A nice week to rest after the busy Burns season although it is rather cold, at least for Vancouver anyway, with temperatures dipping down to -7C\u00a0 and highs barely above freezing.\u00a0\u00a0 There has been glorious sunshine though but earlier in the week it was windy which made it even colder.\u00a0\u00a0 The weather prognosticators are telling us we may get snow tomorrow but that it will be short lived \u00a0as we will be back to normal rain by Tuesday at the latest.\u00a0\u00a0 I saw folk skating on the ponds in the wildfowl refuge which I have not seem for a long time.<\/p>\n

\"Febuary\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0on\u00a0Friday, February 28, 2014 <\/strong>– in the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver.\u00a0\u00a0 This is a fun and inexpensive way to have an enjoyable evening out with family and friends.\u00a0 Tell at least 2 friends to join you, forward this e-mail to more friends and encourage them to sign up for the newsletter and to come to the Ceilidh Dance.\u00a0 What a great way to have a fun, inexpensive night out and think of the great exercise you get as well which we all will need after these\u00a0chocolates we are expecting from our Valentine(s)!!<\/p>\n

It is time to register for the “Love to Dance” workshop which is on next of Saturday morning, February 15.\u00a0\u00a0 I see that the Level 1 class is full so you better get moving. \u00a0You can register online at www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/span><\/a> or pick up a form at any of the classes.\u00a0\u00a0 This is a super workshop for all levels and the teaching and musician staff are some of the best.\u00a0\u00a0 Don’t put it off – REGISTER NOW!!\u00a0\u00a0 The workshop was sold out last year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course you can all come to the Dance\u00a0in the afternoon following the workshop with music by the Tartan Players and a great programme for all levels.\u00a0\u00a0 See details at www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

The Highland Games Committee are planning a meeting of all interested in helping at the Games on June 21, 2014.\u00a0\u00a0 The meeting is scheduled for 7 pm in the Scottish Cultural centre on Monday, February 17.<\/strong><\/p>\n

They still needs volunteers for next year. They need to fill these positions: Children’s Events Co-ordinator<\/strong> – organizing the line-up of events which is pretty easy to do, and day of just making sure everything runs smoothly Programs<\/strong> – this job takes more work in the last couple of months prior to the games, making sure all copy is submitted, having it put into a program and submitted to a printer. Sponsorship\/Advertising and promotion<\/strong> – Cher is going to do the social media aspect, Mary Jane may be around to help out again for sponsorship and advertising, but we need extra help. Someone to develop an advertising plan, to find new advertisers and sponsorships, and to be responsible for writing requests for grants and sponsorships from a list that the City of Coquitlam has provided.<\/p>\n

Quiet week at least dance wise ending with a quiet Ceilidh Dance with just over 50 in attendance.\u00a0 We had a lot of fun and got through more dances than usual but that number will not support continuing the Ceilidh dances unless I raise the admission price which I am loath to do.\u00a0 That means it is up to all of you to get moving.\u00a0\u00a0 Set the TV to record your favourite shows, get off the couch, take a break from studying, come for a night of good exercise and lots of laughs.\u00a0\u00a0 The next one is on Friday, February 28 so ……….<\/p>\n

Last week I mentioned the snowdrops were up and out but this cold snap has hurt them.\u00a0\u00a0 We did some pruning last Monday and I hope it wasn’t too much.\u00a0\u00a0 I guess we will see in a few months time.\u00a0\u00a0 It looks very bare right now.\u00a0\u00a0 We have had to thaw the hummingbird feeders each morning and they are waiting for us to hang them back up.\u00a0\u00a0 We are not sure how many there are around.\u00a0 We did see three at one time but they are territorial and we have only seen one at a time at the feeders so don’t know if it is the same one each time or not.\u00a0\u00a0 We have not been introduced so are not on first name terms!!\u00a0\u00a0 Yesterday afternoon a Varied Thrush crashed very hard into the window and unfortunately did not survive.\u00a0\u00a0 It must have been being chased.<\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is the\u00a0on Friday,\u00a0February 28th, 2014.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Please call all your friends and arrange to bring them along to the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver to the class from 7 – 8 p.m. and the dance following from 8 – 11 p.m. with the live music of Calanais.\u00a0 Admission at the door is only $10 (students etc. $8) but unless we get a big increase in attendance the price will have to go up.<\/span>\u00a0 No partner or experience necessary – just bring your smiles and I would suggest flat, comfy shoes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is on Friday,\u00a0February 28, 2014 with live music by Calanaish.<\/strong> You still have time to spread the word<\/strong> about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. The format for all of the regular monthly Ceilidh Dances will be the same with the class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. and all dances will be walked and talked through. The price is only – $10 or $8 for students which, for what you get is a super bargain \u2014 everyone is welcome. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner. Don\u2019t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.<\/p>\n

It really is never too late to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes and well any time is a great time to do it. <\/strong> You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so GIVE IT A GO! For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime which is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing. It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle). There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2014 check us out \u2014 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> or www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>. Note that the latter website has the latest updates to temporary changes to times and locations as well there are classes all up and down Vancouver Island, a number of the Gulf Islands, the Cariboo, Okanagan, etc. etc. and there are various groups all over this great Province, Country, World and who knows where else! Thanks to good attendances last year the finances for the 2012\/13 season will still allow the cost to be the amazingly low price of $10 or $8 for students and we provide refreshments although we do ask for your donations towards their cost.\u00a0<\/strong> But low attendance this season might mean we have to look at increasing the admission in future.<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

We always need your support both by coming along and by helping us to advertise these dances by whatever means you use to communicate with your friends be it e-mail, Face-Book, Twitter, Text or even telephone! Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! There is a FREE class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/p>\n

Tony and Yvonne were 85 years old and had been married for sixty years. Though they were far from rich, they managed to get by because they carefully watched their pennies. <\/i>

\nThough not young, they were both in very good health, largely due to Yvonne’s insistence on healthy foods and exercise for the last decade.<\/i><\/p>\n

One day, their good health didn’t help when they went on yet another holiday vacation and their plane crashed, sending them off to Heaven.<\/i><\/p>\n

They reached the pearly gates, and St. Peter escorted them inside. He took them to a beautiful mansion, furnished in gold and fine silks, with a fully stocked kitchen and a waterfall in the master bath. A maid could be seen hanging their favorite clothes in the closet. They gasped in astonishment when he said, ‘Welcome to Heaven. This will be your home now.’ <\/i>

\nTony asked Peter how much all this was going to cost. ‘Why, nothing,’ Peter replied, ‘remember, this is your reward in Heaven.’<\/i><\/i><\/p>\n

Tony looked out the window and right there he saw a championship golf course, finer and more beautiful than any ever built on Earth..<\/i><\/i><\/p>\n

‘What are the greens fees?,’ grumbled Tony..<\/i><\/i><\/p>\n

‘This is heaven,’ St. Peter replied. ‘You can play for free, every day.’<\/i><\/p>\n

Next they went to the clubhouse and saw the lavish buffet lunch.<\/i><\/p>\n

‘Don’t even ask,’ said St. Peter to Tony. This is Heaven, it is all free for you to enjoy.’
\nTony looked around and nervously asked Yvonne ‘Well, where are the low fat and low cholesterol foods and the decaffeinated tea?’
\n‘That’s the best part,’ St. Peter replied. ‘You can eat and drink as much as you like and you will never get fat or sick. This is Heaven!’<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

‘No gym to work out at?’ said Tony
