What a Ceilidh Dance we had last Friday.\u00a0 If you missed it that was a pity as it was it was lots of fun with new dances mixed in with the old, a visit from the Tiddley Cove Morris Dancers who gave us a demonstration and taught us a dance, over 80 in attendance (fantastic, that ensures another season of Ceilidh Dancing) and we had cake and ate some\u00a0 too!!\u00a0 Many thanks to all who came, to the Tiddley Cove Morris Dancers, to the helpers on the door, to Calanaish whom we could not do without and to Alison who is simply marvelous and who has agreed to continue calling for another year.<\/p>\n

Don’t forget to put the Ceilidh Dances on your\u00a02017 (and now 2018)\u00a0calendars –\u00a0April 28; then another season starting September 29; October 27; November 24 and in the spring of 2018 January 12; February 23;\u00a0March 30 and closing with April 27.\u00a0 They are all on Friday evenings and where\u00a0possible\u00a0the last Friday of each month – the exceptions are December (as we never schedule one) and January.\u00a0\u00a0 Come to the Ceilidh\u00a0\u00a0Friday, April 28 the last one of the season and have lots of fun for next to nothing<\/span>!<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>I want to remind you that registration for Summer School and the Teachers’ Weekend is already available on-line.\u00a0\u00a0 https:\/\/www.tac-rscds.org\/index.php\/tac-summer-school\/summer-school-2017<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>There is a lot of information on the web site – many “pull-down” pages providing you with information about classes, teachers, musicians, special events etc.\u00a0 <\/span>Please take a minute to look at the site and then register.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>There are over 125 people already registered and the site has only been open four weeks.\u00a0 <\/span>We would hate you to miss out.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>If you or any of your dancers are interested in participating in the Dancing Achievement Program could you please let me know – after you’ve told them about this new and interesting opportunity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>So far we have two Vancouver dancers who will participate and in early July we will organize a couple of classes to help them learn these dances. Of course you could also slip a few of these into your regular classes and that would help everyone become familiar with them. The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. \nLost Words from our childhood: Words gone as fast as the buggy whip! Sad really!
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>The other day a not so elderly (70ish) lady said something to her son about driving a
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>jalopy and he looked at her quizzically and said “What the heck is a jalopy?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> Oh, Oh a new phrase! He had never heard of the word jalopy!! She knew she was old but not that old.<\/span><\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span> Well, I hope you are Hunky Dory after you read this and chuckle.<\/span><\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>About a month ago, I illuminated some old expressions that have become obsolete because of the inexorable march of technology. These phrases included “Don’t touch that dial,” “Carbon copy,” “You sound like a broken record” and “Hung out to dry.”<\/span><\/span>
\n\u00a0<\/span>Back in the olden days we had a lot of moxie. We’d put on our best bib and tucker to straighten up and fly right. Heavens to Betsy! Gee whillikers!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> Jumping Jehoshaphat!<\/span><\/span><\/span>
\n<\/span> Holy moley! We were in like Flynn and living the life of Riley, and even a regular guy<\/span><\/span>\u00a0couldn’t<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> accuse us of being a knucklehead, a nincompoop or a pill.<\/span><\/span>
\n Not for all the tea in China !<\/span>
\n\u00a0Back in the olden days, life used to be swell, but when’s the last time anything was swell? Swell has gone the way of beehives, pageboys and the D.A. and of spats, knickers, fedoras, poodle skirts, saddle shoes and pedal pushers.<\/span><\/span>
\n\u00a0Oh, my aching back. Kilroy was here, but he isn’t anymore.<\/span><\/span>
\n\u00a0We wake up from what surely has been just a short nap, and before we can say, well I’ll be a monkey’s uncle! or, this is a fine kettle of fish!, we discover that the words we grew up with, the words that seemed common as rain, have vanished with\u00a0scarcely a notice from our tongues, our pens and now our keyboards.<\/span><\/span>
\n\u00a0 Poof, go the words of our youth, the words we’ve left behind. We blink, and they’re gone. Where have all those phrases gone?<\/span><\/span>
\n\u00a0Long gone: Pshaw, The milkman did it. Hey! It’s your nickel. Don’t forget to pull the chain. Knee high to a grasshopper. Well, Fiddlesticks! Going like sixty. I’ll see you in the funny papers. Don’t take any wooden nickels.<\/span><\/span>
\n\u00a0 It turns out there are more of these lost words and expressions than Carter has liver pills. This can be disturbing stuff ! If only we could dial an Operator for assistance?<\/span><\/span>
\n<\/span>We of a certain age have been blessed to live in changeable times. For a child each new word is like a shiny toy, a toy that has no age. We at the other end of the chronological arc have the advantage of remembering there are words that once did not exist, and there were words that once strutted their hour upon the earthly stage and now are heard no more, except in our collective memory. It’s one of the greatest advantages of aging.
\n<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Unless you live in Oregon or New Jersey , you probably do<\/span><\/span>n\u2019t know what a gas station attendant does. Don\u2019t bother looking for the janitor in a school or a stewardess on an airplane either. They\u2019ve been replaced by maintenance engineers and flight attendants. Stewardesses used to serve meals and drinks on flights, after the No Smoking light was turned off. Oh my gosh, people smoked cigarettes on airplanes??? Secretaries have been replaced by administrative assistants, nurses have become health care providers and mechanics have become automotive technicians.\u00a0 Most people under 30 years of age today would be just as confused by the sight of a clutch in a car as they would be by seeing a typewriter on a desk, not to mention listening to a record player. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a changing world for sure.<\/span><\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is\u00a0Friday, April 28, 2017 – that is the last Friday of this month<\/span>.\u00a0 That will be the seventh one for the season and the fourth one of 2017. \u00a0There is\u00a0lots of time for you all to get yourselves and your friends organized to come along for another fun, filled\u00a0evening. Come and dance, it is lots of fun and really easy. Everything is taught from scratch – you won’s be the only newbie!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
HEAVEN<\/u><\/p>\n

