This is the 2nd newsletter for 22/23 but please check the classes page and the events page both of which have been updated – hopefully correctly!  I hope you are enjoying this continued good weather but no doubt the rain will be back with us all too soon.

Scottish Country dance classes are starting up again so check which classes fit your schedule and come along – many first nights are free.

We had a great and enthusiastic attendance at the introductory class on August 29 in the West End Community Centre.  There is a plan to re-start the West End class in the WECC and it will be announced on this (www.vancouverceilidh.org) and the RSCDS (rscdsvancouver.org) websites as soon as we have the details worked out.

Do not forget the Ceilidh Dance on Friday September 30 in the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver.  There is a free class at 7 pm then the dance follows from 8 – 10:30 pm with live music by Calanais.  All easy dances that are taught and called and everyone has lots of fun and great exercise.  Tell your friends and make it an outing – it only costs $15 ($10 for students) and there are refreshments (including cider & beer) for a donation.  Mark your calendars now and make plans to join the fun.

Here is some cheery upbeat Scottish Dance music to enjoy.

In order to keep the Ceilidh Dances running it takes a number of volunteers to do various jobs such as: –
  • getting the liquor licence
  • re-stocking the supply of drinks and refreshments and getting them to the hall
  • Filling the water jugs before and during the dance
  • Collecting the entrance fees, keeping track of the number of dancers, reconciling the funds collected, adding the donations, paying the expenses
  • Calculating the cost of the drinks used
  • Etc.
  • Etc.
These duties are not necessarily for one person.  Is there anyone who would like to volunteer to help at the Ceilidh dances?   If so please send me an email – duncanmackenzie@telus.net   There will be a meeting of all interested people at the Ceilidh dance on September 30 at 7 p.m.

The Father’s wishes….

A man spoke to each of his 3 sons when he sent them to college. “I feel it’s my duty to provide you with the best possible education, and you do not owe me anything for
that. However, I want you to appreciate it.   As a gesture of appreciation, please each put $1,000 into my coffin when I die.”

And so, it happened His sons became a doctor, a financial planner and a lawyer, each successful financially. When their father died and they saw him in the coffin, they remembered his wish.

First, the doctor stacked 10 crisp $100 bills onto the chest of the deceased. Next, the financial planner placed $1,000 there in 20 crisp $50 bills.

Finally, it was the heartbroken lawyer’s turn.  He slowly reached into his pocket, removed his checkbook, wrote a check for $3,000, put it into his father’s coffin, and took the $2,000 cash.

The lawyer is now in Parliament, possibly in your riding….
