The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (<span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">USCS<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the <span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">USCS<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> website &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishculturalcentre.com\">www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> .<\/p>\n<p>Any person may join <span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">USCS<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> and Scottish Ceilidh Dancers are encouraged to show their support by doing so. If any <span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">USCS<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> member would like to be more involved, then, Darryl <span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">Carracher<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>, the Manager at the Centre, will be pleased to give you further information. At the present time we are in the middle of replacing the roof which is a major expense. It is expected it will take at least another week to complete this large project. We also plan to paint and spruce up the main hall but that will not take place until September.<\/p>\n<p>Upgrades to the Centre are also being considered so it is particularly appropriate that dancers join <span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">USCS<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>. No final decisions on these upgrades will be made before Members of <span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">USCS<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> are fully informed.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\"><span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Well where did the week go?\u00a0 Dancing in the Park with Deep Cove on Monday then of course Canada Day on Tuesday.\u00a0\u00a0 That meant I was at work on Wednesday while Thursday I accompanied my youngest as he rode down to the beach and the pool on his bike while I vainly tried to keep up.\u00a0\u00a0 He is pretty good though and waited for me at each stop sign!!\u00a0\u00a0 Watched their swim lessons then it was a quick shower and change plus a piano practise and a snack before tennis.\u00a0\u00a0 Back up the hill for lunch and back down again for swim training.\u00a0\u00a0 Then it is trampoline time while I collapse.\u00a0\u00a0 They have endless energy &#8211; I forgot that Taryn also has a <span class=\"hiddenSpellError\">synchro<\/span> class \u00a0first of all but I have not had to get her there yet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Friday was pretty much a repeat while yesterday, as mentioned, I danced after doing a few chores.\u00a0 Today I was &#8220;volunteered&#8221; No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n<p>It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/swing.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5179\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/swing.gif\" alt=\"swing\" width=\"84\" height=\"84\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! I occasionally hear of an event somewhere in our beautiful Province, on the Island or in the Interior, but don&#8217;t know all the details. This newsletter reaches out to some<strong> 393 <\/strong>subscribers from all over the Province, Country and to many other countries as well, so please send me the details of your event and I will only be too happy to include them.<\/p>\n<p>====================================================<\/p>\n<p><em>A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and inquired of his father as to when they could discuss his use of the car. Father said he&#8217;d make a deal with his son,&#8221;You bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study our Bible a little, and get your hair cut. Then we&#8217;ll talk about the car.&#8221; \u00a0 The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he&#8217;d settle for the offer, and they agreed on it. \u00a0 After about six weeks his father said, &#8220;Son, you&#8217;ve brought your grades up and I&#8217;ve observed that you have been studying your Bible, but I&#8217;m disappointed you haven&#8217;t had your hair cut.&#8221; \u00a0 The boy said, &#8220;You know, Dad, I&#8217;ve been thinking about that, and I&#8217;ve noticed in my studies of the Bible that Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair, Moses had long hair, and there&#8217;s even strong evidence that Jesus had long hair.&#8221; \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> (You&#8217;re going to love the Dad&#8217;s reply!) \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Did you also notice that they all walked everywhere they went?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>When Mahatma Gandhi was studying law at the University College of London, a white professor, whose last name was Peters, disliked him intensely and always displayed prejudice and animosity towards him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Also, because Gandhi never lowered his head when addressing him as he expected, there were always &#8220;arguments&#8221; and confrontations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>One day, Mr. Peters was having lunch at the dining room of the University, and Gandhi came along with his tray and sat next to the professor. The professor said, &#8220;Mr Gandhi, you do not understand. A pig and a bird do not sit together to eat.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gandhi looked at him as a parent would a rude child and calmly replied, &#8220;You do not worry professor. I&#8217;ll fly away,&#8221; and he went and sat at another table.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr. Peters, reddened with rage, decided to take revenge on the next test paper, but Gandhi responded brilliantly to all questions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr. Peters, unhappy and frustrated, asked him the following question. &#8220;Mr Gandhi, if you were walking down the street and found a package, and within was a bag of wisdom and another bag with a lot of money, which one would you take?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Without hesitating, Gandhi responded, &#8220;The one with the money, of course.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr. Peters , smiling sarcastically said, &#8220;I, in your place, would have taken the wisdom, don&#8217;t you think?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gandhi shrugged indifferently and responded, &#8220;Each one takes what he doesn&#8217;t have.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr. Peters, by this time was fit to be tied. So great was his anger that he wrote on Gandhi&#8217;s exam sheet the word &#8220;idiot&#8221; and gave it to Gandhi.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gandhi took the exam sheet and sat down at his desk, trying very hard to remain calm while he contemplated his next move.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A few minutes later, Gandhi got up, went to the professor and said to him in a dignified but sarcastically polite tone, &#8220;Mr. Peters, you signed the sheet, but you did not give me the grade.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>===========================================================<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy yourselves &#8211; come Scottish Country Dancing &#8211; for it is good for your health and you never know you just might &#8230;..!
