\u00a0to the White Rock Scottish Country Dance Club<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

for a super party.\u00a0 And what a celebration they had and what a lot of effort all the club members put in to ensure that everything was done just right.\u00a0\u00a0 They made everyone feel welcome and the approximately 160 who attended the Dance on Saturday night had a great time.\u00a0\u00a0 I am starting this week’s newsletter on Sunday afternoon but I doubt if I will finish it today.\u00a0\u00a0 We got home about 3:30 after a great after party and tonight we are entertaining some 20 or more people for dinner including the band so I will have to help Margaret a wee bit!!<\/p>\n

The three band members arrived on Tuesday evening and Marian & Max have been staying with us while Jim stayed with the Lowes.\u00a0\u00a0 Marian hails from\u00a0Whitsome<\/p>\n

but now lives in California!!<\/p>\n

Max on the other hand comes from Penicuik<\/p>\n

and Jim from Pathhead<\/p>\n

They were super people to host and were absolutely nae bother at all and well what can you say about their music other than it was just brilliant.\u00a0\u00a0 They were kept busy as they played for the class on Wednesday night where they had to use the upstairs portion of the hall for some sets and then for the Ceilidh on Friday where it was a shame only about 60 folk came along and then, of course, for the big dance last night where 15o + tickets were sold.<\/p>\n

The dance was a huge success with a varied programme of dances and the super selection of tunes to accompany them.\u00a0\u00a0 It was great to see many former dancers who came along for the celebration and to listen to the music and watch us “dancers” struggling at times but having loads of fun none-the-less.\u00a0\u00a0 The floor was filled all night and the programme was completed in time to get all the tables out for an amazing “tea.”\u00a0\u00a0All the crew in the kitchen had done an amazing job and there was food for twice as many.<\/p>\n

Many, many thanks and congratulations to President David, Teacher\u00a0Maureen (33 years as White Rock’s teacher which in itself is quite the milestone) and to all the White Rock Club members.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Many of the members had made a centrepiece for the tables representing a dance and the effort put into these was indicative of the love for the club.\u00a0\u00a0 Once I have got some time I will download some pictures and let you see some of these works of art.\u00a0\u00a0 It is now Monday morning! and I probably won’t get this finished until\u00a0tomorrow, Tuesday.<\/p>\n

And here it is on Tuesday morning as I scramble to see if I can get this letter out before lunch as I have to go in to the office, the Cultural Centre then on to my class in the West End.\u00a0\u00a0 We had a pleasantly lazy last day with our guests and they should be arriving home shortly.\u00a0\u00a0 They were excellent guests and very nice warm people and will be very welcome to come back any time.<\/p>\n

The next regular Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0not until\u00a0Friday,\u00a0September 26, 2014\u00a0<\/strong>– in the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Start to\u00a0make plans to come along as we really need all of you.\u00a0\u00a0 This is a fun and inexpensive way to have an enjoyable evening out with family and friends.\u00a0 Tell at least 2 friends to join you, forward this e-mail to more friends and encourage them to sign up for the newsletter and to come to the Ceilidh Dance.\u00a0 Think of the great exercise you get as well. Of course there is one other Ceilidh Dance coming up\u00a0on Saturday, May 31 in the Scottish Cultural Centre.<\/strong>\u00a0 This one is a fund-raiser for the BC Lung Association.\u00a0\u00a0 You are encouraged to get your tickets beforehand\u00a0 – see info in Coming Events below or on the website.<\/p>\n

Obviously we were busy entertaining our guests last week so very little else done although we did plant a very nice yellow azalea which is being named MariMax after its donors.\u00a0\u00a0 I can see it out my window as I type and it will always remind me of the super time we had together.\u00a0\u00a0 This is another busy week as there is dancing every day with a practice last night, class tonight, Dems on Wednesday and Friday and Dem class on Thursday.\u00a0\u00a0 I have office work to get back to, the Highland Games Team to organise, lots of paper work to get off my desk not to mention the garden where the weeds (and plants) are thriving in this warm, wet weather.\u00a0\u00a0 It might help if I can get to bed before midnight too!!!<\/p>\n

