brig\" width=\"284\" height=\"391\" \/><\/a>HAPPY ROBERT BURNS DAY<\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #333333; line-height: 17px; background-color: #ffffff;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What a super Burns Supper &#8211; the 21st annual Tam O&#8217;Shanter Dancers one &#8211; last night.\u00a0\u00a0 Now I am a wee bit biased as I am proud to say I am a member of the Tam&#8217;s but from the comments made direct to me and ones I overheard it was one of the best ever.\u00a0 There were 320 in attendance and I think they all enjoyed a great evening of\u00a0good food, friendly conversation,\u00a0amazing entertainment and fun dancing not to mention a wee dram or two.<\/p>\n<p>As is traditional, after a short memorial for Ed Wigmore,\u00a0who danced with the Tams at the 2014 Burns Supper and who passed away last fall,\u00a0the evening started with the piper and the haggis followed by Hugh giving a hearty Address to the Haggis with all joining in on the last line &#8220;Gie her a Haggis.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 Then it was time for dinner provided by Dutchman&#8217;s Caterers with traditional\u00a0neeps, tatties &amp; haggis plus many other dishes from salads to chicken to roast beef.\u00a0\u00a0 There seemed to be plenty food and Rowan&#8217;s haggis was a hit with me!<\/p>\n<p>Then it was on to the show which featured<\/p>\n<p>a mother\/daughter singers with guitar accompaniment\u00a0with some Burns songs.\u00a0\u00a0 Their crystal, clear high notes were a real joy to hear.<\/p>\n<p>5 (or was it 6?)\u00a0children who told the Burns story, gave the toast to the Lassies and response as well as the Immortal Memory in a very novel and enjoyable way.\u00a0 These children were just terrific as they had many lines to memorize.\u00a0\u00a0 They spoke clearly and slowly and were a real credit to their parents and grandparents.<\/p>\n<p>A piper of some renown<\/p>\n<p>And of course the Tam O&#8217;Shanter Dancers<\/p>\n<p>The script was written and the whole show woven together under the leadership and direction of the incredible Maureen Lyon.\u00a0\u00a0 The dance she adapted for the finale, The Stationmaster Reel&#8221;\u00a0deservedly brought the house down.\u00a0\u00a0 Well done one and all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Thanks-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6264\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Thanks-2.png\" alt=\"Thanks 2\" width=\"220\" height=\"212\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the many volunteers who came to set up the decorations, lighting, sound, tables, chairs etc. on Friday and also to help with the bar, tickets, lighting, sound, on Saturday and to those who stayed behind to clear up the hall, put away the tables, chairs and dismantle the scenery, decorations, lighting, etc.\u00a0\u00a0 Without you we would still be at the Star of the Sea!!\u00a0\u00a0 You were an integral part of the event and your help made it possible for the evening to flow so smoothly.<\/p>\n<p>Look out for the 22nd show and when tickets go on sale don&#8217;t wait, snap them up as this year was a sell out again and there is no more room!!!<\/p>\n<p>Lastly my thanks to the Tams for allowing me to be a part of such a thrilling experience.<\/p>\n<p>!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"background-color: #cc99ff;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Winter-River-Earn.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6248\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Winter-River-Earn.jpg\" alt=\"Winter - River Earn\" width=\"412\" height=\"549\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">River Earn<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>Bob, a 70-year-old, extremely wealthy widower, shows up at the Country Club with a breathtakingly beautiful and very sexy 25 year- old blonde who knocks everyone&#8217;s socks off with her youthful sex appeal and charm. She hangs onto Bob&#8217;s arm and listens intently to his every word. His buddies at the club are all aghast. At the very first chance, they corner him and ask, &#8220;Bob, how did you get the trophy girlfriend?&#8221; Bob replies, &#8220;Girlfriend? She&#8217;s my wife!&#8221; They&#8217;re amazed, but continue to ask. &#8220;So, how did you persuade her to marry you?&#8221; &#8220;I lied about my age&#8221;, Bob replies. &#8220;What, did you tell her you were only 50?&#8221; Bob smiles and says, &#8220;No, I told her I was 90.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\"><br \/>\nI have added an invitation to the Calendar of Events for a Birthday party on May 31.\u00a0\u00a0 The event is FREE to us dancers but an RSVP is required soon.\u00a0\u00a0 Please check the Coming Events tab on the webpage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Well it has been a busy week although other than dancing every day here,\u00a0there and everywhere I will have to look at my calendar to see what else kept me occupied.\u00a0\u00a0 Of course the Australian Open tennis started so that keeps us up very late and we did have guests last Sunday for dinner and Margaret had ladies here on Tuesday so I had to help with a little of the house cleaning.\u00a0\u00a0 It is amazing where all the dirt come from &#8211; well I don&#8217;t know where it actually comes from but I can see when I mop and sweep that it has accumulated in a day or two.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I certainly did not get into the garden (today would have been good but my body is very tired!!) and I did not do any drives for Cancer but I did have meeting I needed to attend and some other matters that required my attention and somewhere the time has flown by.\u00a0\u00a0 This coming week looks as if it will be just as busy as there are some 5 demonstrations and two classes to attend plus drives on Monday and Thursday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>The SFU Burns event on Friday seems to have gone well.\u00a0\u00a0 Here is a note from Leith:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Wishing all our friends near and far a Happy Burns Day on January 25! As they stopped at a cheese farm, a young guide led them through the process of cheese making, explaining that goat&#8217;s milk was used. Red meat is awful. Soft drinks corrode your stomach lining. Chinese Food is loaded with MSG. High fat diets can be disastrous, and none of us realizes the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water. But there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and we all have, or will, eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?&#8221; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>After several seconds of quiet, a 75-year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said, &#8220;Wedding Cake.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"background-color: #cc99ff;\">The Scottish Cultural Centre<\/span> is a pretty unique and wonderful asset and space is available for rent to anyone or any group. The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the USCS website &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishculturalcentre.com\">www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> .\u00a0\u00a0 The cost is only $10.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #cc99ff;\">Any person may join USCS and Scottish Country &amp; Ceilidh Dancers are encouraged to show their support by doing so<\/span>. If any USCS member would like to be more involved, then, Darryl Carracher, the Manager at the Centre, will be pleased to give you further information. We have just finished replacing the roof which was a major expense.\u00a0 We have also just finishing painting and sprucing up the main hall\u00a0and hope you all like what we have done. Upgrades to the Centre are also being considered so it is particularly appropriate that dancers join USCS. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so GIVE IT A GO! Go to either <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rscdsvancouver.org\">www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\">www,vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> for a list of class locations and times.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/12.jpg\" alt=\"12\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime (much better and lots more fun than golf!!)\u00a0and is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/snowdrop-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6263\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/snowdrop-1.jpg\" alt=\"snowdrop-1\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/12A.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6271\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/12A.jpg\" alt=\"12A\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">There is a FREE class from 7 \u2013 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2013 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments.
