{"id":8977,"date":"2016-11-09T12:55:15","date_gmt":"2016-11-09T16:55:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/?page_id=8977"},"modified":"2016-11-09T12:55:15","modified_gmt":"2016-11-09T16:55:15","slug":"ceilidh-newsletter-201617-6","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/?page_id=8977","title":{"rendered":"Ceilidh Newsletter &#8211; 2016\/17 #6"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">November 9, 2017 &#8211; Isle of Skye<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Yes I am on the Isle of Skye.\u00a0 We crossed from Mallaig on the ferry (you have to reverse on!) this morning at 8 am,\u00a0 It had snowed overnight about 1,500\u00a0feet and the mountain tops looked good when we could see them.\u00a0 Typical of Skye it rained on and off all day but every now and then the clouds cleared for 1\/2 an hour or so and the scenery was fabulous.\u00a0 We are being treated to a very fancy (for Skye) hotel for one night then it is back to Arisaig for 3 nights down to\u00a0Kilbarchan for 2 or 3 more, then back home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We have had a wonderful holiday spending a week\u00a0in Slovenia, a few days in Surrey, UK,\u00a02 nights in France where we visited Vimy to see the memorial (1st time through the chunnel)\u00a0and then Scotland.\u00a0 We got around!\u00a0 I meant to send more than one newsletter but my computer is not working so I am using the guest one in the hotel to send this.\u00a0 I hope it gets out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Thanks to Alison &amp; Co for the\u00a0Ceilidh in October which\u00a0I\u00a0hear went well.\u00a0 I will be at the\u00a0next one and I hope to see many of you\u00a0there &#8211; it is the last one for 2017.\u00a0 So come and celebrate St. Andrews Day and come to the Ceilidh dance\u00a0is\u00a0on Friday November 25 &#8211;\u00a0lots of\u00a0time for you to plan on coming and inviting your friends to join you\u00a0for a fun evening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There is lots of dancing but you don&#8217;t need to be scared as we teach you everything.\u00a0 If it is your first time try to come to the class at 7 then when the dance starts at 8 you&#8217;ll be a pro &#8211; well nearly.\u00a0 Alison and I will be there and maybe some others to talk you through the dances and there is food and drink too &#8211; even gluten free.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So remember, Friday, November\u00a025 at 7 pm.\u00a0 We really need you all so call your friends and arrange a group.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8979\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Fall-Glencoe.jpg\" alt=\"fall-glencoe\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Fall-Glencoe.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Fall-Glencoe-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Glencoe<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">=====================================================<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: navy; font-family: 'Comic Sans MS';\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000080; font-family: Comic Sans MS;\">Why do we wash bath towels? The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the USCS website &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishculturalcentre.com\">www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> . SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8997\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/halloween-line-misc.gif\" alt=\"halloween-line-misc\" width=\"548\" height=\"52\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8995\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vancouverceilidh.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ghost-figure.gif\" alt=\"ghost-figure\" width=\"195\" height=\"253\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed on the website. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 <strong>the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! <\/strong>\u00a0You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!!
