\"Spring<\/a><\/p>\n

OK it is late again and it is not entirely due to me being another day older it was just a very busy day yesterday and I did not feel like starting to write the newsletter when we got home just after 10 from a family dinner.\u00a0\u00a0 It is such a beautiful morning too but if I don’t get this done now I’ll never get it completed as this is shaping up to be another fun and busy week.<\/p>\n

It was the White Rock workshop yesterday and they had a great attendance.\u00a0\u00a0 I was only able to attend in the afternoon and there were more than 32 for the beginners portion including a few more advanced dancers who stayed on to help.\u00a0\u00a0 Maureen put us through our paces and had a very interesting selection of dances for us to learn and dance.<\/p>\n

On Friday night there was a young enthusiastic group of about 75 in attendance and we were well entertained at the first intermission by the Tam O’Shanter Dancers.\u00a0\u00a0 They performed two dances then demonstrated a dance called “It’s Nae Bother” then split up take partners from the audience and Maureen taught us the dance.\u00a0\u00a0 It was a fun night and we had another treat by being taught “Terrace Logger’s Jig” by the devisor, Kirsten Earl, who has been down from Terrace to visit, play with, baby sit, etc. her first grandchild, Callum.<\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0on\u00a0Friday, April 25, 2014\u00a0<\/strong>– in the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver.\u00a0\u00a0 Yes that is about a month away but\u00a0please make plans to come along as we really need all of you.\u00a0\u00a0 This is a fun and inexpensive way to have an enjoyable evening out with family and friends.\u00a0 Tell at least 2 friends to join you, forward this e-mail to more friends and encourage them to sign up for the newsletter and to come to the Ceilidh Dance.\u00a0 Think of the great exercise you get as well.<\/p>\n

Even though it was good attendance\u00a0last Friday we still really need an even larger attendance as numbers have been low and that means we are not covering our costs.\u00a0 \u00a0Either we get the numbers up again or we will have to bump up the cost of admission.\u00a0\u00a0 It is your hands.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Scottish Cultural Centre is a pretty unique and wonderful asset and space is available for rent\u00a0to anyone or any group.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the USCS website – www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> . Any person may join USCS and Scottish Ceilidh Dancers are encouraged to show their support by doing so. If any USCS member would like to be more involved then Darryl Carracher, the Manager at the Centre, will be pleased to give you further information. At the present time we need to replace the roof which will be a major expense and quotes will be requested from roofing contractors.\u00a0 Upgrades to the Centre are also being considered so it is particularly appropriate that dancers join USCS. No final decisions on these upgrades will be made before Members of USCS are fully informed.<\/p>\n

Can Cold<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Water Clean Dishes?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

This is for all the germ conscious folks\u00a0who worry about using cold water to clean.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

John went to visit his 90 year old grandfather\u00a0 in a very secluded, rural area of Saskatchewan\u00a0\u00a0 After spending a great evening chatting the night away,\u00a0 the next morning John’s grandfather prepared\u00a0breakfast of bacon, eggs and toast.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0However, John noticed a film like substance on his plate,\u00a0 and questioned his grandfather asking,\u00a0 <\/em>
\n‘Are these plates clean?’\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

His grandfather replied,\u00a0 ‘They’re as clean as cold water can get ’em.\u00a0 Just you go ahead and finish your meal, Sonny!’\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

For lunch the old man made hamburgers.\u00a0\u00a0 Again, John was concerned about the plates,\u00a0<\/em>
\nas his appeared to have tiny specks around\u00a0the edge that looked like dried egg and asked,\u00a0<\/em>
\n‘Are you sure these plates are clean?’\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Without looking up the old man said,\u00a0 ‘I told you before, Sonny, those dishes are as\u00a0clean as cold water can get them. Now don’t you\u00a0fret, I don’t want to hear another word about it!’\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Later that afternoon, John was on his way to a nearby town\u00a0and as he was leaving, his grandfather’s dog\u00a0started to growl, and wouldn’t let him pass.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0John yelled and said,\u00a0<\/em>
\n‘Grandfather, your dog won’t let me get to my car’.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Without diverting his attention from the football game\u00a0he was watching on TV, the old man shouted!\u00a0\u00a0 ‘Coldwater, go lay down now, yah hear me!’\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is this Friday,\u00a0April 25th, 2014 and there will be a short performance by the Branch Demonstration Team.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Please call all your friends and arrange to bring them along to the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver to the class from 7 – 8 p.m. and the dance following from 8 – 11 p.m. with the live music of Calanais.\u00a0 Admission at the door is only $10 (students etc. $8) but unless we get a big increase in attendance the price will have to go up.\u00a0 No partner or experience necessary – just bring your smiles and I would suggest flat, comfy shoes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Michelle has very kindly made up a Facebook event page for the Ceilidh but you need to “Search for Vancouver Ceilidh on Facebook and “Like” us to receive updates on upcoming Ceilidhs and other events”.\u00a0\u00a0 Then,\u00a0 if you “Like” the Vancouver Ceilidh FB page (do as described above), you too will receive updates AND be able to share those updates and events on your personal Facebook page to your friends and ask that they “Like” and “Share”, etc.<\/p>\n

Ceilidh Dances are great ways to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries etc.\u00a0\u00a0 Invite all your friends to come and join you at the Ceilidh.\u00a0\u00a0 You are welcome to bring your own cake and we’ll even sing for you!!<\/p>\n

