Monday was a half class as it was the AGM first but then we did some fun and new dances.\u00a0\u00a0 Tuesday was the final class for the year so we had a party at the end and finished early.\u00a0\u00a0 It was a small but enthusiastic group and we hope they will all be back in September plus the ones who were away.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday we went in to the Programme Class at the USCC where Katherine was teaching and she was kind enough to include both Whisky Jack, the Macallan and some other dances from the Fort Langley programme.\u00a0\u00a0 Thursday was the first night for the Highland Games Demonstration Team practice.\u00a0\u00a0 It was fun having Dorothy back to lead us and we worked our way through 2 of the dances though they both have been amended\u00a0already!<\/p>\n<p>Friday I did not have to dance but I filled in for Gerry who was off on vacation.\u00a0\u00a0 I gave the Address to the Haggis in a flu postponed Burns celebration at the Queen&#8217;s Park Care Centre.\u00a0\u00a0 We had Dan on the pipes, 12 or 13 Burnaby ladies who performed 8 dances and 3 members of Corryvrecken who sang some songs and Cathrine played while we all joined in to sing together.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday I was leading some Ceilidh Dancing at a wedding which was just down the hill and it was a lovely evening so I did not mind having to wait outside on the deck while the speeches were being made.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Then the tables and chairs had to be removed leaving just enough room for the Gay Gordons then 4 sets (2 x 4 couples and 2 x 5 couples) for the Flying Scotsman and Terrace Loggers Jig.\u00a0\u00a0 There were quite a few musicians in attendance so they formed the Annie &amp; Mike&#8217;s Ceilidh Band for the long version of the Virginia Reel (6 x 64) followed by Oxo.\u00a0\u00a0 I think I counted 13 instruments from fiddles, to guitar, bodhran, small accordion, flute, and I have probably missed some.\u00a0\u00a0 There were quite a few classically trained musicians in the mix but they all sounded fantastic so it was a real treat for me.<\/p>\n<p>No dancing yesterday or today, Monday but on retrospect there was more dancing than I thought!!\u00a0\u00a0 The garden&#8217;s call for help was heeded yesterday but we had to go to 2 nursery&#8217;s and 2 plant sales first &#8211; I now have a 20 year-old bride who is <\/em><em> pregnant with my child. So what do you think about that?&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em><\/em><em><em> The doctor considered his question for a minute and then began to tell a <\/em><em> story.<br \/>\n<\/em><em> &#8220;I have an older friend, much like you, who is an avid hunter and never \u00a0<\/em><em>misses a season. <\/em><em>One day when he was setting off hunting, he was in a bit of a hurry and \u00a0<\/em><em>accidentally picked up his walking cane instead of his gun. As he neared a \u00a0<\/em><em>lake he came across a very large male beaver sitting at the water&#8217;s edge. \u00a0<\/em><em>He realized he&#8217;d left his gun at home and so couldn&#8217;t shoot the magnificent <\/em><em> creature but out of habit he raised his cane, aimed it at the animal as if <\/em><em> it were his favorite hunting rifle and went &#8216;bang, bang&#8217;. The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the USCS website &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishculturalcentre.com\">www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> .\u00a0\u00a0 The cost is only $10.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #cc99ff;\">Any person may join USCS and Scottish Country &amp; Ceilidh Dancers are encouraged to show their support by doing so<\/span>. Then, if you &#8220;Like&#8221; the Vancouver Ceilidh FB page (do as described above), you too will receive updates AND be able to share those updates and events on your personal Facebook page to your friends and ask that they &#8220;Like&#8221; and &#8220;Share&#8221;, etc. Ceilidh Dances are great ways to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries etc. Invite all your friends to come and join you at the Ceilidh. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/guitar-turtle.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6956\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/guitar-turtle.gif\" alt=\"guitar turtle\" width=\"273\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/guitar.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6957\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/guitar.gif\" alt=\"guitar\" width=\"100\" height=\"164\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">There is a FREE class from 7 \u2013 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2013 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments.
