remus Reid, was hanged for horse stealing and train robbery in Montana in 1889. Both Judy and Harry Reid share this common ancestor.\u00a0 The only known photograph of Remus shows him standing on the gallows in Montana territory.<\/i><\/p>\n

On the back of the picture Judy obtained during her research is this inscription: ‘Remus Reid, horse thief, sent to Montana Territorial Prison 1885, escaped 1887, robbed the Montana Flyer six times. Caught by Pinkerton detectives, convicted and hanged in 1889.’<\/p>\n

So Judy recently e-mailed Senator Harry Reid for information about their great-great uncle.<\/p>\n

Believe it or not, Harry Reid’s staff sent back the following biographical sketch for her genealogy research:<\/p>\n

“<\/b>Remus Reid was a famous cowboy in the Montana Territory . His business empire grew to include acquisition of valuable equestrian assets and intimate dealings with the Montana railroad. Beginning in 1883, he devoted several years of his life to government service, finally taking leave to resume his dealings with the railroad. In 1887, he was a key player in a vital investigation run by the renowned Pinkerton Detective Agency. In 1889, Remus passed away during an important civic function held in his honor when the platform upon which he was standing collapsed.”<\/b><\/p>\n

\n<\/i>The Doctor told him there is a simple informal test the husband could perform to give the Doctor a better idea about her hearing loss. \u00a0‘Here’s what you do,’ said the Doctor, ‘stand about 40 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a <\/i>response.’

The next Ceilidh Dance is on Friday, November 29, 2013 with live music by Calanaish.<\/strong> You\u00a0have\u00a0time to spread the word<\/strong> about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. It is great exercise and fun, for all ages, too.\u00a0<\/strong>Here is a link where you can watch a short video of a Ceilidh Dance: <\/strong>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0MvUwZnY9Ms<\/a>The format for all of the regular monthly Ceilidh Dances will be the same with the class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. and all dances will be walked and talked through. The price is only – $10 or $8 for students which, for what you get is a super bargain \u2014 everyone is welcome. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner.\u00a0 Don\u2019t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.<\/p>\n

It really is never too late to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes and well any time is a great time to do it.<\/span> <\/strong> You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so GIVE IT A GO! Go to either www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a> or www,vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> for a list of class locations and times.<\/p>\n

For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime which is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing. It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is\u00a0also a Branch in\u00a0Seattle). There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below.<\/p>\n

Come along \u2014 check us out \u2014 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> or www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This will be the second regular Ceilidh Dance of the 2013\/14 season and it would be great if we could double the attendance of the dance last month.<\/p>\n

It only costs $10 ($8 for students) – it is worth so much more in fun, exercise and camaraderie. Thanks to good attendances the finances for the 2012\/13 season will still allow the cost to be the amazingly low price of $10 or $8 for students and we provide refreshments although we do ask for your donations towards their cost.\u00a0 However if attendance remains as low as this season’s first two Ceilidh dances then either the price will go up and\/or the dances will have to be cancelled.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We always need your support both by coming along and by helping us to advertise these dances by whatever means you use to communicate with your friends be it e-mail, Face-Book, Twitter, Text or even telephone! Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! There is a FREE class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. with music by Calanais.<\/p>\n

Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/p>\n
