Welcome back anyway, I hope you have had as good a summer as I have had.\u00a0 The weather in July and August has been awesome although the lack of rain is showing in the lawns and gardens.\u00a0 We are thankful now for all\u00a0the snow and rain\u00a0up to the end of June but that has not helped the forests which have been ravaged by fires with\u00a0many folk having to be driven from their homes and quite a few having lost everything.\u00a0 We are so fortunate in this little corner of the world.<\/p>\n
We have spent a busy summer with family from Hong Kong staying with us for nearly 2 months.\u00a0 They flew back on Monday at 2 a.m.\u00a0 It was a fun-filled summer as they were active in the Crescent Beach Swimming Club (CBSC) which apart from swimming also has tennis, sailing, triathlon, synchronised swimming and a host of other activities like sandcastle competitions, fishing derbies, bingo, picnics, etc., etc.\u00a0 The grandkids were involved in competitive swimming (BC Summer Swimming Association) so many weekends were spent at Swim meets with one of them achieving a gold medal in her age group at the Provincial level.<\/p>\n
The house feels empty now.\u00a0 It is very quiet and peaceful – but I miss them.\u00a0 Only 10 months till next summer which happens to be the 100th anniversary of CBSC so big celebrations are being planned.\u00a0 We are proud of our little club which does so much and only operates for 2 months of the year.<\/p>\n

Enough of my news and on to more important stuff!\u00a0 It is time to remind you of the Ceilidh dates for this season and in particular the next on\u00a0Friday September 29 with the usual class at 7 and the dance following from 8 – 11 pm.\u00a0 No change in the price this year but that is dependant on great attendance at every dance so mark your calendars now and tell all your friends to do the same.<\/p>\n
The other dates for this season are:-<\/p>\n
The dances are all held at the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver (73rd and Hudson which is between Granville and Oak Streets).\u00a0 They are all held\u00a0on Friday evenings and where\u00a0possible\u00a0the last Friday of each month – the exceptions are December (as we never schedule one) and January.\u00a0 Calanais have been practising and are raring to play for us again and Alison and I are rested and ready so all we need is you!\u00a0 Hope to see you on September 29.<\/p>\n

Scottish Country Dance classes will be starting up again so now would be a good time to check out which class is suitable for you.\u00a0 There are many locations around the Lower Mainland (and beyond) with different levels.\u00a0 Check then out at www.rscdsvancouver.org then try one out you never know you might like it!\u00a0 The first class at most clubs is free and the cost is very low when compared to most other pastimes.<\/p>\n

The couple had married as childhood sweethearts and had moved back to their old neighborhood after they retired. Holding hands, they walked back to their old school. It was not locked, so they entered, and found the old desk they’d shared, where Jerry had carved I love you, Sally. \u00a0 \u00a0On their way back home, a bag of money fell out of an armored car, practically landing at their feet.<\/p>\n Sally quickly picked it up and, not sure what to do with it, they took it home. The Centre does not run itself but is actually run by the United Scottish Cultural Society (USCS). Memberships in this Society are for individuals only and presently cost $10 annually. Membership Application Forms may be obtained either at the Centre or on the USCS website – www.scottishculturalcentre.com<\/a> . The cost is only $10.<\/p>\n Any person may join USCS and Scottish Country & Ceilidh Dancers are encouraged to show their support by doing so. Come and dance, it is lots of fun and really easy. Everything is taught from scratch – you won’t be the only newbie!\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n ==========================================<\/p>\n The Young Monk\u00a0 \u00a0The secret is in the details.<\/p>\n A young monk arrives at the monastery. He is assigned to helping the other monks in copying the old canons and laws of the church, by hand. He notices, however, that all of the monks are copying from copies, not from the original manuscript.<\/p>\n So, the new monk goes to the Old Abbot to question this, pointing out that if someone made even a small error in the first copy, it would never be picked up! In fact, that error would be continued in all of the subsequent copies. The head monk, says, “We have been copying from the copies for centuries, but you make a good point, my son.” He goes down into the dark caves underneath the monastery where the original manuscripts are held as archives, in a locked vault that hasn’t been opened for hundreds of years.<\/p>\n Hours go by and nobody sees the Old Abbot. So, the young monk gets worried and goes down to look for him. He sees him banging his head against the wall and wailing. “We missed the\u00a0 R ! We missed the\u00a0R ! We missed the bloody\u00a0 R!”<\/p>\n His forehead is all bloody and bruised and he is crying uncontrollably. The young monk asks the old Abbot, “What’s wrong, father?”<\/p>\n With a choking voice, the old Abbot replies, \u00a0 “The word was ….<\/p>\n CELEBRATE!”<\/p>\n !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<\/p>\n Michelle has very kindly made up a Facebook event page for the Ceilidh but you need to “Search for Vancouver Ceilidh on Facebook and “Like” us to receive updates on upcoming Ceilidhs and other events”. Then, if you “Like” the Vancouver Ceilidh FB page (do as described above), you too will receive updates AND be able to share those updates and events on your personal Facebook page to your friends and ask that they “Like” and “Share”, etc. Ceilidh Dances are great ways to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries etc. Invite all your friends to come and join you at the Ceilidh.
