2013\/14 #38"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Thanks-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4652\" alt=\"Thanks 2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Thanks-2.png\" width=\"220\" height=\"212\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<em><strong>to the White Rock Scottish Country Dance Club<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>for a super party.\u00a0 And what a celebration they had and what a lot of effort all the club members put in to ensure that everything was done just right.\u00a0\u00a0 They made everyone feel welcome and the approximately 160 who attended the Dance on Saturday night had a great time.\u00a0\u00a0 I am starting this week&#8217;s newsletter on Sunday afternoon but I doubt if I will finish it today.\u00a0\u00a0 We got home about 3:30 after a great after party and tonight we are entertaining some 20 or more people for dinner including the band so I will have to help Margaret a wee bit!!<\/p>\n<p>The three band members arrived on Tuesday evening and Marian &amp; struggling at times but having loads of fun none-the-less.\u00a0\u00a0 The floor was filled all night and the programme was completed in time to get all the tables out for an amazing &#8220;tea.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0All the crew in the kitchen had done an amazing job and there was food for twice as many.<\/p>\n<p>Many, many thanks and congratulations to President David, Teacher\u00a0Maureen (33 years as White Rock&#8217;s teacher which in itself is quite the milestone) and to all the White Rock Club members.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Many of the members had made a centrepiece for the tables representing a dance and the effort put into these was indicative of the love for the club.\u00a0\u00a0 Once I have got some time I will download some pictures and let you see some of these works of art.\u00a0\u00a0 It is now Monday morning! and I probably won&#8217;t get this finished until\u00a0tomorrow, Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>And here it is on Tuesday morning as I scramble to see if I can get this letter out before lunch as I have to go in to the office, the Cultural Centre then on to my class in the West End.\u00a0\u00a0 We had a pleasantly lazy last day with our guests and they should be arriving home shortly.\u00a0\u00a0 They were excellent guests and very nice warm people and will be very welcome to come back any time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The next regular Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0not until\u00a0Friday,\u00a0September 26, 2014\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; in the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Start to\u00a0make plans to come along as we really need all of you.\u00a0\u00a0 This is a fun and inexpensive way to have an enjoyable evening out with family and friends.\u00a0 Tell at least 2 friends to join you, forward this e-mail to more friends and encourage them to sign up for the newsletter and to come to the Ceilidh Dance.\u00a0 Think of the great exercise you get as well. <strong>Of course there is one other Ceilidh Dance coming up\u00a0on Saturday, May 31 in the Scottish Cultural Centre.<\/strong>\u00a0 This one is a fund-raiser for the BC Lung Association.\u00a0\u00a0 You are encouraged to get your tickets beforehand\u00a0 &#8211; The\u00a0 store clerks called 911 when they saw him collapse to the floor. The paramedics rushed the man to the nearest hospital where he had emergency open-heart bypass surgery.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>He awoke from the surgery to find himself in the care of nuns at the Catholic hospital.\u00a0 A nun was seated next to his bed holding a\u00a0 clipboard, loaded with several forms, and a pen. She asked him how he was going to pay for his treatment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Do you have health insurance?&#8221; she asked.<\/p>\n<p>He replied in a raspy voice, &#8220;No health insurance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The nun asked, &#8220;Do you have money in the bank?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He replied, &#8220;No money in the bank.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Do you have a relative who could help you with the payments?&#8221; asked the irritated nun.<\/p>\n<p>He said, &#8220;I only have a spinster sister, and she is a nun.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The nun became agitated and announced loudly, &#8220;Nuns are not spinsters!<\/p>\n<p>Nuns are married to God.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The patient replied, &#8220;Perfect. Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the USCS website &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishculturalcentre.com\">www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> . Any person may join USCS and Scottish Ceilidh Dancers are encouraged to show their support by doing so. If any USCS member would like to be more involved, then, Darryl Carracher, the Manager at the Centre, will be pleased to give you further information. At the present time we need to replace the roof which will be a major expense and quotes will be requested from roofing contractors.\u00a0 Upgrades to the Centre are also being considered so it is particularly appropriate that dancers join USCS. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/panda-ball.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4666\" alt=\"panda ball\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/panda-ball.gif\" width=\"51\" height=\"58\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/dragonflame.gif\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2014 check us out \u2014 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at <a href=\"..\/\">www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rscdsvancouver.org\/\">www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>. There is a FREE class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments.
