2015\/16 #7"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/thanksgiving_text_happy.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7465\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/thanksgiving_text_happy.gif\" alt=\"thanksgiving_text_happy\" width=\"164\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a>TO EVERYONE<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Home again, hope the holiday newsletters worked out not too badly.\u00a0 Our plane was an hour late due to being blocked in at Heathrow by a broken down plane.\u00a0\u00a0 I suppose Busters were busy towing something else!!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It was nearly 6 p.m. before we got home and were greeted by a driveway covered in cedar so even before we unloaded our cases we both worked hard to clean the back driveway.\u00a0\u00a0 Of course it was nearly just as bad the following morning and we have swept\/blown it 3 more times since and still you wouldn&#8217;t know it had been done.\u00a0\u00a0 We are going to leave it today, Sunday, and tackle it again before the family come for dinner tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We had a wonderful holiday ending with our family in Ham where I ran a Fund Raising Ceilidh (they called it a Barn Dance as my son was worried people would not know what a Ceilidh meant) for my granddaughters school.\u00a0\u00a0 We had to hold it outside as the school hall was being pulled down as part of a big school expansion.\u00a0\u00a0 Fortunately the weather cooperated.\u00a0\u00a0 We had fun trying to organize a sound system but managed to put something together that worked quite well.\u00a0\u00a0 Including children from 4 &#8211; 11 there must have been about 200 in attendance.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Luckily not everyone danced but all seemed to have fun.\u00a0\u00a0 They brought in a number of hay bales for seats and had hot dogs, pizza, drinks, etc. for sale.\u00a0\u00a0 In previous years they have hired a band and a caller which was expensive.\u00a0\u00a0 This year he was dirt cheap.\u00a0\u00a0Tickets in prior years were at least <span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">10 pounds while this year they only charged 1 pound!!\u00a0\u00a0 They hoped, as in prior years, to break even and were delighted to have made 750 pounds.\u00a0\u00a0 I guess I can now claim to be an international ceilidh caller!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Fall-achiltibuie.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7468\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Fall-achiltibuie.jpg\" alt=\"Fall - achiltibuie\" width=\"407\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a>Achiltibuie<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A gathering of about 100 met on Friday at the Kerrisdale Community Centre to pay our respects, reminisce and learn more about Ron Arrowsmith who passed away on July 20.\u00a0 Ron led a varied and interesting life and was a Scottish Country Dance teacher for many years &#8211; more than 25 teaching a class at Kerrisdale.\u00a0 It was nice that his granddaughter was able to come from Lancashire to be able to see the warmth and love that so many had for Ron.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">========================================================<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: navy; pilots are always found in the wreckage with their hand around the microphone.<\/li>\n<li>If you push the stick forward, the houses get bigger; if you pull the stick back, they get smaller. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ff99cc;\">Classes will have started up again at various locations throughout the Lower Mainland and beyond but it is never too late to come along and join in the fun.\u00a0\u00a0 Check for location, start date and time at <a style=\"background-color: #ff99cc;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rscdsvancouver.org\">www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed on the website. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 <strong>the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class!<\/strong> You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">There is a FREE class from 7 \u2013 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2013 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Somehow we have to get word out to these students. Please do all you can to help us.
