Well we are certainly having summer weather in Beautiful BC but by all accounts the UK is not enjoying very good weather – maybe it is on its way west.<\/p>\n

Another gorgeous week with loads of sunshine – a mite hot but we should never complain.\u00a0\u00a0 The ground is very dry as shown last night on our way home where the grass on the median had caught fire probably started by some careless cigarette tossed out a car window.\u00a0\u00a0 We passed the fire engine on its way and when I went back in later the fire was out but there was a very noticeable black scar .<\/p>\n

If this keeps up then we are in for some serious water restrictions.\u00a0\u00a0 There has already been a run on fans and air conditioners.\u00a0\u00a0 We find it so warm we sleep on top of the bed covers but our just arrived granddaughter from LA felt cold and had to find extra covers!!\u00a0\u00a0 She is here to coach swimming and visit with her friends.\u00a0\u00a0 We did see her for a late breakfast but that might be about it until she heads home in mid August – she has to leave early to practise field hockey for her school.<\/p>\n

Another enjoyable night in Stanley Park and there was wonderful audience participation.\u00a0 So much so that Rebecca missed out some of the more complicated dances and we repeated the easier ones.<\/p>\n

Cathrine puts in many hours promoting SCD at various places and deserves a HUGE THANK YOU.\u00a0 Now you can really show your appreciation for what she does by coming along to join in the Canada Day parade THIS WEDNEDAY, July 1.\u00a0\u00a0 Canada Day Parade \u2013 We are entry #45 in the parade on July 1st!\u00a0 We will gather about 6 pm at the northeast corner of Alberni and Broughton, just behind the entry from the consulate of Pakistan, and just in front of Academie Duello. (sword fighting team?) We can go over the dance steps between 6 and 7. The front of the parade starts at 7. Any questions, contact ccmusic@telus.net<\/a> or phone 604-299-6447. Remember that Dancing in the Park (Ceperley Park in Stanley Park – near the old Fire Engine at 2nd Beach)\u00a0tomorrow evening – it looks as if it will be a lovely evening.\u00a0\u00a0 This event continues every Monday evening from 7 – 9 p.m. until August 17.\u00a0\u00a0 Every week there are many dances for audience participation so this is for everyone.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 A list of the dance programmes can be found on the Branch website – www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a><\/p>\n

What a shame Canada lost to England yesterday but they did us and themselves proud.\u00a0\u00a0 They did their best to come back from a 2 goal deficit and were unlucky in the end.\u00a0\u00a0 The crowd sounded good and loud and really got behind our ladies.\u00a0\u00a0 Of course I missed going to the Game although our demonstration at the Richmond Multi Cultural Festival finished in time but it may well have been too late so it was better that I gave my ticket to Margaret and she enjoyed the experience.\u00a0\u00a0 The Team danced in front of the stage which gave us more room though the surface was not ideal.\u00a0\u00a0 They danced very well and we were warmly received<\/p>\n

I listened to the game on my way into Vancouver (I changed out of my kilt at the Cultural Centre), managed to find a parking spot at Homer & Dunsmuir.\u00a0\u00a0 I walked down to the FIFA Fan Zone where I tried to watch the game on the 2 big screens but there were so may people making so much noise that I could hardly see the action nor hear the commentary.\u00a0 I walked up to the stadium and got there as they were going into the 5 minutes of added time so was able to meet Margaret with no problem.<\/p>\n

We walked back to the car only to find, for some unknown reason, the battery was dead.\u00a0\u00a0 I phoned BCAA and they would be 45 minutes to an hour.\u00a0\u00a0 We were right across from a White Spot so we decided to eat but there was a big queue and it took a long time to get seated.\u00a0\u00a0 We ordered and I felt sure BCAA and my dinner would arrive\u00a0at the same time but they didn’t.\u00a0\u00a0 I had to add some time to the meter but we paid our bill and as we were walking outside BCAA phoned to say they would be there shortly which they were and soon had the car running.\u00a0\u00a0 It seems fine but rather than going to a movie we opted to go home so the car would get a good run and then I returned to YVR to pick my grand daughter up.<\/p>\n

Our Hong Kong family arrived on Tuesday and, as they do every summer, commandeered my car.\u00a0\u00a0 They are spending some time with the other grandparents but when my son arrives in a week or so they will all be here.\u00a0\u00a0 Later my daughter\u00a0and another grandson will come so it will be the usual, fun but busy summer with swimming, synchronized swimming, tennis, etc. at the Crescent Beach Swimming Club along with many of their other activities like foot races every Friday evening, Bullhead derbies, Bingo, dances, sandcastle competitions, etc. etc.\u00a0\u00a0 I shall get fitter walking up and down to the pool and then there is the swim meets, swim galas and the relay races including the three generation one to look forward to as well.\u00a0\u00a0 Every year I keep saying I must learn to swim properly so I give our family a chance but I am too lazy!!<\/p>\n

1. I had a\u00a0New Hampshire\u00a0Congresswoman\u00a0ask for an aisle seat so that her hair wouldn’t get messed up by being near the window. (On an airplane!) <\/em><\/p>\n

2. I got a call from a candidate’s staffer, who wanted to go to Capetown. I started to explain the length of the flight and the passport information, and then she interrupted me with, ”I’m not trying to make you look stupid, but Capetown is in\u00a0Massachusetts\u00a0..” \u00a0Without trying to make her look stupid, I calmly explained, ”Cape Cod is in Massachusetts , Capetown is in Africa .” \u00a0\u00a0Her response – click. <\/em><\/p>\n

3. A senior Vermont Congressman called, furious about a Florida package we did. I asked what was wrong with the vacation in Orlando .. \u00a0He said he was expecting an ocean-view room. I tried to explain that’s not possible, since Orlando is in the middle of the state. \u00a0He replied, “Don’t lie to me, I looked on the map and\u00a0Florida\u00a0is a very thin state!” (OMG)

The next regular Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0not until Friday, September 25, 2015 (the last Friday of\u00a0 September) .<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, mainly due to rising costs but also because of some lower attendances, I have been forced to increase the admission price next season to $12 ($10 for students) so I really hope this does not stop people from attending.\u00a0\u00a0 Remember that if you have a group of 8 or more you can all qualify for a discount but you have to contact me beforehand.<\/p>\n

The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. The next Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0on\u00a0Friday, September 25, 2015 with live music by Calanaish.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You\u00a0have all summer to spread the word<\/strong> about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. They are all held at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver. \u00a0The price is only – $12 or $10 for students which, for what you get is a super bargain \u2013 everyone is welcome. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner. <\/span> Don\u2019t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so GIVE IT A GO! For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime (much better and lots more fun than golf!!)\u00a0and is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n

It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n

There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> or www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>. Note that the latter website has the latest updates to temporary changes to times and locations.<\/p>\n

Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! <\/span><\/p>\n

There is a FREE class from 7 \u2013 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2013 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/span><\/p>\n
