Thank goodness it was a lot warmer yesterday and the rain stayed off (just) as the Demonstration Team danced their final performance of 2013 outside at the Dundarave Festival of Lights. The large tent enclosed some bleachers, the sound equipment, quite a few chairs and tables and left enough room for dancing. It was hard as the surface was brick pavers and there were 2 drains to negotiate as well. The Team danced three medleys which were well received then we got the audience up – we had 3 x 5 couple sets for the Virginia Reel, Gay Gordons and Riverside Jig all of which were danced to Christmas music played by Jim Lindsay (unfortunately not live but on a CD) and were enjoyed by all. We have already been asked back for the 2014 event.

(a perfect example of Government mismanagement.
Outside England’s Bristol Zoo there is a parking lot for 150 cars and 8 buses. For 25 years, it’s parking fees were managed by a very pleasant attendant. The fees were for cars £1.40 and for buses about £7.00.
Then, one day, after 25 years of never having missed a day off work, he just didn’t show up; so the Zoo Management called the City Council and asked them to send them another parking agent. The Council did some research and replied that the parking lot was the Zoo’s own responsibility. The Zoo advised Council that the attendant was a City employee. The City Council replied that the lot attendant had never been on the City payroll.
Meanwhile, sitting in his villa somewhere on the coast of Spain or France or Italy …. is a man who’d apparently had a ticket machine installed completely on his own, and then, had simply begun to show up every day, collect and keep the parking fees, estimated at £560 per day — for 25 years.
Assuming 7 days a week, this amounts to just over 7 million pounds …. and no one even knows his name.

Many class parties etc. and I heard they were all super and the selection of food just amazing. I did attend two and they were just what I said and the fun and camaraderie was great as well. What a fantastic recreation Scottish Country Dancing truly is and what fun, talented and interesting people we are!!
The only thing left in 2013 (well I do have one more class to attend tomorrow night) is the Betwixt and Between dance on Saturday, December 28 (see information below.) All members of the Vancouver Branch are admitted free of charge thanks to the generosity of a former member, Mary Wattum. For many years Mary always paid for the band for this dance and she wanted to make sure this would continue more or less forever. We are very grateful to Mary and continue this dance in her memory.

A TRAM ran along Edinburgh’s famous Princes Street for the first time in more than half a century last week. The 45m long vehicle successfully completed a test run from Haymarket along Princes Street to York Place in the early hours of the morning. It travelled at walking pace while it was checked by engineers and contractors.
After six years of construction, the trams are due to begin transporting passengers by May. The project has been hit by problems including a long-running dispute between the council and its contractor. Work restarted last year on a more expensive but much shorter line. It was originally intended that trams would run from Edinburgh
Airport to Newhaven in the north for £545 million, but the route will now terminate in York Place in the city centre and cost £776 million.

The Highland Games Committee still needs volunteers for next year. They need to fill these positions:
Children’s Events Co-ordinator – organizing the line-up of events which is pretty easy to do, and day of just making sure everything runs smoothly
Programs – this job takes more work in the last couple of months prior to the games, making sure all copy is submitted, having it put into a program and submitted to a printer. Sponsorship/Advertising and promotion – Cher is going to do the social media aspect, Mary Jane may be around to help out again for sponsorship and advertising, but we need extra help. Someone to develop an advertising plan, to find new advertisers and sponsorships, and to be responsible for writing requests for grants and sponsorships from a list that the City of Coquitlam has provided.

I received an e-mail last Tuesday asking me to add an event to the dance calendar. It was for a Ladies Step Dance mini workshop on February 8, 2014. Well I was informed on Saturday afternoon that this workshop is already sold out and a waiting list has been started. I guess you have to be in the know. maybe if the waiting list gets too long they will put on a second mini workshop.

It was Christmas in our home yesterday as our branch of the family that live locally are going south for the holidays so even though only two could come it was a busy day with lots of preparations. I must admit I did not do my share – Margaret did much more including the cooking and cleaning. I did clean the driveway and the front path, sweeping up all the detritus blown down in the past week or so and a few other things. I did not watch TV – we had music on though, light classical which I should put back on to help me think and concentrate while I get this newsletter put together.

Well I have now purged the subscription list of those who have not opened a newsletter in the past month or two. I sent them all an e-mail asking them to respond if they still wanted to remain on the list with a deadline for replies by yesterday and then I followed that up with another e-mail to those who still had not replied. Originally there were 76 on this list but in the end I had to delete 52 names and addresses.
Now subscriptions are back under the 400 mark. This newsletter will go out to 372 people in many cities, provinces & countries. Now my goal is still to get to 500!! I wonder how many cards we will all be sending next Christmas if the postage increases as much as they have announced. I do like the e-mail cards and send them around but I do like the personal touch, especially to people we don’t see very often or if at all. We have some elderly cousins in Scotland that we hear from at this time and it is nice to get the news and know all is well. Many of these older folk don’t have e-mail. I wonder if some other form or company will start-up to replace the Post Offices?

You have time to spread the word about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. It is great exercise and fun, for all ages, too. It really is never too late to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes and well any time is a great time to do it. You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so GIVE IT A GO! For those who don’t know SCD is a fabulous pastime which is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing. It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle). There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below. Come along — check us out — the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that’s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org or www.rscdsvancouver.org. Note that the latter website has the latest updates to temporary changes to times and locations as well there are classes all up and down Vancouver Island, a number of the Gulf Islands, the Cariboo, Okanagan, etc. etc. and there are various groups all over this great Province, Country, World and who knows where else! Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don’t need a partner; you don’t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! There is a FREE class from 7 — 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 — 11 p.m. with music by Calanais. Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!

You should check the website – www.vancouverceilidh.org – from time to time as you can find various pages listing “Ceilidhs and Events;” Classes:” Duncan’s List;” etc. On these pages you can check all the upcoming events, where all the classes are located, times, etc. and some places to find Scottish things or some local trades, etc. I will continue to highlight the more current events in each week’s newsletter but, as stated, the calendar of all events will be available on the website. You should also have a look at the Vancouver Branch website from time to time – www.rscdsvancouver.org – as there is always useful information on it and it is a very good-looking site. If you have any questions regarding the Ceilidh Dances send them to me at ceilidh@rscdsvancouver.org Please check the website – www.rscdsvancouver.org for updates, pictures and news. Dance — it is good for your health.
Keep sending jokes, pictures and info you wish to have included. Don’t forget to look at our web pages at www.vancouverceilidh.org If you know of anyone who would like to be on the mailing list please send them the web address – www.vancouverceilidh.org and ask them to subscribe.
If anyone has good pictures from the Ceilidh Dances please send them to me so I can put them on the web page.
If you have any announcements please send them to me preferably in Word; Times New Roman 12pt format with a layout similar to the one used in this newsletter. I occasionally hear of an event somewhere in our beautiful Province, on the Island or in the Interior, but don’t know all the details. This newsletter reaches out to some 372 subscribers (at long last we are over the 400 mark!) from all over the Province, Country and to many other countries as well, so please send me the details of your event and I will only be too happy to include them.
These fit so well they should be in a dictionary.