Obama, Hillary and Trump are standing at the throne of heaven. God looks at them and says, “Before granting you a place at my side, I must ask you what you have learned, what you believe in.”<\/p>\n

God asks Obama first: \u201cWhat do you believe?”<\/p>\n

He thinks long and hard, looks God in the eye, and says, “I believe in hard work, and in staying true to family and friends. I believe in giving. I was lucky, but I always tried to do right by my countrymen”.<\/p>\n

God can\u2019t help but see the essential goodness of Obama , and offers him a seat to his left.<\/p>\n

Then God turns to Hillary and says, “What do you believe?”<\/p>\n

Hillary says, “I believe passion, discipline, courage and honor are the fundamentals of life. Like Obama I believe in hard work. I, too, have been lucky, but win or lose, I’ve always tried to be a true patriot and a loyal American.”<\/p>\n

God is greatly moved by Hillary’s high-pitched eloquence, and he offers her a seat to his right.<\/p>\n

Finally, God turns to Trump and says, “And you, Donald, what do you believe?”<\/p>\n

Trump replies,\u00a0 “I believe you’re in my seat.”<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Michelle has very kindly made up a Facebook event page for the Ceilidh<\/span> but you need to “Search for Vancouver Ceilidh on Facebook and “Like” us to receive updates on upcoming Ceilidhs and other events”. Then, if you “Like” the Vancouver Ceilidh FB page (do as described above), you too will receive updates AND be able to share those updates and events on your personal Facebook page to your friends and ask that they “Like” and “Share”, etc. Ceilidh Dances are great ways to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries etc. Invite all your friends to come and join you at the Ceilidh. You are welcome to bring your own cake and we’ll even sing for you!!<\/p>\n

The next Ceilidh Dance is at the end of the month\u00a0\u00a0–\u00a0Friday,\u00a0April 28, 2017 with live music by Calanaish.\u00a0\u00a0 This is the fourth dance of the year\u00a0and we need another huge attendance\u00a0with\u00a0everyone coming along\u00a0for a really fun evening.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You still have time to spread the word<\/strong> about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. It is great exercise and fun, for all ages, too. They are all held at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver. The price is only – $12 or $10 for students which, for what you get is a super bargain \u2013 everyone is welcome. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner. Don\u2019t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.<\/span><\/p>\n

Come to a class\u00a0\u00a0– You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class in the new year. For those who don\u2019t know SCD is a fabulous pastime (much better and lots more fun than golf!!) and is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing.<\/p>\n

It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle).<\/p>\n

In Canada, Mexico, India, Russia, and Israel, bank notes have Braille-like markings on them for the blind.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed on the website. Come along \u2013 check us out \u2013 the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that\u2019s for a 2 hour class! <\/strong>\u00a0You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org<\/a> or www.rscdsvancouver.org<\/a>. Note that the latter website has the latest updates to temporary changes to times and locations.<\/p>\n

Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don\u2019t need a partner; you don\u2019t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! <\/span><\/p>\n

There is a FREE class from 7 \u2013 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 \u2013 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!<\/span><\/p>\n
