Not so much dancing this past week – Monday was a half class as it was the AGM first but then we did some fun and new dances.\u00a0\u00a0 Tuesday was the final class for the year so we had a party at the end and finished early.\u00a0\u00a0 It was a small but enthusiastic group and we hope they will all be back in September plus the ones who were away.<\/p>\n

Wednesday we went in to the Programme Class at the USCC where Katherine was teaching and she was kind enough to include both Whisky Jack, the Macallan and some other dances from the Fort Langley programme.\u00a0\u00a0 Thursday was the first night for the Highland Games Demonstration Team practice.\u00a0\u00a0 It was fun having Dorothy back to lead us and we worked our way through 2 of the dances though they both have been amended\u00a0already!<\/p>\n

Friday I did not have to dance but I filled in for Gerry who was off on vacation.\u00a0\u00a0 I gave the Address to the Haggis in a flu postponed Burns celebration at the Queen’s Park Care Centre.\u00a0\u00a0 We had Dan on the pipes, 12 or 13 Burnaby ladies who performed 8 dances and 3 members of Corryvrecken who sang some songs and Cathrine played while we all joined in to sing together.<\/p>\n

Saturday I was leading some Ceilidh Dancing at a wedding which was just down the hill and it was a lovely evening so I did not mind having to wait outside on the deck while the speeches were being made.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Then the tables and chairs had to be removed leaving just enough room for the Gay Gordons then 4 sets (2 x 4 couples and 2 x 5 couples) for the Flying Scotsman and Terrace Loggers Jig.\u00a0\u00a0 There were quite a few musicians in attendance so they formed the Annie & Mike’s Ceilidh Band for the long version of the Virginia Reel (6 x 64) followed by Oxo.\u00a0\u00a0 I think I counted 13 instruments from fiddles, to guitar, bodhran, small accordion, flute, and I have probably missed some.\u00a0\u00a0 There were quite a few classically trained musicians in the mix but they all sounded fantastic so it was a real treat for me.<\/p>\n

No dancing yesterday or today, Monday but on retrospect there was more dancing than I thought!!\u00a0\u00a0 The garden’s call for help was heeded yesterday but we had to go to 2 nursery’s and 2 plant sales first – Oh!\u00a0\u00a0that was Saturday – so I did some gardening 3 days in a row although today it was cleaning the gutters and power washing the front deck.\u00a0\u00a0 I am now so stiff and sore that I am sure I will not be able to dance all week!!<\/p>\n

The next regular Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0not until Friday, September 25, 2015 (the last Friday of\u00a0 September) .<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, mainly due to rising costs but also because of some lower attendances, I have been forced to increase the admission price next season to $12 ($10 for students) so I really hope this does not stop people from attending.\u00a0\u00a0 Remember that if you have a group of 8 or more you can all qualify for a discount but you have to contact me beforehand.<\/p>\n

Miraculously, \u00a0<\/em>two shots rang out and the beaver fell over dead.

The Scottish Cultural Centre<\/span> is a pretty unique and wonderful asset and space is available for rent to anyone or any group. The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the USCS website – www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> .\u00a0\u00a0 The cost is only $10.<\/p>\n

Any person may join USCS and Scottish Country & Ceilidh Dancers are encouraged to show their support by doing so<\/span>. You\u00a0have all summer to spread the word<\/strong> about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. September will be a really good time to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes as they will be starting up again.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so GIVE IT A GO! For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime (much better and lots more fun than golf!!)\u00a0and is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n

It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n

There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> or www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>. Note that the latter website has the latest updates to temporary changes to times and locations<\/p>\n

Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! <\/span><\/p>\n

There is a FREE class from 7 \u2013 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2013 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/span><\/p>\n
