2015\/16 #34"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well the Fort Langley Voyageurs Scottish Dance Club outdid itself and that is hard to do.\u00a0 A beautiful day on Sunday after a washout on Saturday (pity the organisers of Eurofest and out Dem Team having to perform in the rain) augured well.\u00a0\u00a0 We thought we were early but the parking lot was full but we were in luck as there was one space left in the adjacent lot.<\/p>\n<p>The hall was busy with about 100 in attendance but it was not to crowded so we could enjoy dancing.\u00a0 It was an interesting, not to challenging,\u00a0programme very well briefed by Rebecca but we have come to expect that of her.\u00a0 She did not disappoint.\u00a0 The band was advertised as a duo of Kathy Fraser-Collins on keyboard and Judi Nicolson on fiddle but it became a trio as Freddy Collins (drums) came with his wife\u00a0and later on a quartet as Mary Ross\u00a0(2nd accordion) joined the band.\u00a0 They\u00a0were terrific and even those sitting upstairs in the balcony were moving to the music.\u00a0 It was wonderful, it was relaxing, it was\u00a0fun, it was marvellous.\u00a0 The atmosphere was warm and friendly and the food at the end &#8230; well what can I say but THANK YOU to all who helped make it such a fabulous tea dance.<\/p>\n<p>The only thing that would have made it better was if I had won the whisky!\u00a0\u00a0 But then I don&#8217;t drink as I am allergic to alcohol.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8587\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Gattonside-the-Melrose-7s.jpg\" alt=\"Gattonside &amp; font-family: Comic Sans MS;\">\u00a0Why do &#8220;overlook&#8221; and &#8220;oversee&#8221; mean opposite things? \u00a0<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\">The newsletters will continue\u00a0being irregular for a while &#8211; at least till my right side recovers from the stroke.\u00a0 But the Ceilidh dances will continue thanks to all the support\u00a0I receive.\u00a0 The next Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0Friday, September 30.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\">~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"background-color: #ffcc99;\">The Highland Games are on June 17 &amp; 18 in the stadium in Coquitlam.\u00a0 Come all for a day of fun and all things Scottish.\u00a0 A day of pipes, highland and country Dancing, whisky tasting, Scottish foods and vendors, caber tossing and the heavy events, a quidditch game and\u00a0 kidditch for the boys and girls plus many other activities for the whole family.\u00a0\u00a0 It\u00a0all starts at 8 a.m. and winds up in\u00a0the beer tent around 6 p.m.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"background-color: #cc99ff;\">Now for the Scottish Country Dancers there is the massed performance at the Games and if you take part you get 50% off the admission price.\u00a0 There are 3 practices starting THIS Wednesday June 1 in the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver from 7:30 to 9;00 p.m.\u00a0 The other nights are June 8 and 15 &#8211; The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the USCS website &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishculturalcentre.com\">www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> . SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed on the website. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 <strong>the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! <\/strong>\u00a0You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! We hope to have lots of new Ceilidh dancers. Remember to bring your smiles and wear flat shoes.<br \/>\n<span style=\"background-color: #ccffcc;\"><strong>Please<\/strong><strong> do your best to assist us in letting as many people know as possible.<\/strong><\/span> Use Face-book, e-mail, telephone or even word of mouth and tell everyone you know what a fun night it is.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We would like to attract more young adults and students from Universities and all the colleges. Somehow we have to get word out to these students etc. Please do all you can to help us.
