{"id":7377,"date":"2015-09-24T11:50:35","date_gmt":"2015-09-24T15:50:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/?page_id=7377"},"modified":"2015-09-24T11:50:35","modified_gmt":"2015-09-24T15:50:35","slug":"ceilidh-newsletter-201516-5","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/?page_id=7377","title":{"rendered":"Ceilidh Newsletter &#8211; 2015\/16 #5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So far so good &#8211; at least I hope that is the case.\u00a0\u00a0 Sorry if I miss out on some of your announcements &#8211; I am trying to check my e-mails but I am not able to access everything from where I am which, as you will have gathered, is not my home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Well it would be nice to have a home here as we are now in Cala Galdana on the Island of Menorca which is a charming island of just under 100,000.\u00a0\u00a0 It is Spanish now though it has been ruled by Moors, English, French and once more by the Spanish.\u00a0\u00a0 It is much smaller than its big sister Mallorca being\u00a0about 50 km in length.\u00a0\u00a0 The climate is very pleasant, certainly when compared to Scotland!\u00a0\u00a0 We have had a high of 31C and one day of clouds and showers.\u00a0\u00a0 We have travelled the length and breadth of the island by foot, boat, bus and rental car.\u00a0\u00a0 The island is surrounded by cliffs cut through by canyons which end with amazing beaches many of which you have to hike a fair distance.\u00a0\u00a0 The main road runs along the spine of the island and there are roads leading off to various small villages and resorts.\u00a0\u00a0 All very nice and enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Did not get to watch (probably just as well) Canada playing Ireland at rugby but did see the last few minutes of Japan&#8217;s amazing win over South Africa and then Scotland&#8217;s win over Japan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">All good things must come to an end and we will soon be flying back to Scotland and hope the weather in the West Highlands will be fair.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Now do not forget the Ceilidh Dance tomorrow night.\u00a0\u00a0 All the information is in this newsletter so there is no excuse.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Summer-scene-on-Sheltand-Isles.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7345\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Summer-scene-on-Sheltand-Isles.jpg\" alt=\"Summer - scene on Sheltand Isles\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">on the Shetland Isles<\/p>\n<p>========================================================<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: navy; font-family: 'Comic Sans MS';\">She was only a whiskey maker, but he loved her still.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><em><em><em><em><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em><\/em> ==========================================<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Summer-shore-between-Pittenweem-Anstruther.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7346\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Summer-shore-between-Pittenweem-Anstruther.jpg\" alt=\"Summer - shore between Pittenweem &amp; Anstruther\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Seashore between Pittenweem &amp; Anstuther<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>*********************************************************************************<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ccffcc;\"><strong><span style=\"background-color: #ff99cc;\">The next regular Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0on Friday, October\u00a023, 2015 (the second last Friday of\u00a0 October to avoid conflicting with Halloween.)<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Unfortunately, mainly due to rising costs but also because of some lower attendances, I have been forced to increase the admission price\u00a0for this\u00a0season to $12 ($10 for students) so I really hope this does not stop people from attending.\u00a0\u00a0 Remember that if you have a group of 8 or more you can all qualify for a discount but you have to contact me beforehand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flying Truths\u00a0 (including a few repeats)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>I<\/strong>t&#8217;s better to be down here wishing you were up there, than up there wishing you were down here.<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re ever faced with a forced landing at night, turn on the landing lights to see the landing area. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ff99cc;\">Classes will have started up again at various locations throughout the Lower Mainland and beyond but it is never too late to come along and join in the fun.\u00a0\u00a0 Check for location, start date and time at <a style=\"background-color: #ff99cc;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rscdsvancouver.org\">www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed on the website. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 <strong>the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class!<\/strong> You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!!
