The finale – in hindsight we should have had those nearer the stage to be kneeling down and the rest gradually rising so you could see the number 50 from the grandstand.<\/p>\n

Wasn’t that a Party!\u00a0\u00a0 From all the glowing comments I received from so many people, some of whom I had never met before, the whole show was a masterpiece.\u00a0 Thanks to Mary and Rebecca for planning the dances and for the over 80 who took part.\u00a0\u00a0 It was a wonderful, colourful display and everyone seemed to be enjoying dancing so we may have a few new converts.\u00a0\u00a0 The combined Team showed the fun, the good exercise, pretty good covering and the sociability of Scottish Country dancing while the Dem Team, in the middle of the performance, showed some intricate patterns and tried to include the figure 50 at the end.\u00a0\u00a0 Very well done everyone who took part.\u00a0\u00a0 You did the Vancouver Branch proud.\u00a0\u00a0 I hope you all enjoyed dancing as well as the Games themselves.\u00a0\u00a0 If anyone has some good photos of the dancing I would be very happy if you would e-mail them to me.<\/p>\n

It was such a beautiful day so we cannot blame the weather if it turns out the attendance was not very good.\u00a0 It is so difficult to judge how many people are in the stadium as the events are so spread out now with the Heavy events attracting a large crowd over on the east side while the pipers were up on the north fields.\u00a0\u00a0 The stands did not appear to be as full for the official opening and the early afternoon entertainment as they have been in precious years but I will have to wait and see how the finances shake down.\u00a0\u00a0 The beer tent seemed to be busy so that will help.\u00a0\u00a0 What is really needed is more volunteers to take charge of a number of key areas such as sponsorship; advertising and programme production.\u00a0\u00a0 It is a shame more people do not come forward to offer their help.<\/p>\n

None-the-less, Congratulations to the Highland Games Committee who managed to put on another enjoyable event.\u00a0\u00a0 Hopefully they will all agree to carry on and that we can get more people involved.\u00a0\u00a0 It was unfortunate that Mr. Fraser’s wife took ill as he was supposed to be the Chieftain of the Day however, as the saying goes, the best laid plans …<\/p>\n

Some sad news received last week –<\/span><\/p>\n

the passing of an RSCDS icon on June 18th. \u00a0John Drewry<\/span> celebrated his 90th birthday last year.\u00a0\u00a0 There are very few dance programmes around the globe that do not have at least one of John’s dances included.<\/span><\/p>\n

The next regular Ceilidh Dance is not until Friday, September 26, 2014 <\/strong>– in the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver. Start to make plans to come along as we really need all of you. This is a fun and inexpensive way to have an enjoyable evening out with family and friends. Tell at least 2 friends to join you, forward this e-mail to more friends and encourage them to sign up for the newsletter and to come to the Ceilidh Dance. Think of the great exercise you get as well.<\/p>\n

The Scottish Cultural Centre<\/span> is a pretty unique and wonderful asset and space is available for rent to anyone or any group. The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS<\/span><\/span><\/span>). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the USCS<\/span><\/span><\/span> website – www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> .<\/p>\n

Any person may join USCS<\/span><\/span><\/span> and Scottish Ceilidh Dancers are encouraged to show their support by doing so. If any USCS<\/span><\/span><\/span> member would like to be more involved, then, Darryl Carracher<\/span><\/span><\/span>, the Manager at the Centre, will be pleased to give you further information. At the present time we are in the middle of replacing the roof which is a major expense. It is expected it will take at least another week to complete this large project. We also plan to paint and spruce up the main hall but that will not take place until September.<\/p>\n

Upgrades to the Centre are also being considered so it is particularly appropriate that dancers join USCS<\/span><\/span><\/span>. No final decisions on these upgrades will be made before Members of USCS<\/span><\/span><\/span> are fully informed.<\/p>\n

The heating unit went out on my dryer<\/span>! The gentleman that fixes things around the house for us told us that he wanted to show us something and he went over to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean. (I always clean the lint from the filter after every load clothes.) He told us that he wanted to show us something; he took the filter over to the sink and ran hot water over it. The lint filter is made of a mesh material .. I’m sure you know what your dryer’s lint filter looks like. Well …. the hot water just sat on top of the mesh! It didn’t go through it at all! He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh that’s what burns out the heating unit.You can’t SEE the film, but it’s there. It’s what is in the dryer sheets to make your clothes soft and static free … that nice fragrance too. You know how they can feel waxy when you take them out of the box … well this stuff builds up on your clothes and on your lint screen. This is also what causes dryer units to potentially burn your house down with it!<\/em> He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very longtime (and to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out and wash it with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months. He said that makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long! How about that!?! Learn something new everyday! I certainly didn’t know dryer sheets would do that. So, I thought I’d share! Note: I went to my dryer and tested my screen by running water on it. The water ran through a little bit but mostly collected all the water in the mesh screen. I washed it with warm soapy water and a nylon brush and I had it done in 30 seconds. Then when I rinsed it .. the water ran right thru the screen! There wasn’t any puddling<\/span> at all! That repairman knew what he was talking about!<\/strong><\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is not until Friday, September 26th, 2014 but you can dance every Monday evening, weather permitting, come down to Ceperley<\/span><\/span><\/span> Park in Stanley Park near 2nd Beach.\u00a0 \u00a0THIS MONDAY, June 23 from 7 – 9 p.m<\/span>. and the theme is “Tartan Night.”\u00a0 Wear something tartan especially if you have a kilt<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If it is wet at 5 p.m. the dancing will be cancelled but you can call 604-922-6842 or 604-224-6751 or try www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a> or facebook.com\/RSCDSVancouver<\/span><\/span><\/span> . <\/strong><\/p>\n

Michelle has very kindly made up a Facebook event page for the Ceilidh but you need to “Search for Vancouver Ceilidh on Facebook and “Like” us to receive updates on upcoming Ceilidhs and other events”. Then, if you “Like” the Vancouver Ceilidh FB page (do as described above), you too will receive updates AND be able to share those updates and events on your personal Facebook page to your friends and ask that they “Like” and “Share”, etc.<\/p>\n

Ceilidh Dances are great ways to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries etc. Invite all your friends to come and join you at the Ceilidh. You are welcome to bring your own cake and we’ll even sing for you!!<\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is not until Friday, September 26, 2014 with live music by Calanaish<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/strong> You still have time to spread the word<\/strong> about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. It is great exercise and fun, for all ages, too.<\/p>\n

Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner. Don\u2019t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.<\/p>\n

It really is never too late to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes and well any time is a great time to do it. <\/strong> You will be made very welcome. For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime which is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n

It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n

There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> or www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>. Note that the latter website has the latest updates to temporary changes to times and locations as well there are classes all up and down Vancouver Island, a number of the Gulf Islands, the Cariboo<\/span><\/span><\/span>, Okanagan<\/span><\/span><\/span>, etc. etc<\/span><\/span><\/span>. and there are various groups all over this great Province, Country, World and who knows where else! Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! There is a FREE class from 7 \u2013 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2013 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/p>\n
