Ceilidh Dance newsletter – 2012/13 #36

WHERE IS IT?

Yet another of these pictures of Scotland that I have been sent without any note as to where they are. Well nobody has told me where last week’s picture was and it had been published for 3 weeks!!   I may try it again next year but here is a new one for this week and I just know that all the climbers and ramblers will be able to tell me where exactly this one was taken. – ceilidh@rscdsvancouver.org
You can look back at prior newsletters and see previous mystery pictures etc.by going to our website www.vancouverceilidh.org.

20 Pain Cures You Can Find in Your Kitchen

Erase earaches with garlic
Painful ear infections drive millions of Americans to doctors’ offices every year. To cure one fast, just place two drops of warm garlic oil into your aching ear twice daily for five days. This simple treatment can clear up ear infections faster than prescription meds, say experts at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Scientists say garlic’s active ingredients (germanium, selenium, and sulfur compounds) are naturally toxic to dozens of different pain-causing bacteria. To whip up your own garlic oil gently simmer three cloves of crushed garlic in a half a cup of extra virgin olive oil for two minutes, strain, then refrigerate for up to two weeks, suggests Teresa Graedon, Ph.D., co-author of the book, Best Choices From The People’s Pharmacy. For an optimal experience, warm this mix slightly before using so the liquid will feel soothing in your ear canal.

Auld Country Tours who are a big supporter of our Ceilidh Dances are offering a special promotion:
“We still have space on our Scotland tours that are departing in July of 2013. Any members or participants of the RSCDS can enter the promo code “RSCDS” and I will give them a $500 discount on the tour price when they book. This is good for us as we look to fill our empty spaces on the tours, but this is a very good price for anyone wanting to go too!”

The next Ceilidh Dance is not until Friday, September 27.   Same time, same place, same price, same amount of fun and entertainment.   Now it is up to you all to help by planning on coming along on September 27 and bringing loads of friends, family, acquaintances, etc. so we can end the season on a high note. Please do your best to spread the word.   There is of course the annual Ceilidh Dance in the Park which is part of the weekly dances held in the summer on Monday nights from 7 – 9 p.m. (weather permitting of course) in Ceperley Park which is near 2nd Beach in Stanley Park.   These dances start on June 10 and continue each Monday (except July 1) until August 12 and there are always dances for audience participation.   Come along, bring the family for a night out in the Park and join in the dancing.   The Ceilidh night is August 5 but it is fun every week.

Kilbarchan – I’ll be there in June!

Registration for Alasdair Fraser’s Fiddle Camps in California, Scotland and Spain are now open and filling or already full. Try news@alasdairfraser.com for info.

The  exam days for some local budding Scottish Country Dance teachers are over much to their relief.   The seven young ladies who took their exams all did very well although they will not get the results for nearly a month.   Well done ladies – it is always far more stressful than it should be but part of that is self inflicted!   Thanks to Mary Murray, Rosemary Coupe, Jean Wagstaff for all their work and to the many dancers who came along in the past few months to act as a class so the teacher candidates could practise teaching.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hi fellow dancers! Come one come all to the Canada Day Parade at 7 pm on July 1st. Last year we were hugely outnumbered by 50+ Japanese dancers in costume, and 60+ Philippinos, some half naked, dancing to music from enormous amps! We need a BIG and loud Scottish presence! Please contact Cathrine at ccmusic@telus.net or 604-299-6447 to let me know you’re interested. Then I can keep you informed of timing, meeting place etc. and have an idea how many will come. It is truly a really fun experience!

The Parade will take the place of Dancing in the Park this year so you have no excuse.   Come and join us in the Parade and let us make a great showing and be proud of our heritage, pastime.   Bring the family, join in the fun.

Also needed: a loan of a flat-deck truck (and driver), or a pickup truck (to carry bigger sound equipment) . Anyone out there who can help us out? Contact Cathrine (as above)

June 22nd is the Highland Games in Coquitlam and the RSCDS will have a tent with a TV, pamphlets etc. We need volunteers to spend one hour each at the tent from 12-5. Can you help? Please contact Cathrine at ccmusic@telus.net or 604-299-6447. Fine weather is 95% guaranteed!!!

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

I am retired!   Silly me – I thought that would mean a nice quiet life and I would have lots of time to plan various things that I would like to do.  It has not, at least so far and it is now over 2 years, turned out that way.  Maybe I do things slower but it seems I am busier than ever.  It is tax time and there are still a few older clients who like to at least see me at this time of year and that means appearing in the office and looking as if I know what I am doing still.   I try and set up these “appointments” to suit my schedule but that never happens.

