Another week has flown by and I am scrambling again to try to get the newsletter completed and out this evening (Mother’s Day).\u00a0\u00a0 It is a lovely day and despite still having a cough I joined other men to make up a male choir as is the custom for Mother’s Day in our kirk.\u00a0\u00a0 That meant an earlier start than normal as we had to have a quick sing through before the service.<\/p>\n

This week I have a series of “Loch” pictures.\u00a0\u00a0 Get your maps out to find where they\u00a0all are!!<\/p>\n

Margaret is out at Toastmasters so I managed to get a wee bit of gardening done including finally getting the lovely yellow azalea, that we were given by Marian & Max , properly planted.\u00a0\u00a0 We did have a formal planting with pictures before they left last Tuesday but it was all in a bit of a rush and I haven’t had time (or the weather was not nice) since.\u00a0\u00a0 I did a few other chores none of which will be noticed.\u00a0\u00a0 It is such a lovely day but I had to come inside to get this letter started.<\/p>\n

The next regular Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0not until\u00a0Friday,\u00a0September 26, 2014\u00a0<\/strong>– in the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Start to\u00a0make plans to come along as we really need all of you.\u00a0\u00a0 This is a fun and inexpensive way to have an enjoyable evening out with family and friends.\u00a0 Tell at least 2 friends to join you, forward this e-mail to more friends and encourage them to sign up for the newsletter and to come to the Ceilidh Dance.\u00a0 Think of the great exercise you get as well. Of course there is one other Ceilidh Dance coming up\u00a0on Saturday, May 31 in the Scottish Cultural Centre.<\/strong>\u00a0 This one is a fund-raiser for the BC Lung Association.\u00a0\u00a0 You are encouraged to get your tickets beforehand\u00a0 – see info in Coming Events below or on the website.<\/span><\/p>\n

This week sees our last class for the West End Scottish Country Dance Club on Tuesday.\u00a0\u00a0 Some of them are going to the Fort Langley Whisky Tea Dance so we have been practising the dances on that programme and will do so again this week if anyone else would like to join us you will be very welcome – 7:15 start at the West End Community Centre on Denman Street and I think it is a $6 drop in fee.<\/p>\n

A reminder about the Inverglen Scottish Dancers annual performance which this year is on Sunday, June 22 in the Magee School Theatre in Vancouver.\u00a0\u00a0 This is always a very enjoyable event and well worth the time and the cost.\u00a0\u00a0 See “Upcoming Events” for all the details.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Vancouver Branch Demonstration Team is still busy – we danced last Wednesday and will do so again this Wednesday and also at the Ceilidh on May 31.\u00a0\u00a0 The enlarged Team for the Highland Games starts practises this Thursday.\u00a0\u00a0 Unfortunately the main hall at the Cultural Centre is booked so we will have to\u00a0try to squeeze into the small hall until I can find a school gym.\u00a0\u00a0 It will be very cosy this week!!\u00a0\u00a0 The Tam O’Shanter Dancers also performed last Friday and I think it is their wind up class tomorrow night.<\/p>\n

The Scottish Cultural Centre is a pretty unique and wonderful asset and space is available for rent\u00a0to anyone or any group.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the USCS website – www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> . Any person may join USCS and Scottish Ceilidh Dancers are encouraged to show their support by doing so. If any USCS member would like to be more involved, then, Darryl Carracher, the Manager at the Centre, will be pleased to give you further information. At the present time we need to replace the roof which will be a major expense and quotes will be requested from roofing contractors.\u00a0 Upgrades to the Centre are also being considered so it is particularly appropriate that dancers join USCS. No final decisions on these upgrades will be made before Members of USCS are fully informed.<\/p>\n

Dancing in the Park is FREE!!! and no partner or experience necessary – just bring your smiles and I would suggest flat, comfy shoes.\u00a0\u00a0 Check the Coming Events listing as there is a theme for each night so join in the fun.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Michelle has very kindly made up a Facebook event page for the Ceilidh but you need to “Search for Vancouver Ceilidh on Facebook and “Like” us to receive updates on upcoming Ceilidhs and other events”.\u00a0\u00a0 Then,\u00a0 if you “Like” the Vancouver Ceilidh FB page (do as described above), you too will receive updates AND be able to share those updates and events on your personal Facebook page to your friends and ask that they “Like” and “Share”, etc. Ceilidh Dances are great ways to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries etc.\u00a0\u00a0 Invite all your friends to come and join you at the Ceilidh.\u00a0\u00a0 You are welcome to bring your own cake and we’ll even sing for you!!<\/p>\n

More than a little distraught, the Banker grabs his mobile and calls the
\npolice.\u00a0 Five minutes later, the police arrive. Before the policeman has a chance to ask any questions, the man starts screaming hysterically: ‘My Porsche, my beautiful silver Porsche is ruined. No matter how long it’s at the panel beaters it’ll simply never be the same again!’<\/p>\n

After the man finally finishes his rant, the policeman shakes his head in
\ndisgust.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ‘I can’t believe how materialistic you bloody Bankers are,’ he says. ‘You lot are so focused on your possessions that you don’t notice anything else in your life.’<\/p>\n

How can you say such a thing at a time like this?’ sobs the Porsche owner.<\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0not until\u00a0Friday,\u00a0September 26, 2014 with live music by Calanaish<\/span>.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You still have time to spread the word<\/strong> about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. It is great exercise and fun, for all ages, too.<\/p>\n

The price is only – $10 or $8 for students which, for what you get is a super bargain \u2014 everyone is welcome. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner. Don\u2019t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.<\/p>\n

For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime which is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n

It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n

\u00a0\"bat-blue\"<\/a><\/p>\n

There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2014 check us out \u2014 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> or www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>. Note that the latter website has the latest updates to temporary changes to times and locations as well there are classes all up and down Vancouver Island, a number of the Gulf Islands, the Cariboo, Okanagan, etc. etc. and there are various groups all over this great Province, Country, World and who knows where else! Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! There is a FREE class from 7 \u2014 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2014 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/p>\n
