But let me take you back to our class on Tuesday night where Lindsay came along to help teach.

Unfortunately what with people going off to New Zealand and other places and maybe the Olympics or the lure of new snow we only had 15 at the class including Lindsay and myself so we both had to dance as well as teach. Our class is in the Community Centre so we leave both doors open so others can see what we are doing. We often get people looking in and sometimes coming in to watch or even to join in. This was no different last week and when a young man came in and sat down to watch I did not pay too much attention. I had my back to him as I was teaching & dancing but I caught a glimpse of him passing me on his way to the stage & the corner where our equipment, music, notes etc. is kept. For some unknown reason I had left my wallet out in full view & I instinctively knew as he past me that that was his aim however he was too quick for me as he knocked over some things, snatched my wallet and was out the emergency exit in a flash.

Somehow, very foolishly, I gave chase and actually caught him in the rain & mud outside. He did not really struggle but claimed I was not to worry as he had dropped my wallet. I let him go of course to look down and he was gone. He had dropped a backpack he was carrying but he had kept my wallet. A member of staff went out to look but to no avail. I went to phone and cancel my credit & bank cards leaving the class to have some valentine goodies. Like the good teacher she will be Lindsay took control and started to teach the class a new dance as I was rather long on the phone. The class were very supportive but it shook us all up and we will be more vigilant in future. I did walk round the block after class in the pouring rain, Ally did offer me her umbrella, hoping that maybe the thief would just toss my wallet away but had no luck. I did phone the police when I got home and planned to rise early next morning to start the process of replacing driving licence, care card etc., etc.

I was, however, woken, no I was up but not dressed, by a phone call from a nice young man telling me he had found my wallet in a lane while out walking his dog. I arranged to go down to his flat (sorry apartment) to get it back and see what was missing and that turned out to be just the cash. Everything else was there including a little 1 inch square good luck card that my then girlfriend had given me about 1958 which I have carried everywhere ever since. She is still my girlfriend but now also my wife!!

I did not meet the person who found my wallet but I did meet his roommate and have invited them to come to class and the Ceilidh Dances. They refused any reward although I did send them a Starbucks card with my grateful thanks. So all worked out well. Yes I am short of the cash but I didn’t get harmed and I have retrieved all my other possessions thanks to the good Samaritans. Such excitement we have in our class – maybe you would like to come along and experience it yourself!! The next Ceilidh Dance is on Friday, February 28, 2014 (that is just one week on Friday) – in the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver. This is a fun and inexpensive way to have an enjoyable evening out with family and friends. Tell at least 2 friends to join you, forward this e-mail to more friends and encourage them to sign up for the newsletter and to come to the Ceilidh Dance. What a great way to have a fun, inexpensive night out and think of the great exercise you get as well which we all will need after these chocolates we got from our Valentine(s)!!

We really need to get a better attendance as numbers have been low and that means we are not covering our costs so that either we get the numbers up again or we will have to bump up the cost of admission. It is your hands.

There are other workshops coming up around the Province with one in Victoria on March 29, White Rock/Surrey on March 30 and another in Vernon on April 26. Check out the information listed under Upcoming Events

The RSCDS have a Booth at the Zoomer Show in the Vancouver Convention Centre on Saturday February 22 and Sunday, February 23. If you can spare an hour to help you can get free entry to the Show. Please contact Cathrine Conings Publicity Coordinator, RSCDS Vancouver Branch publicity@rscdsvancouver.org

Tickets are available now for all the Celtic Fest Events – info@celticfestvancouver.com The

Celtic Treasure Chest sent out a warning that Health Canada might be banning the sale of some Scottish products in Canada including Irn Bru and Jaffa Cakes!!

A series of 3 Ladies (Men too!) step dance classes are planned for February 22. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.

It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).

There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along — check us out — the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that’s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!!