\u00a0A man suffered a serious heart attack while shopping in a store. The\u00a0 store clerks called 911 when they saw him collapse to the floor. The paramedics rushed the man to the nearest hospital where he had emergency open-heart bypass surgery.<\/i><\/p>\n

He awoke from the surgery to find himself in the care of nuns at the Catholic hospital.\u00a0 A nun was seated next to his bed holding a\u00a0 clipboard, loaded with several forms, and a pen. She asked him how he was going to pay for his treatment.<\/p>\n

“Do you have health insurance?” she asked.<\/p>\n

He replied in a raspy voice, “No health insurance.”<\/p>\n

The nun asked, “Do you have money in the bank?”<\/p>\n

The Scottish Cultural Centre is a pretty unique and wonderful asset and space is available for rent\u00a0to anyone or any group.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the USCS website – www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> . Any person may join USCS and Scottish Ceilidh Dancers are encouraged to show their support by doing so. If any USCS member would like to be more involved, then, Darryl Carracher, the Manager at the Centre, will be pleased to give you further information. At the present time we need to replace the roof which will be a major expense and quotes will be requested from roofing contractors.\u00a0 Upgrades to the Centre are also being considered so it is particularly appropriate that dancers join USCS. No final decisions on these upgrades will be made before Members of USCS are fully informed.<\/p>\n

Michelle has very kindly made up a Facebook event page for the Ceilidh but you need to “Search for Vancouver Ceilidh on Facebook and “Like” us to receive updates on upcoming Ceilidhs and other events”.\u00a0\u00a0 Then,\u00a0 if you “Like” the Vancouver Ceilidh FB page (do as described above), you too will receive updates AND be able to share those updates and events on your personal Facebook page to your friends and ask that they “Like” and “Share”, etc. Ceilidh Dances are great ways to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries etc.\u00a0\u00a0 Invite all your friends to come and join you at the Ceilidh.\u00a0\u00a0 You are welcome to bring your own cake and we’ll even sing for you!!<\/p>\n

The Goldberg Brothers – The Inventors of the Automobile Air Conditioner<\/p>\n

Here’s a little fact for automotive buffs or just to dazzle your friends.<\/p>\n

The four Goldberg brothers, Lowell, Norman, Hiram, and Max, invented and
\ndeveloped the first automobile air-conditioner.\u00a0 On July 17, 1946, the
\ntemperature in\u00a0Detroit was 97 degrees.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The four brothers walked into old man Henry Ford’s office and sweet-talked his secretary into telling him that four gentlemen were there with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter.<\/p>\n

Henry was curious and invited them into his office.<\/p>\n

They refused and instead asked that he come out to\u00a0the parking lot to their car.\u00a0 They persuaded him to get into the car, which was about 130 degrees, turned on the air conditioner, and cooled the car off immediately.<\/p>\n

The old man got very excited and invited them back\u00a0to the office, where he offered them $3 million for the patent.<\/p>\n

The brothers refused, saying they would settle for $2 million, but they wanted
\nthe recognition by having a label, ‘The\u00a0 Goldberg Air-Conditioner,’ on the
\ndashboard of each car in which it was installed.<\/p>\n

Now old man Ford was more than just a little anti-Semitic, and there was no way
\nhe was going to put the Goldberg’s name on two million Fords..<\/p>\n

They haggled back and forth for about two hours and finally agreed on $4
\nmillion and that just their first names would be shown.<\/p>\n

And so to this day, all Ford air<\/p>\n

on the controls.<\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0not until\u00a0Friday,\u00a0September 26, 2014 with live music by Calanaish.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You still have time to spread the word<\/strong> about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. It is great exercise and fun, for all ages, too.<\/p>\n

Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner. Don\u2019t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.<\/p>\n

For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime which is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n

It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2014 check us out \u2014 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> or www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>. Note that the latter website has the latest updates to temporary changes to times and locations as well there are classes all up and down Vancouver Island, a number of the Gulf Islands, the Cariboo, Okanagan, etc. etc. and there are various groups all over this great Province, Country, World and who knows where else! Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! There is a FREE class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/p>\n
