When people come up to me and tell me that they love the newsletter it really makes me feel good but then they often go on to say that I lead such a busy life.\u00a0\u00a0 Well it 1s not true as just like the rest of you I slept 7 nights last week, sat down to eat my meals, read my book and the paper, spent a lot of time, like right now,\u00a0sitting in front of my computer, sat in my car while driving hither and thither and generally have a very relaxed and lazy lifestyle.<\/p>\n

Dancing, if the shuffle that I do now can be called such, was limited to just one night last week and I admit that I did spend at least 8 (probably more but I don’t have a time clock to stamp my card) hours in the garden oh and I did spend a few hours trying to clean all the outside windows (not too successfully I am told!)\u00a0\u00a0 Of course there are many chores that are calling for my attention but if I can procrastinate a bit longer then I will only have to do them once.\u00a0\u00a0 Take the hedge for instance (please do).\u00a0\u00a0 If I trim it now I will have to do it again – maybe even twice more but if I can find other things to do and put that particular chore off for a month or two then I will only have to do it once.\u00a0\u00a0 I probably spend an hour or more every day planning such moves!<\/p>\n

And now the French Open has started so I will be watching lots of TV.<\/p>\n

The next regular Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0not until Friday, September 25, 2015 (the last Friday of\u00a0 September) .<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, mainly due to rising costs but also because of some lower attendances, I have been forced to increase the admission price next season to $12 ($10 for students) so I really hope this does not stop people from attending.\u00a0\u00a0 Remember that if you have a group of 8 or more you can all qualify for a discount but you have to contact me beforehand.<\/p>\n

Talking about this – the Highland Games that is – I am informed that very few of you have been in touch with Jean Wagstaff to say you will join\u00a0the Massed Demonstration of Scottish Country Dancing at this year’s Games.\u00a0\u00a0 Tut, tut – get on the e-mail or phone and get all your club members to get busy and get groups together.\u00a0\u00a0 Of course you can just come yourself but it is even more fun with friends.<\/p>\n

The dances will not be difficult so beginner dancers are more than welcome.\u00a0\u00a0 This is a great chance to promote SCD and the other advantage is that you get a discounted ticket for the Games.\u00a0\u00a0 Here is the information from Jean:<\/p>\n

\u00a0The BC Highland Games this year will take place at the Percy Perry stadium in Coquitlam on June 20th https:\/\/www.bchighlandgames.com\/<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You are invited to dance in the mass Scottish Country Dance ‘DANCE SCOTTISH’ performance.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Rehearsals led by Mary Murray\u00a0will be held on the three Wednesdays prior to the Games (June 3rd,10th & 17th) no charge,\u00a07:30pm – 9:00pm at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver. Dances for the performance will consist of very basic steps and formations and therefore\u00a0suitable for dancers of\u00a0all levels.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The third invests the money in the stock market. \u00a0\u00a0She earns several times the $5,000. She gives him back his $5,000 and reinvested the remainder in a joint account. She tells him that she wants to save for their future because she loves him so much.
\nObviously, the man was impressed. <\/em><\/em><\/p>\n

The man thought for a long time about what each woman had done with the money he’d given her. <\/em><\/em><\/p>\n

Then, he married the one with the biggest boobs. <\/em><\/em><\/p>\n

The Scottish Cultural Centre<\/span> is a pretty unique and wonderful asset and space is available for rent to anyone or any group. The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the USCS website – www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> .\u00a0\u00a0 The cost is only $10.<\/p>\n

Any person may join USCS and Scottish Country & Ceilidh Dancers are encouraged to show their support by doing so<\/span>. The next Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0on\u00a0Friday, September 25, 2015 with live music by Calanaish.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You\u00a0have all summer to spread the word<\/strong> about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. They are all held at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver. \u00a0The price is only – $12 or $10 for students which, for what you get is a super bargain \u2013 everyone is welcome. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner. <\/span> Don\u2019t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.<\/span><\/p>\n

September will be a really good time to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes as they will be starting up again.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so GIVE IT A GO! For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime (much better and lots more fun than golf!!)\u00a0and is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n

It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n

There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> or www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>. Note that the latter website has the latest updates to temporary changes to times and locations<\/p>\n

as well there are classes all up and down Vancouver Island, a number of the Gulf Islands, the Cariboo, Okanagan, etc. etc. and there are various groups all over this great Province, Country, World and who knows where else! Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! <\/span><\/p>\n

There is a FREE class from 7 \u2013 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2013 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/span><\/p>\n
