This is for President Gerry – it is the first stop after crossing the Bridge over the Atlantic onto Seil Island<\/p>\n

I hope almost all of you enjoyed staying home cosy and warm when you could have been helping promote Scottish Country Dancing by marching in the St. Patrick’s day parade.\u00a0\u00a0 Cathrine had gone to great lengths to get us moved near the top and we were #9 and the parade was over before we knew it.\u00a0\u00a0 We had all of 12 dancers plus 2 banner carriers and one driver.\u00a0\u00a0 A TERRIBLE showing for our Branch.\u00a0\u00a0 How disheartening for Cathrine and Francis who had put a lot of effort into decorating the truck etc. and a very poor support of your President and the Branch.\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Oh! I know some of you were involved with the Teacher training and EVERYONE Else has a wonderful excuse but I don’t believe half of them.\u00a0 You should all be very ashamed.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Those who did turn out had a good time marching and dancing\u00a0in DRY weather.\u00a0\u00a0 Thanks for all the effort you put into it.\u00a0\u00a0 It was a pity we were unable to dance afterwards as the sound system did not materialise.\u00a0\u00a0 Evidently, like many of you, they decided to stay home and not risk getting wet.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Highland cattle near Oban<\/p>\n

A cowboy named Bud was overseeing his herd in a remote mountainous pasture in California when suddenly a brand-new BMW advanced out of a dust cloud towards him.<\/strong> The driver, a young man in a Armani suit, Gucci shoes, RayBan sunglasses and YSL tie, leans out the window and asks the cowboy, ‘If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, Will you give me a calf?’ \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

Bud looks at the man, obviously a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers, ‘Sure, Why not?’<\/strong><\/p>\n

The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell notebook computer,connects it to his Cingular RAZR V3 cell phone, and surfs to a NASA page on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite to get an exact fix on his location which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo.<\/strong> The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg , Ger many . . <\/strong> Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot that the image has been processed and the data stored. He then accesses a MS-SQL database through an ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry and, after a few minutes, receives a response. \u00a0 Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-Tech Miniaturized HP LaserJet printer and finally turns to the cowboy and says, ‘You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves.’<\/strong><\/p>\n

‘That’s right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves,’ says Bud.<\/strong> He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on amused as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car. \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Then Bud says to the young man, ‘Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?’<\/strong> The young m an thinks about it for a second and then says, ‘Okay, why not?’ \u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

‘You’re a Congressman for the U.S. Government’, says Bud. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> ‘Wow! That’s correct,’ says the yuppie, ‘but how did you guess that?’ \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 ‘No guessing required.’ answered the cowboy. ‘You showed up here even though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already knew, to a question I never asked. You tried to show me how much smarter than me you are; and you don’t know a thing about cows…this is a herd of sheep…. . . . <\/strong> Now give me back my dog.<\/strong>\u00a0

I have been out all day starting with the Parade and then I joined other members of the Dem Team over in the Capilano Mall on the North Shore where we danced for a very large crowd at a Canadian Iranian Foundation fundraiser.\u00a0 It was a very crowded mall and we received a great ovation for our performance despite the fact we were dancing on marble tiles and in a very confined space.\u00a0\u00a0 Now I am trying to get the newsletter finished before my favourite Sunday evening TV shows – I might not get finished as it is already 8 p.m.!!<\/p>\n

The Scottish Cultural Centre<\/span> is a pretty unique and wonderful asset and space is available for rent to anyone or any group. The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the USCS website – www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> .\u00a0\u00a0 The cost is only $10.<\/p>\n

Any person may join USCS and Scottish Country & Ceilidh Dancers are encouraged to show their support by doing so<\/span>. If any USCS member would like to be more involved, then, Darryl Carracher, the Manager at the Centre, will be pleased to give you further information. We have\u00a0replaced the roof which was a major expense and\u00a0we have also\u00a0finishing painting and sprucing up the main hall\u00a0and hope you all like what we have done. Upgrades to the Centre are also being considered so it is particularly appropriate that dancers join USCS. No final decisions on these upgrades will be made before Members of USCS are fully informed.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0number of proposals regarding the future of the Centre (the building) were presented at the A.G.M. and these are to be discussed by each Member Society\/Association and were discussed at a Special meeting of the United Scottish Societies Auditorium Ltd. last Wednesday, February 25, 2015.\u00a0\u00a0 A motion was made to refer the proposals to the Directors and to get more details on the various options suggested but the motion was defeated in a close vote – 8 for and 9 against.\u00a0\u00a0 The matter will likely be raised at the next meeting of the USCS which is scheduled for Wednesday March 18 in the USCC. <\/span><\/p>\n

You still have time to spread the word<\/strong> about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. They are all held at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver. \u00a0The price is only – $10 or $8 for students which, for what you get is a super bargain \u2013 everyone is welcome. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner. <\/span> Don\u2019t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a really good time to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes as they are starting up again.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so GIVE IT A GO! For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime (much better and lots more fun than golf!!)\u00a0and is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n

\"St<\/a><\/p>\n

It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n

\"St<\/a><\/p>\n

There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> or www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>. Note that the latter website has the latest updates to temporary changes to times and locations<\/p>\n

Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! <\/span><\/p>\n

There is a FREE class from 7 \u2013 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2013 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/span><\/p>\n
