2014\/15 #22"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/january.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6145\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/january.gif\" alt=\"january\" width=\"150\" height=\"60\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On a sad note I just heard\u00a0the sad news about the passing of Ron MacLeod yesterday. \u00a0Ron <span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 17px; background-color: #ffffff;\">was one of the community founders of the Centre for Scottish Studies. \u00a0In 2000, he received the Chancellor&#8217;s Distinguished Service Award for service to SFU.\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"color: #444444;\">He was a stalwart supporter of the Centre, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.\u00a0<\/span> Ron was also a big supporter of the Highland Games and the Scottish Cultural Centre.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Our thoughts are with his family.<\/p>\n<p>!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"background-color: #cc99ff;\">The Branch Burns Supper was a very enjoyable affair with good food (including haggis); good speeches; great music from the Vancouver Fiddle Orchestra and a nice dance programme &#8211; oh the Dem Team danced well too!!\u00a0\u00a0 Thanks to Gill and her committee for all their hard work &#8211; it paid off as we had a wonderful evening though my feet are tired today!!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Winter-Machir-Beach-Islay.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6167\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Winter-Machir-Beach-Islay.jpg\" alt=\"Winter - Machir Beach, Islay\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Anyone for a swim? &#8211; Machir Beach, Islay<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">I have added an invitation to the Calendar of Events for a Birthday party on May 31.\u00a0\u00a0 The event is FREE to us dancers but an RSVP is required soon.\u00a0\u00a0 Please check the Coming Events tab on the webpage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What a simply beautiful day it was yesterday, warm, dry and some sunshine too.\u00a0 I was out in the garden for a long while and managed to clear my head of all the dances that have been getting mixed up with each other in my head.\u00a0\u00a0 I started off pruning the dead wood and leaves from all the clematis plants we have at the back and it does look better.\u00a0\u00a0 There are new shoots spouting already so I got there just in time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I was going to continue pruning but I saw what a mess there was on the roof of the carport, especially the side that is awkward to get at, so I got out the ladder and the long handled brush and set to.\u00a0\u00a0 Then I got the hose and managed to get both sides a bit more respectable getting a bit damp myself in the process!!\u00a0\u00a0 There is a lot of moss on the roof and I need to find some moss cleaner that I can spray on the roof but be thick enough not to run off before it does its job.\u00a0\u00a0 A bit like the soap in the car wash.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">All this cleaning of debris left the ground covered in branches, needles, leaves &amp; muck so I had to set to and clean all that up and I also attached a few of the ferns in that area cutting off the branches to allow the new shoots room and save me having to try and get the dead ones of later.\u00a0\u00a0 We have a lot of ferns &#8211; They used\u00a0to live in a big brick house, but Grandpa got retarded and they moved\u00a0to<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Florida.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Now they live in a tin box that has wheels, but it\u2019s\u00a0strapped to the ground. They ride around on their bicycles, and wear\u00a0name tags, because they don&#8217;t know who they are anymore.<\/em><\/strong> <em>\u00a0<\/em><strong><em>They\u00a0 go to a building called a wreck center, but they must have got it fixed because it is all okay now, they do exercises there , but they\u00a0 don&#8217;t do them very well. There is a swimming pool too, but they all just jump up and down in it with hats on. At their gate, there is a doll house with a little old man sitting in it. He watches all day so\u00a0nobody can escape.<\/em><\/strong> <em>\u00a0<\/em><strong><em>Sometimes they sneak out, and go cruising in\u00a0their golf carts. Nobody there cooks, they just eat out. And, they eat\u00a0the same thing every night &#8211; early birds. Some of the people can&#8217;t get\u00a0out past the man in the doll house. The ones, who do get out, bring food back to the wrecked center for pot luck.<\/em><\/strong> <em>\u00a0<\/em><strong><em>My Grandma says that Grandpa worked all his life to earn his retardment and, says I should work hard so I can be retarded someday too. When I earn my retardment,\u00a0I want to be the man in the doll house. Then I will let <\/em><\/strong><em>People<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>out,\u00a0so they can visit their grandchildren. <\/strong><\/em>\u00a0xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"background-color: #cc99ff;\">The Scottish Cultural Centre<\/span> is a pretty unique and wonderful asset and space is available for rent to anyone or any group. The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the USCS website &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishculturalcentre.com\">www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> .\u00a0\u00a0 The cost is only $10.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #cc99ff;\">Any person may join USCS and Scottish Country &amp; Ceilidh Dancers are encouraged to show their support by doing so<\/span>. If any USCS member would like to be more involved, then, Darryl Carracher, the Manager at the Centre, will be pleased to give you further information. We have just finished replacing the roof which was a major expense.\u00a0 We have also just finishing painting and sprucing up the main hall\u00a0and hope you all like what we have done. Upgrades to the Centre are also being considered so it is particularly appropriate that dancers join USCS. Then, if you &#8220;Like&#8221; the Vancouver Ceilidh FB page (do as described above), you too will receive updates AND be able to share those updates and events on your personal Facebook page to your friends and ask that they &#8220;Like&#8221; and &#8220;Share&#8221;, etc. Ceilidh Dances are great ways to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries etc. Invite all your friends to come and join you at the Ceilidh. While the square is a primary site for the city&#8217;s large festivals and celebrations, it is also a chaotic crossroad for thousands and thousands of vehicles daily.\u00a0\u00a0 This is organized confusion at its finest. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Burns2.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Burns2.gif\" alt=\"Burns2\" width=\"105\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/9A.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6219\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/9A.jpg\" alt=\"9A\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!!
