\"Thanksgiving<\/a>Ceilidh for Stuart and Cancer\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\"help\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

As mentioned last week the next Ceilidh Dance on<\/span> October 24 is being dedicated to a wonderful person, the late Stuart Somerville,\u00a0and\u00a0it is to be a fund-raiser for the BC\u00a0Cancer Foundation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Now I need lots of help to make this a success and I still have not been flooded with offers\u00a0so I really hope some folk will contact me to volunteer.\u00a0\u00a0 I do not want to increase the admission price as that may inhibit some people from attending so we need to look elsewhere for ideas to raise money.\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u00a0have to applied for a gaming license\u00a0so we will hold a 50\/50 draw.\u00a0\u00a0 That would need 2 teams of 3 people to sell the tickets (1 to collect the money, 1 to cut the tickets off the roll and 1 to rip the tickets apart so the purchasers get their portion etc.\u00a0\u00a0 Then we need a team of 2 people to collect everything, count the money and ensure all tickets have been separated.\u00a0\u00a0 I will bring the tickets, a bucket or two and maybe an apron with pockets for the money.\u00a0\u00a0 Ticket sales should start about 7:45 and the draw about 9 p.m.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I would also like to have a silent auction for which we need\u00a0donations such as some bottles of wine, a gift basket, gift certificates, etc.\u00a0\u00a0 I think the maximum value should be about $200 for each auction item.\u00a0\u00a0 Paul has offered to prepare the bidding sheets.\u00a0\u00a0 Now we need your donations and a team of 2 or 3 volunteers to put everything in place.\u00a0\u00a0 Auction should close about 10 p.m.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Lets make this and event we can be proud of.\u00a0\u00a0 It is a great cause and Stuart was a wonderful person.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Of course if you are from out-of-town or are for some reason unable to attend you could always send a cheque – donations of $25 or more will get a charitable receipt.\u00a0\u00a0 Make cheques payable to BC Cancer Foundation and mail them to:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

After the early morning heavy rain it turned into a nice day yesterday but I got stuck in front of my computer trying to get the financial statements for the Highland Games completed.\u00a0\u00a0 Unfortunately I still need a few more answers so it will have to wait until Tuesday now.\u00a0\u00a0 I did move the deck furniture under cover as well as the outdoor heater, which we never used this year, into the garage (the propane is in the shed!)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I also cleared the deck and path of the first coating of leaves<\/p>\n

The Scottish Cultural Centre<\/span> is a pretty unique and wonderful asset and space is available for rent to anyone or any group. The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the USCS<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> website – www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> .\u00a0\u00a0 The cost is only $10.<\/p>\n

Any person may join USCS<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> and Scottish Country & Ceilidh Dancers are encouraged to show their support by doing so<\/span>. If any USCS<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> member would like to be more involved, then, Darryl Carracher<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>, the Manager at the Centre, will be pleased to give you further information. We have just finished replacing the roof which was a major expense.\u00a0 We are presently in the midst\u00a0of painting and sprucing up the main hall\u00a0and hope that this will be completed in the next few weeks..<\/p>\n

Upgrades to the Centre are also being considered so it is particularly appropriate that dancers join USCS<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>. No final decisions on these upgrades will be made before Members of USCS<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> are fully informed.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Two young\u00a0raccoons were on the deck last night but they seem to have left the lawn intact – maybe Mum hasn’t shown them how to look for grubs or maybe there is enough food around so they don’t need to bother.<\/p>\n

when I went down the path to get the mail the other day I noticed a whole bunch of feathers on the lawn and when I went to investigate some more feathers dropped from the cedar above me.\u00a0\u00a0 They were<\/span> body feathers and were beautiful and bluish gray with\u00a0an eye on each one.\u00a0\u00a0 Then I noticed another lot of feathers at the other side of the “lawn” (it really doesn’t deserve such a fine name!) and there were tail and\/or wing feathers in that group.\u00a0\u00a0 It looked like a Flicker had been caught but not sure if it was one Flicker or 2 and no idea what the hunter is.<\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0Friday, October 24th, 2014.\u00a0\u00a0 I have tried an experiment and registered with Meetup and 20 people have now “joined” and many say they will come to the Ceilidh dance.\u00a0\u00a0 Note, as mentioned above, this Ceilidh will be a fund-raiser for the BC Cancer Foundation.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

My thanks to all those who have sent me e-mails this past year, I must send my thanks to whoever sent me the one about rat poo in the glue on envelopes because I now have to use a wet towel with every envelope that \u00a0needs sealing<\/span>. Also, now I have to scrub the top of every can I open for the same reason.<\/em><\/p>\n