It may sound as if I am complaining.   That is not really the case although I would like time to slow down a tad.  I need the Super Slow Downer that some teachers are using on their computers to slow down the dance music to slow down the pace of my days (and nights as they are often too short.)   I do enjoy my life, my family, my friends and the many people I meet as well as the various pastimes including dancing.

Case in point – this letter is late (again).   Well we had a lot of work done on some of our large cedar trees on Thursday and Friday.   They thinned, pruned, etc. to try and give us a little more light and sunshine into our front garden and to raise the branches at the back so they were clear of the house and cars.   They did a great job and cleared up afterwards as well but some of the branches had fallen on the “lawn” and made some dents. holes etc.   I was at the Candidates exam classes on Saturday so after church yesterday I spent the afternoon filling the holes and spreading topsoil over the “lawn.”

I started work on this letter but then family came for dinner and of course I had to stop and socialize, help with dinner, etc.   By the time they left it was nearly 9 and TV time with Mr. Selfridge, the Bletchly Circle and Monarch of the Glen which made it after 12 before we got to bed and just time to read a chapter or so.   So now I am trying to get the newsletter finished, take the empties back to the Bottle Depot so I can finalize the statement for the Ceilidh Dances and hand over the money to the Branch, get my son’s tax return done (he finally gave me the information!).   It was a wild windy night and morning and I have already been out to pick up loads of twigs and added them to the recycling before they came to pick it up.

While the dance “class” season is drawing to a close there are still some places where classes are continuing (the West End for one although we are concentrating on the dances for the Fort Langley Tea Dance) and some others where there are special classes so check all these out.   There are also still at least 2 more dances to come including White Rock and Fort Langley and then there is the Youth Weekend West which this year is being hosted by a group in Vancouver Washington on the weekend of May 3 – 5.    Check it out at www.youthweekendwest.com

As mentioned I will have to miss out a few weeks of newsletters soon so don’t be worried if you don’t get your usual e-mail on a Monday morning.   There should be one more before the break then they will resume again in June.

These glorious insults are from an era before the English language got boiled down to 4-letter words.

I was so depressed last night thinking about the economy, wars, jobs, my savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc., I called the Suicide Hotline. I got a call centre in Pakistan, and when I told them I was suicidal, they got all excited, and asked if I could drive a truck.

The next Ceilidh Dance is not until Friday, September 27, 2013 with live music by Calanaish. You have lots of time to spread the word about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. It is great exercise and fun, for all ages, too.   However there will be Dancing in the Park starting on Monday, June 10 where there are always dances for audience participation.   The dances are held every Monday evening (weather permitting and with the exception of July 1) in Ceperley Park which is near 2nd Beach in Stanley Park.   Bring the family it is lots of fun.   Check the calendar of events for who is hosting.

Wet weather call (604-922-6842) will be at 5:00pm   (If Caruths are away, wet weather call will be done in conjunction with Gill Beattie  – 604-224-6751)

Here is a link where you can watch a short video of a Ceilidh Dance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MvUwZnY9Ms

The format for all of the regular monthly Ceilidh Dances will be the same with the class from 7 — 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 — 11 p.m. and all dances will be walked and talked through. The price is only – $10 or $8 for students which, for what you get is a super bargain — everyone is welcome. No partner is required and you should wear FLAT, comfy shoes and loose clothing. Children are also welcome but should be prepared to dance with other people as some of the dances require a change of partner. Don’t forget to bring a few extra $$$$ to help defray the cost of the refreshments which are otherwise free.

It really is never too late to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes and well any time is a great time to do it. You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so

GIVE IT A GO!

Go to either www.rscdsvancouver.org or www,vancouverceilidh.org for a list of class locations and times.

For those who don’t know SCD is a fabulous pastime which is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing. It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to get the basics learnt then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there also are Branches in Victoria and Seattle). There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along — check us out — the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that’s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!!

Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org or www.rscdsvancouver.org. Note that the latter website has the latest updates to temporary changes to times and locations

as well there are classes all up and down Vancouver Island, a number of the Gulf Islands, the Cariboo, Okanagan, etc. etc. and there are various groups all over this great Province, Country, World and who knows where else! Check the Branch website for all these details – www.rscdsvancouver.org

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next regular monthly Ceilidh Dance will not be held until Friday, September 27, 2013 in the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, (73rd & Hudson which is between Oak & Granville), Vancouver, We need everyone to help us get as many new comers (as well as former Ceilidh Dancers) as possible to come and join us. The Ceilidh Dances are a great way to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, etc. Invite all your friends along. Contact me if you will have a group of 12 or more and we can give them a discount!!! This is the last regular Ceilidh Dance of the 2012/13 season and it would be great if we could end with a really big crowd.
We Really NEED YOUR HELP to advertise the Ceilidh Dances!!!! It only costs $10 ($8 for students) – it is worth so much more in fun, exercise and camaraderie. Use any access to free adverts etc. You can also use things like the Youtube link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bh2HV3OPBgw or the Face-book page https://www.facebook.com/p.php?i=116203315&k=Z5C5Y4TZPT6G6BD1PKZZTWQQQ6BAW26L34AV&oid=164741310207760
Suggestions to improve our advertising are always welcome. Don’t forget to tell them about the website www.vancouverceilidh.org and get them to “subscribe” to the newsletter.
Thanks to good attendances the finances for the 2012/13 season will still allow the cost to be the amazingly low price of $10 or $8 for students and we provide refreshments although we do ask for your donations towards their cost. We always need your support both by coming along and by helping us to advertise these dances by whatever means you use to communicate with your friends be it e-mail, Face-Book, Twitter, Text or even telephone! Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don’t need a partner; you don’t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening on exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn!
There is a FREE class from 7 — 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 — 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!
The schedule for the 2012/13 season shapes up as follows:
All on Fridays of course —
2013
September 27
October 25
November 30
Come along and get some great exercise while also having lots of fun. We are still working on improving the strength of the smile muscles as well as the bows and curtsies! Please do your best to assist us in letting as many people know as possible. Use Face-book, e-mail, telephone or even word of mouth and tell everyone you know what a fun night it is. We need to attract students from UBC, SFU and all the other colleges and universities. Somehow we have to get word out to these students. Please do all you can to help us. Come one, come all to the same place (Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver) and the same time (7 p.m. for the class and 8 – 11 p.m. for the dance) and the same amazing price ($10 or $8 for students.)
You should check the website – www.vancouverceilidh.org – from time to time as you can find various pages listing “Ceilidhs and Events;” Classes:” Duncan’s List;” etc. On these pages you can check all the upcoming events, where all the classes are located, times, etc. and some places to find Scottish things or some local trades, etc. I will continue to highlight the more current events in each week’s newsletter but, as stated, the calendar of all events will be available on the website. You should also have a look at the Vancouver Branch website from time to time – www.rscdsvancouver.org – as there is always useful information on it and it is a very good looking site.
If you have any questions regarding the Ceilidh Dances send them to me at ceilidh@rscdsvancouver.org
Please check the website – www.rscdsvancouver.org for updates, pictures and news.
Castle Fraser, Aberdeenshire
In My Hand I Hold A Ball,
White And Dimpled, And Rather Small.
Oh How Bland It Does Appear,
This Harmless Looking Little Sphere.
By Its Size I Could Not Guess,
Of The Awesome Strength It Does Possess.
But Since I Fell Beneath Its Spell,
I’ve Wandered Through The Fires Of Hell.
My Life Has Not Been Quite The Same,
Since I Chose To Play This Stupid Game.
It Rules My Mind For Hours On End,
A Fortune It Has Made Me Spend.
It Has Made Me Curse And Made Me Cry,
And Hate Myself And Want To Die.
It Promises Me A Thing Called Par,
If I Hit It Straight And Far.
To Master Such A Tiny Ball,
Should Not Be Very Hard At All.
But My Desires The Ball Refuses,
And Does Exactly As It Chooses.
It Hooks And Slices, Dribbles And Dies,
And Disappears Before My Eyes.
Often It Will Have A Whim,
To Hit A Tree Or Take A Swim.
With Miles Of Grass On Which To Land,
It Finds A Tiny Patch Of Sand.
Then Has Me Offering Up My Soul,
If Only It Would Find The Hole.
It’s Made Me Whimper Like A Pup,
And Swear That I Will Give It Up.
And Take To Drink To Ease My Sorrow,
But The Ball Knows … I’ll Be Back Tomorrow.
Stand proud you noble swingers of club and losers of balls
A recent study found the average golfer walks about 900 miles a year.
Another study found golfers drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year.
That means, on average, golfers get about 41 miles to the gallon.
Kind of makes you proud. Almost feels like a hybrid.
