{"id":7694,"date":"2015-11-15T16:16:21","date_gmt":"2015-11-15T20:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/?page_id=7694"},"modified":"2015-11-15T16:16:21","modified_gmt":"2015-11-15T20:16:21","slug":"ceilidh-newsletter-201516-12","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/?page_id=7694","title":{"rendered":"Ceilidh Newsletter &#8211; 2015\/16 #12"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/november.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7709\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/november.gif\" alt=\"november\" width=\"252\" height=\"144\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A nice, calm (except for the windy, wet days), normal week with a wonderful dance halfway through.\u00a0\u00a0 Weather a bit mixed with one nice, dry day followed by a wet windy one.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Fall-Tillicoultry.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7696\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Fall-Tillicoultry.jpg\" alt=\"Fall - Tillicoultry\" width=\"402\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Dusk coming down into Tillicoultry<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Dancing class on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday evenings, demonstrations on Thursday and Friday afternoons and a free (well dance free) weekend.\u00a0\u00a0 Then there was the Lady Aberdeen Tea Dance on Wednesday and what a great event it was.\u00a0 The Burnaby club were the hosts again this year carrying on the tradition of having a dance on Armistice Day with all proceeds going to Veterans Charities.\u00a0\u00a0 There were at least 180 in attendance and maybe a few more than that so it was a crowded hall but we had room to dance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Hall was tastefully and very nicely decorated, the programme of dances didn&#8217;t give us too many fits, the music chosen was perfect and the food at the Tea break &#8211; well it was just indescribable as there was so much and such a variety too.\u00a0 Many, many thanks to all the members of the Burnaby club\u00a0who obviously had worked hard beforehand and worked even harder on the day of as well as afterwards.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I had a very enjoyable time as did the dozen or so of the members from the West End class some of whom have only been dancing for a short time.\u00a0 We were invited to an after party which was the icing on the cake so to speak and because it was an afternoon dance we got home at a reasonable hour.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">========================================================<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: navy; font-family: 'Comic Sans MS';\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/kids-17.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/kids-17.jpg\" alt=\"kids 17\" width=\"247\" height=\"295\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; background-color: #ffcc99;\">The Burnaby club, who\u00a0hosted the Lady Aberdeen Tea Dance last\u00a0 Wednesday afternoon want to thank all those\u00a0who brought a\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-family: andale mono,monospace;\">donation of a plate of food.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\">~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ffff99;\">Ian Rankin will be in Vancouver on November 16 as a pre-festival event for the CUFFED Vancouver Crime Fiction Festival. This event is free and open to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\">&#8220;Without glorifying\u00a0war, this British\u00a0Broadcasting\u00a0Corporation film\u00a0shows the\u00a0outstanding bravery\u00a0of the British and\u00a0Commonwealth\u00a0regimental pipers\u00a0who led soldiers\u00a0across no-man\u2019s\u00a0land during World\u00a0War One. The pipes have been played in battle for\u00a0hundreds of years, but trench warfare was new\u00a0as was the accompanying ear-shattering artillery\u00a0barrages. Of the 2500 pipers deployed at the front,\u00a0500 died and 600 were wounded. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/umbrella-2.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7710\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/umbrella-2.gif\" alt=\"umbrella 2\" width=\"186\" height=\"144\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: #ff99cc;\">Classes will have started up again at various locations throughout the Lower Mainland and beyond but it is never too late to come along and join in the fun.\u00a0\u00a0 Check for location, start date and time at <a style=\"background-color: #ff99cc;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rscdsvancouver.org\">www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/fall-river-2.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7708\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/fall-river-2.gif\" alt=\"fall river 2\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed on the website. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 <strong>the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class!<\/strong> You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"background-color: #00ff00;\">There is a FREE class from 7 \u2013 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2013 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments.
