My body and feet rebelled so I did not attend the Glenayre dance last night.\u00a0\u00a0 I have heard reports that it was a very enjoyable dance and as always the food was just \"Awesome\"<\/a>I have always enjoyed Glenayre’s events and I was sorry I did not go but I was signed up and did go to the White Rock workshop this morning and, of course, I was at the Ceilidh on Friday night.\u00a0\u00a0 What with classes every\u00a0night last week I am feeling my age and I take a lot longer to recover.\u00a0\u00a0 My apologies to Jean and all the good folk at Glenayre.\u00a0\u00a0 I shall try to come next year!!<\/span><\/p>\n

A fairly good crowd at the Ceilidh Dance last Friday night with about 65 in attendance.\u00a0\u00a0 As always there were quite a few first timers who all say they will come back with more friends next time.\u00a0\u00a0 The Branch Demonstration gave us an amazing performance so my thanks to them all for coming along.\u00a0\u00a0 They ended up dancing Magic Moments and then split up and got everyone up to dance it.\u00a0\u00a0 It was a fun and enjoyable evening though we need more dancers in order to break even.\u00a0\u00a0 With costs rising it looks like we will have to increase the admission\u00a0next year.<\/p>\n

Mixed weather this past week – yes we did have some nice, pleasant days but we also had some very heavy rain.\u00a0\u00a0 I thought my garden was going to sink as there were puddles everywhere and walking across the lawn was like crossing a bog.\u00a0\u00a0 I was busy all week with a variety of things and only got out in the garden briefly.\u00a0\u00a0 Fortunately my good wife did get some work done!!<\/p>\n

Some of the USCS Directors have arranged to have the City of Vancouver make a proclamation that April 6, 2015 be Tartan Day.\u00a0\u00a0 It is Easter Monday and there is to be a ceremony at City Hall at Noon with some pipe bands and some Highland and Scottish Country dancers.\u00a0\u00a0 Please come along, wear your kilt or\u00a0something tartan and show your pride.\u00a0<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the USCS website – www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> .\u00a0\u00a0 The cost is only $10.<\/p>\n

Any person may join USCS and Scottish Country & Ceilidh Dancers are encouraged to show their support by doing so<\/span>. They are all held at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver. \u00a0The price is only – $10 or $8 for students which, for what you get is a super bargain \u2013 everyone is welcome. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner. <\/span> Don\u2019t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a really good time to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes as they are starting up again.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so GIVE IT A GO! For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime (much better and lots more fun than golf!!)\u00a0and is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n

It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n

There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> or www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>. Note that the latter website has the latest updates to temporary changes to times and locations<\/p>\n

Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! <\/span><\/p>\n

There is a FREE class from 7 \u2013 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2013 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/span><\/p>\n

How to Dance in the Rain<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80’s arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be over an hour before someone<\/em> would to able to see him.<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>I saw him looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another patient, I would evaluate his wound. On exam, it was well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to remove his sutures and redress his wound. While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor’s\u00a0<\/strong>appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry.<\/em><\/p>\n

The gentleman told<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I inquired as to her health.\u00a0 He told me that\u00a0<\/strong>she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer’s Disease.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong>As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late.\u00a0 He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>..<\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

I was surprised, and asked him, ‘And you still go every morning, even though she doesn’t know who you are?’<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He smiled as he patted my hand and said,\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

‘She doesn’t know me, but I still know who she is.’<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em>I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought,<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0 That is the kind of love I want in my life.’ True love is neither physical, nor romantic.<\/em><\/p>\n

True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
