Thank goodness it was a lot warmer yesterday and the rain stayed off (just) as the Demonstration Team danced their final performance of 2013 outside at the Dundarave Festival of Lights.\u00a0\u00a0 The large tent enclosed some bleachers, the sound equipment, quite a few chairs and tables and left enough room for dancing.\u00a0\u00a0 It was hard as the surface was brick pavers and there were 2 drains to negotiate as well.\u00a0\u00a0 The Team danced three medleys which were well received then we got the audience up – we had 3 x 5 couple sets for the Virginia Reel, Gay Gordons and Riverside Jig all of which were danced to Christmas music played by Jim Lindsay (unfortunately not live but on a CD) and were enjoyed by all.\u00a0 We have already been asked back for the 2014 event.<\/p>\n

Alison commented “The information was gathered off websites etc. It is only the basics of the wealth of historical and current information available. I included only the older ‘regiments’ – there are many other corps and units, plus naval ships and Air Force squadrons – and Engagement or Battle Honour information up to World War II. There is much more about each regiment’s more recent activities in Korea, Afghanistan, Bosnia, and many Peace-keeping duties.”

Outside England\u2019s Bristol Zoo there is a parking lot for 150 cars and 8 buses.\u00a0 For 25 years, it\u2019s parking fees were managed by a very pleasant attendant.\u00a0\u00a0 The fees were for cars \u00a31.40 and for buses about \u00a37.00.
\nThen, one day, after 25 years of never having missed a day off work, he just didn\u2019t show up; so the Zoo Management called the City Council and asked them to send them another parking agent.\u00a0\u00a0 The Council did some research and replied that the parking lot was the Zoo\u2019s own responsibility.\u00a0 The Zoo advised Council that the attendant was a City employee.\u00a0\u00a0 The City Council replied that the lot attendant had never been on the City payroll.
\nMeanwhile, sitting in his villa somewhere on the coast of Spain or France or Italy …. is a man who\u2019d apparently had a ticket machine installed completely on his own, and then, had simply begun to show up every day, collect and keep the parking fees, estimated at \u00a3560 per day \u2014 for 25 years.
\nAssuming 7 days a week, this amounts to just over 7 million pounds …. and no one even knows his name.<\/i><\/p>\n

Many class parties etc. and I heard they were all super and the selection of food just amazing.\u00a0\u00a0 I did attend two and they were just what I said and the fun and camaraderie was great as well.\u00a0 What a fantastic recreation Scottish Country Dancing truly is and what fun, talented and interesting people we are!!<\/p>\n

The only thing left in 2013 (well I do have one more class to attend tomorrow night) is the Betwixt and Between dance on Saturday, December 28 (see information below.)\u00a0\u00a0 All members of the Vancouver Branch are admitted free of charge thanks to the generosity of a former member, Mary Wattum.\u00a0 For many years Mary always paid for the band for this dance and she wanted to make sure this would continue more or less forever.\u00a0 We are very grateful to Mary and continue this dance in her memory.<\/p>\n

A TRAM ran along Edinburgh\u2019s famous Princes Street for the first time in more than half a century last week.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/b>The 45m long vehicle successfully completed a test run from Haymarket along Princes Street to York Place in the early hours of the morning.\u00a0\u00a0 It travelled at walking pace while it was checked by engineers and contractors.<\/p>\n

After six years of construction, the trams are due to begin transporting passengers by May.\u00a0 The project has been hit by problems including a long-running dispute between the council and its contractor.\u00a0\u00a0 Work restarted last year on a more expensive but much shorter line. It was originally intended that trams would run from Edinburgh
\nAirport to Newhaven in the north for \u00a3545 million, but the route will now terminate in York Place in the city centre and cost \u00a3776 million.<\/p>\n

The Highland Games Committee still needs volunteers for next year. They need to fill these positions:
\nChildren’s Events Co-ordinator<\/strong> – organizing the line-up of events which is pretty easy to do, and day of just making sure everything runs smoothly
\nPrograms<\/strong> – this job takes more work in the last couple of months prior to the games, making sure all copy is submitted, having it put into a program and submitted to a printer. Sponsorship\/Advertising and promotion<\/strong> – Cher is going to do the social media aspect, Mary Jane may be around to help out again for sponsorship and advertising, but we need extra help. Someone to develop an advertising plan, to find new advertisers and sponsorships, and to be responsible for writing requests for grants and sponsorships from a list that the City of Coquitlam has provided.<\/p>\n

I received an e-mail last Tuesday asking me to add an event to the dance calendar.\u00a0\u00a0 It was for a Ladies Step Dance mini workshop on February 8, 2014.\u00a0\u00a0 Well I was informed on Saturday afternoon that this workshop is already sold out and a waiting list has been started.\u00a0\u00a0 I guess you have to be in the know.\u00a0\u00a0 maybe if the waiting list gets too long they will put on a second mini workshop.<\/p>\n

It was Christmas in our home yesterday as our branch of the family that live locally are going south for the holidays so even though only two could come it was a busy day with lots of preparations.\u00a0\u00a0 I must admit I did not do my share – Margaret did much more including the cooking and cleaning.\u00a0\u00a0 I did clean the driveway and the front path, sweeping up all the detritus blown down in the past week or so and a few other things.\u00a0\u00a0 I did not watch TV – we had music on though, light classical which I should put back on to help me think and concentrate while I get this newsletter put together.<\/p>\n

Well I have now purged the subscription list of those who have not opened a newsletter in the past month or two.\u00a0\u00a0 I sent them all an e-mail asking them to respond if they still wanted to remain on the list with a deadline for replies by yesterday and then I followed that up with another e-mail to those who still had not replied.\u00a0\u00a0 Originally there were 76 on this list but in the end I had to delete 52 names and addresses.<\/p>\n

Now subscriptions are back under the 400 mark. This newsletter will go out to\u00a0372 people in many cities, provinces & countries. Now my goal is still to get to 500!! The next Ceilidh Dance is on Friday, January 10, 2104 with live music by Calanaish.<\/strong> You have time to spread the word<\/strong> about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. The format for all of the regular monthly Ceilidh Dances will be the same with the class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. and all dances will be walked and talked through. The price is only – $10 or $8 for students which, for what you get is a super bargain \u2014 everyone is welcome. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner. Don\u2019t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.<\/p>\n

It really is never too late to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes and well any time is a great time to do it. <\/strong> You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so GIVE IT A GO! For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime which is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing. It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle). There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2014 check us out \u2014 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> or www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>. Note that the latter website has the latest updates to temporary changes to times and locations as well there are classes all up and down Vancouver Island, a number of the Gulf Islands, the Cariboo, Okanagan, etc. etc. and there are various groups all over this great Province, Country, World and who knows where else! This will be the third regular Ceilidh Dance of the 2013\/14 season and it would be great if we could double the attendance of the dance last month.<\/p>\n

We Really NEED YOUR HELP to advertise the Ceilidh Dances!!!!<\/strong> It only costs $10 ($8 for students) – it is worth so much more in fun, exercise and camaraderie. Thanks to good attendances last year the finances for the 2012\/13 season will still allow the cost to be the amazingly low price of $10 or $8 for students and we provide refreshments although we do ask for your donations towards their cost.\u00a0<\/strong> We always need your support both by coming along and by helping us to advertise these dances by whatever means you use to communicate with your friends be it e-mail, Face-Book, Twitter, Text or even telephone! Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! There is a FREE class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/p>\n