I no longer have any savings because I gave it to a sick girl (Penny Brown<\/span>) who is about to die in the hospital for the 1,387,258th time.
\nI no longer have any money at all, but that will change once I receive the $15,000 that Bill Gates\/Microsoft and AOL are sending me for participating in their special e-mail program.
\nI no longer worry about my soul because I have 363,214 angels including the money ones, looking out for me, and St. Theresa’s novena<\/span><\/span> has granted my every wish.
\nI no longer eat at KFC<\/span><\/span> because their chickens are actually horrible mutant freaks with no eyes or feathers.
\nI no longer use cancer-causing deodorants even though I smell like a water buffalo on a hot day.
\nThanks to you, I have learned that my prayers only get answered if I forward an e-mail to seven of my friends and make a wish within five minutes.
\nBecause of your concern I no longer drink Coca Cola because it can remove toilet stains. I can no longer buy petrol without taking a man along to watch the car so a serial killer won’t crawl in my back seat when I’m filling up.
\nI no longer go to shopping malls because someone will drug me with a perfume sample and rob me.
\n<\/em>I no longer use the ATMs<\/span><\/span> because someone has put a false reader in the thing and will take my personal details and money.
\n<\/em>I no longer answer the phone because someone will ask me to dial a number for which I will get a phone bill with calls to Jamaica, Uganda,Singapore and Uzbekistan.
\n<\/em>I can not read anything without changing the letters to make another word.
\n<\/em>Thanks to you, I can’t use anyone’s toilet but mine because a big brown<\/span> African spider is lurking under the seat to cause me instant death when it bites my bum.
\nAnd thanks to your great advice, I can’t even pick up the \u00a35.00 Ifound dropped in the car park because it was probably placed there by a sex molester waiting underneath my car to grab my leg. <\/em><\/em><\/p>\n

If you don’t send this e-mail to at least 144,000 people in the next 70<\/span> minutes, a large dove with diarrhoea will land on your head at 5:00 pm this<\/span> afternoon and the fleas from 12 camels will infest your back,causing you to grow a hairy hump. I know this will occur because it actually<\/span> happened to a friend of my next-door neighbour’s ex-mother-in-law’s<\/span><\/span> second husband’s cousin’s twice removed beautician<\/span><\/span>. <\/em><\/em><\/p>\n

Then, if you “Like” the Vancouver Ceilidh FB page (do as described above), you too will receive updates AND be able to share those updates and events on your personal Facebook page to your friends and ask that they “Like” and “Share”, etc.<\/p>\n

Ceilidh Dances are great ways to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries etc. Invite all your friends to come and join you at the Ceilidh. You are welcome to bring your own cake and we’ll even sing for you!!<\/p>\n

March was when our son celebrated his 17th birthday, and we got him an iPhone. \u00a0He just loved it. Who wouldn’t?<\/em><\/p>\n

I\u00a0celebrated my birthday in July, and my wife made me\u00a0very happy when she bought me an iPad.
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Our daughter’s birthday was in August so we got her an iPod Touch.<\/em><\/p>\n

My wife celebrated her birthday in September so I got her an iRon. It was around then that the fight started.\u00a0 What my wife failed to recognize is that the iRon can be integrated into the home network with the iWash<\/span><\/span>, iCook<\/span><\/span> and iClean<\/span><\/span>.

\nThis inevitably activates the iNag<\/span><\/span> reminder service.<\/em><\/p>\n

Come Scottish Country Dancing – it is lots of fun. \u00a0Just ask anyone who came along to the Dancing in the Park. We had great audience participation so I hope you will all come along and join one of our great classes or at least come to one of the Ceilidh Dances.<\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0on Friday, October 24, 2014 with live music by Calanaish<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/strong> You still have time to spread the word<\/strong> about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. It is great exercise and fun, for all ages, too.<\/span><\/p>\n

They are all held at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver. \u00a0The price is only – $10 or $8 for students which, for what you get is a super bargain \u2013 everyone is welcome. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner. Don\u2019t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a really good time to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes as you will be starting at the same time as other “beginners.”\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so GIVE IT A GO! For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime (much better and lots more fun than golf!!)\u00a0and is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n

It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n

There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> or www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Note that the latter website has the latest updates to temporary changes to times and locations<\/p>\n

Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! There is a FREE class from 7 \u2013 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2013 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/span><\/p>\n

We need to attract students from Universities and all colleges. Somehow we have to get word out to these students. Please do all you can to help us. Come one, come all to the same place (Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver) and the same time (7 p.m. for the class and 8 – 11 p.m. for the dance) and the same amazing price ($10 or $8 for students.) You should check the website – www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a><\/strong> – from time to time as you can find various pages listing “Ceilidhs and Events;” Classes:” Duncan’s List;” etc. On these pages you can check all the upcoming events, where all the classes are located, times, etc. and some places to find Scottish things or some local trades, etc. I will continue to highlight the more current events in each week’s newsletter but, as stated, the calendar of all events will be available on the website.<\/p>\n
