Now what did I do last week?\u00a0\u00a0 My memory recall is most definitely getting worse.\u00a0\u00a0 How many times do I get up from the computer, go out of the room to get something and have to come back in to try to remember what I went out for?\u00a0\u00a0 So far, but maybe I’m fooling myself, I seem to be able to remember most of the dance patterns.\u00a0\u00a0 Maybe my partner and set mates are too polite to correct me!!<\/p>\n

Well where better to start than last night where we were at the Fort Langley 15th Anniversary Gala dance held in the Scottish Cultural Centre.\u00a0\u00a0 The hall was looking great and it was enhanced with trapping from Fort Langley, banners, cedar boughs, and with a very nice touch used Ed Wigmore’s paddle to direct the Grand March.\u00a0\u00a0 Ed had been a stalwart member of the club and had passed away in the last year.<\/p>\n

A nice, relaxed reception got the evening off on a great note and, even though we were the last table to be called(!), the dinner was very nice with a good selection of salads, veggies, turkey, ham and gravy and there was lots of it too.\u00a0\u00a0 It wouldn’t be Fort Langley if we didn’t have strawberries and real cream plus shortbread for dessert.\u00a0\u00a0 I had been asked to help organize the removal of some 11 tables and while it may have seemed to be very haphazard, and looked like a great deal of confusion, we did get it done and no one seemed to mind.\u00a0\u00a0 Did I mention the very nice centrepieces on each table along with the handsome programmes and the little favours with chocolates.<\/p>\n

And then the band played!!!\u00a0\u00a0 And what a great sound they made.\u00a0\u00a0 It was near impossible not to be moving all the time to their beat and the sets of tunes were just fabulous.\u00a0\u00a0 “Torridon” is made up of musicians from Quebec. Ontario, Texas and Scotland\u00a0\u00a0 It was amazing to hear that they had only practised for the first time together that afternoon and only for about 20 minutes.\u00a0\u00a0 It seemed they had been playing together for a long time as they were just excellent.<\/p>\n

Rebecca’s programme (and her excellent MC’ing and briefing) including two new “whisky” dances devised by Dorothy Hargreaves, was just the right mix and most of us were able to relax and really enjoy the dances and the music.\u00a0\u00a0 There was lots of room and I am sure all 131 attendees thoroughly enjoyed themselves.<\/p>\n

Thank you to all the Fort Langley Club members for all the hard work.\u00a0\u00a0 It was a great and memorable evening.<\/p>\n

The next regular Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0not until Friday, September 25, 2015 (the last Friday of\u00a0 September) .<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, mainly due to rising costs but also because of some lower attendances, I have been forced to increase the admission price next season to $12 ($10 for students) so I really hope this does not stop people from attending.\u00a0\u00a0 Remember that if you have a group of 8 or more you can all qualify for a discount but you have to contact me beforehand.<\/p>\n

Talking about this – the Highland Games that is – I am informed that a few more of you have been in touch with Jean Wagstaff to say you will join\u00a0the Massed Demonstration of Scottish Country Dancing at this year’s Games.\u00a0\u00a0 That is a BIT better but we still need more of you to get on the e-mail or phone;\u00a0get all your club members to join in;\u00a0get busy and put groups together and come along to the classes starting THIS Wednesday.\u00a0\u00a0 Of course you can just come yourself but it is even more fun with friends.<\/p>\n

The dances will not be difficult so beginner dancers are more than welcome.\u00a0\u00a0 This is a great chance to promote SCD and the other advantage is that you get a discounted ticket for the Games.\u00a0\u00a0 Here is the information from Jean:<\/p>\n

Rehearsals led by Mary Murray\u00a0will be held on the three Wednesdays prior to the Games (June 3rd,10th & 17th) no charge,\u00a07:30pm – 9:00pm at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver. Dances for the performance will consist of very basic steps and formations and therefore\u00a0suitable for dancers of\u00a0all levels.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The Scottish Cultural Centre<\/span> is a pretty unique and wonderful asset and space is available for rent to anyone or any group. The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the USCS website – www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> .\u00a0\u00a0 The cost is only $10.<\/p>\n

Any person may join USCS and Scottish Country & Ceilidh Dancers are encouraged to show their support by doing so<\/span>. After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver’s license to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home. I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later.
\nThe woman said, ‘Unbutton your shirt’. So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair.
\nShe said, ‘That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me’ and she processed my Social Security application.
\nWhen I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office.

The next Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0on\u00a0Friday, September 25, 2015 with live music by Calanaish.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You\u00a0have all summer to spread the word<\/strong> about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. They are all held at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver. \u00a0The price is only – $12 or $10 for students which, for what you get is a super bargain \u2013 everyone is welcome. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner. <\/span> Don\u2019t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.<\/span><\/p>\n

September will be a really good time to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes as they will be starting up again.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so GIVE IT A GO! For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime (much better and lots more fun than golf!!)\u00a0and is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n

It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n

There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> or www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>. Note that the latter website has the latest updates to temporary changes to times and locations<\/p>\n

as well there are classes all up and down Vancouver Island, a number of the Gulf Islands, the Cariboo, Okanagan, etc. etc. and there are various groups all over this great Province, Country, World and who knows where else! Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! <\/span><\/p>\n

There is a FREE class from 7 \u2013 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2013 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/span><\/p>\n