CHURCH SQUIRRELS<\/b><\/p>\n

There were five houses of religion in a smal<\/b>l<\/b> town:<\/b>
\nThe Presbyterian Church,<\/b>
\nThe Baptist Church,<\/b> <\/b>
\nThe Methodist Church ,<\/b>
\nThe Catholic Church and<\/b>
\nThe Jewish Synagogue<\/b>.<\/b><\/p>\n

Each church and Synagogue was overrun with pesky squirrels.<\/b><\/p>\n

One day,<\/b> the Presbyterian Church<\/b> called a meeting to decide what to do about the squirrels. After much prayer and consideration they determined that the squirrels were predestined to be there and they shouldn’t interfere with God’s divine will.<\/b><\/p>\n

In<\/b> the Baptist Church<\/b> the squirrels had taken up habitation in the baptistery. The deacons met and decided to put a cover on the baptistery and drown the squirrels in it. The squirrels escaped somehow and there were twice as many there the next week<\/b><\/p>\n

The Methodist Church<\/b> got together and decided that they were not in a position to harm any of God’s creation. So, they humanely trapped the Squirrels and set them free a few miles outside of town. Three days later, the squirrels were back.<\/b><\/p>\n

But —<\/b> The Catholic Church<\/b> came up with the best and most effective solution. They baptized the squirrels and registered them as members of the church.<\/b><\/p>\n

Now they only see them on Christmas , Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday and Easter. <\/b><\/i><\/b><\/em><\/p>\n

Not much was heard about the Jewish Synagogue, but they took one squirrel and had a short service with him called circumcision and they haven’t seen a squirrel on the property since.
\n<\/b><\/p>\n

The boss wondered why one of his most valued employees was absent but had not phoned in sick one day. Needing to have an urgent problem with one of the main computers resolved, he dialled the employee’s home phone number and was greeted with a\u00a0child’s whisper. ‘\u00a0Hello<\/i>\u00a0<\/i>?<\/i>\u00a0<\/i>‘<\/i><\/p>\n

‘Is your daddy home?’ he asked.<\/i><\/p>\n

‘\u00a0<\/i>Yes\u00a0<\/i>,’<\/i>\u00a0<\/i>whispered the small voice.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

May I talk with him?’\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

The child whispered,<\/i> <\/i>‘\u00a0<\/i>No\u00a0<\/i>.’<\/i><\/p>\n

Surprised and wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, ‘Is your Mummy there?’\u00a0<\/i>‘\u00a0<\/i>Yes\u00a0<\/i>‘<\/i><\/p>\n

‘May I talk with her?’ Again the small voice whispered,<\/i> <\/i>‘\u00a0<\/i>No\u00a0<\/i>‘<\/i><\/p>\n

Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave a message, the boss asked, ‘Is anybody else there?’\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

‘<\/i>Yes<\/i>\u00a0, <\/i>‘\u00a0whispered the child, <\/i>‘<\/i>a policeman<\/i>\u00a0.. ‘<\/i><\/p>\n

Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee’s home, the boss asked, ‘May I speak with the policeman?’\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

‘<\/i>No, he’s busy<\/i>\u00a0, <\/i>‘\u00a0whispered the child.<\/i><\/p>\n

‘Busy doing what?’<\/i><\/p>\n

‘<\/i>Talking to Daddy and Mummy and the Fireman<\/i>\u00a0, <\/i>‘ came the whispered answer.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

Growing more worried as he heard a loud noise in the background through the earpiece on the phone, the boss asked, ‘What is that noise?’<\/i><\/p>\n

‘<\/i>A helicopter<\/i>\u00a0<\/i>‘\u00a0answered the whispering voice.<\/i><\/p>\n

‘What is going on there?’ demanded the boss, now truly apprehensive. Again, whispering, the child answered,\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

‘\u00a0<\/i>The search team just landed a helicopter<\/i>\u00a0‘<\/i><\/p>\n

Alarmed, concerned and a little frustrated the boss asked, ‘What are they searching for?’\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

Still whispering, the young voice replied with a muffled giggle…\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is this\u00a0Friday,\u00a0April 25, 2014 with live music by Calanaish.<\/strong>\u00a0 There will be a short performance by the Branch Demonstration Team about 9 p.m.\u00a0\u00a0 You still have time to spread the word<\/strong> about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. It is great exercise and fun, for all ages, too. <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

The price is only – $10 or $8 for students which, for what you get is a super bargain \u2014 everyone is welcome. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner. Don\u2019t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.<\/p>\n

It really is never too late to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes and well any time is a great time to do it. <\/strong> You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so GIVE IT A GO! For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime which is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n

It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n

There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2014 check us out \u2014 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> or www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Note that the latter website has the latest updates to temporary changes to times and locations as well there are classes all up and down Vancouver Island, a number of the Gulf Islands, the Cariboo, Okanagan, etc. etc. and there are various groups all over this great Province, Country, World and who knows where else! The Ceilidh Dances are a great way to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Invite all your friends along. Contact me if you will have a group of 12 or more and we can give them a discount!!! This will be the Eighth and last regular Ceilidh Dance of the 2013\/14 season and it would be great if we could double the attendance of the last dance on March 28.<\/p>\n

It only costs $10 ($8 for students) – it is worth so much more in fun, exercise and camaraderie. Thanks to good attendances last year the finances for the 2012\/13 season will still allow the cost to be the amazingly low price of $10 or $8 for students and we provide refreshments although we do ask for your donations towards their cost.\u00a0<\/strong> But low attendance this season might mean we have to look at increasing the admission in future.\u00a0<\/strong> We always need your support both by coming along and by helping us to advertise these dances by whatever means you use to communicate with your friends be it e-mail, Face-Book, Twitter, Text or even telephone!<\/p>\n

Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! There is a FREE class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/p>\n
