{"id":7022,"date":"2015-05-31T21:50:17","date_gmt":"2015-06-01T01:50:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/?page_id=7022"},"modified":"2015-05-31T21:50:17","modified_gmt":"2015-06-01T01:50:17","slug":"ceilidh-newsletter-201415-40","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/?page_id=7022","title":{"rendered":"Ceilidh Newsletter &#8211; 2014\/15 #40"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/may.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6867\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/may.gif\" alt=\"may\" width=\"150\" height=\"60\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Late-spring-Morar-Beach1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Late-spring-Morar-Beach1.jpg\" alt=\"Late spring - Morar Beach\" width=\"412\" height=\"549\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Morar Beach<\/p>\n<p>Now what did I do last week?\u00a0\u00a0 My memory recall is most definitely getting worse.\u00a0\u00a0 How many times do I get up from the computer, go out of the room to get something and have to come back in to try to remember what I went out for?\u00a0\u00a0 So far, but maybe I&#8217;m fooling myself, I seem to be able to remember most of the dance patterns.\u00a0\u00a0 Maybe my partner and set mates are too polite to correct me!!<\/p>\n<p>Well where better to start than last night where we were at the Fort Langley 15th Anniversary Gala dance held in the Scottish Cultural Centre.\u00a0\u00a0 The hall was looking great and it was enhanced with trapping from Fort Langley, banners, cedar boughs, and with a very nice touch used Ed Wigmore&#8217;s paddle to direct the Grand March.\u00a0\u00a0 Ed had been a stalwart member of the club and had passed away in the last year.<\/p>\n<p>A nice, relaxed reception got the evening off on a great note and, even though we were the last table to be called(!), the dinner was very nice with a good selection of salads, veggies, turkey, ham and gravy and there was lots of it too.\u00a0\u00a0 It wouldn&#8217;t be Fort Langley if we didn&#8217;t have strawberries and real cream plus shortbread for dessert.\u00a0\u00a0 I had been asked to help organize the removal of some 11 tables and while it may have seemed to be very haphazard, and looked like a great deal of confusion, we did get it done and no one seemed to mind.\u00a0\u00a0 Did I mention the very nice centrepieces on each table along with the handsome programmes and the little favours with chocolates.<\/p>\n<p>And then the band played!!!\u00a0\u00a0 And what a great sound they made.\u00a0\u00a0 It was near impossible not to be moving all the time to their beat and the sets of tunes were just fabulous.\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;Torridon&#8221; is made up of musicians from Quebec. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver&#8217;s license to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/dragon-fire.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7041\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/dragon-fire.gif\" alt=\"dragon fire\" width=\"257\" height=\"116\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/dragon-flying.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7042\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/dragon-flying.gif\" alt=\"dragon flying\" width=\"320\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!!
