The traditional Lady Aberdeen Tea Dance will be held on Remembrance Day, Monday, November 11, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. in the Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver – admission $10; raffle $2/ 3 f0r $5/ arms length for $10. All proceeds from the event to be donated to BC Cancer Foundation and the BC Poppy Fund – please give generously. A plate of food for the table would be much appreciated by this year’s hosts – the Demonstration Team.
The St. Andrew’s Ball has been held in Vancouver for many years. It is not organized by the Vancouver Branch RSCDS but by the Saltire Society. This year the committee is a new and younger group who are enthusiastically working to provide a great evening of entertainment and fun. Of course there will be some dancing but the dances are more the Ceilidh style of dances and the dance programme does not vary much from one year to the next. There are classes for the dances and these are listed on the events list below and under “Events” on the webpage www.vancouverceilidh.org
This year the ball is being held in the Hellenic Community Centre, 4500 Arbutus Street, Vancouver from 6 — 11 p.m. with the Vancouver Fiddle Orchestra. Tickets $99 (30 & under $75) — info at standrewsball@shaw.ca It is unfortunate that the Ball conflicts with Delta’s Dance but this could not be avoided.

Local news — New Dance Competition for Book 49 Have you written a dance? Do you fancy trying your hand at writing a dance? The Vancouver Branch has been invited to submit one (1) dance into the world-wide competition for dances to be published by the RSCDS in Book 49.
If you wish to submit a dance into the competition it must be emailed to book49@rscdsvancouver.org not later than December 10, 2013. To enter the competition you must be a member of the Vancouver Branch. A Vancouver Branch jury will review the submissions and submit the winning dance to headquarters in Scotland. Submissions must never previously have been published in electronic or paper form or submitted for Books 47/48. They should follow RSCDS terminology as closely as possible. Devisors may make only one submission.

The Branch Demonstration Team will be dancing at the Christmas Market on the QE Theatre Plaza on December 7. Normally admission to the market is $6 but we have been able to get free vouchers for that day only. At our recent meeting of the Highland Games Committee we identified some areas that we need volunteers for next year. Overall, the Games went very smoothly last year with a large number of new recruits to help us run the show. So going forward, we have identified a few areas that we really need help with – can you please ask your contacts and organizing committees and members as we need to fill these positions:
Children’s Events Co-ordinator – organizing the line-up of events which is pretty easy to do, and day of just making sure everything runs smoothly
Programs – this job takes more work in the last couple of months prior to the games, making sure all copy is submitted, having it put into a program and submitted to a printer.
Sponsorship/Advertising and promotion – Cher is going to do the social media aspect, Mary Jane may be around to help out again for sponsorship and advertising, but we need extra help. Someone to develop an advertising plan, to find new advertisers and sponsorships, and to be responsible for writing requests for grants and sponsorships from a list that the City of Coquitlam has provided.

Have had a lot of work with the Cancer Agency this week driving patients from their home to hospital and back. This week my pick ups were in Tsawwassen and South Delta and had to be in Vancouver for appointments at 8 and 9 so it was early starts for me. As one of the appointments was going to last 4 hours I managed to get out to Coquitlam to meet an Entertainment Director in a Seniors’ Home that wanted the Dem Team to perform. I was able to check the space available and other arrangements too.

The new mailing system comes with some interesting reports. I can see who opens the newsletter and who doesn’t and how many reach different countries round the world. You would be surprised that no newsletter goes to Myanmar but 1 goes to India, 5 to Hong Kong and 6 to Japan. Just over 50% (last week’s newsletter was 53.1%) open the e-mail so I will have to do a study to see if most of those who do not open the e-mail each week don’t open it any week.

Of course I should be outside, getting some fresh air, good exercise and helping prepare the garden for winter but it is so nice and cosy inside and I have lots of work to get done. Apart from lesson planning I have to get ready to be MC at the Vancouver Fiddle Orchestra’s concert next Saturday which will include getting the bios for the various performers as well as all the tunes the VFO will play and maybe a joke or two. Then as I am part of the Dem Team there are things to do for the Lady Aberdeen Tea Dance on Monday as we are hosting the event this year. I did a bit of leaf picking up and blowing yesterday but most people would not see any difference as the ground is covered again. Usually all the leaves are down from the deciduous trees by November 15 and although there has not been much wind that looks like being on target this year. The Cedars though are another question. They still have lots of brown on them that will come down eventually but they will just trickle down until we get a good windstorm to get the bulk of it down.

The next Ceilidh Dance is on Friday, November 29, 2013 with live music by Calanaish. You have time to spread the word about all the Ceilidh Dances as that is the best (and cheapest) form of advertising. It is great exercise and fun, for all ages, too. It really is never too late to come along and join in one of many Scottish Country Dance (SCD) classes and well any time is a great time to do it. You will be made very welcome. Many classes have a policy that the first night is FREE! Plan to come along to try out a class next week. There are classes all around and on different nights so GIVE IT A GO! For those who don’t know SCD is a fabulous pastime which is super exercise for body and mind. SCD is, naturally, rooted in Scotland but there are groups in almost every country so you can learn here and then dance with other groups when you vacation or travel. SCD is not to be confused with Highland Dancing which is more solo dancing. SCD is usually done with a partner in groups or sets however you do not need to come with a partner. It is more akin to Square Dancing. It takes a year or two of classes, workshops, etc. to learn the basics then you can hone your skills in advanced classes. You start by learning the steps and formations. Dances (of which there are over 13,000) are made up of these formations so a good grounding will give you the ability to learn a new dance fairly quickly. SCD has its HQ in Scotland and is known as the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS) and there is a Vancouver Branch of the RSCDS under which there are many clubs throughout the Province (there is also a Branch in Seattle). There are a great many classes and the ones in the Vancouver area are listed below.
Come along — check us out — the first night is usually free and thereafter it will average about $6 a night and that’s for a 2 hour class! You will find many friendly people who will be eager to help you and welcome you to their club. You never know you actually might like it!! Check the list of classes at either at www.vancouverceilidh.org or www.rscdsvancouver.org.

Thanks to good attendances the finances for the 2012/13 season will still allow the cost to be the amazingly low price of $10 or $8 for students and we provide refreshments although we do ask for your donations towards their cost. However if attendance remains as low as this season’s first two Ceilidh dances then either the price will go up and/or the dances will have to be cancelled.
We always need your support both by coming along and by helping us to advertise these dances by whatever means you use to communicate with your friends be it e-mail, Face-Book, Twitter, Text or even telephone! Most of you have been to at least one Ceilidh Dance so you know how it goes. You don’t need a partner; you don’t need any experience; you should wear FLAT soft soled shoes; we walk, talk, and call every dance and you should come to have fun and have a good evening of exercise and entertainment and maybe even to learn! There is a FREE class from 7 — 8 p.m. and the dance from 8 — 11 p.m. with music by Calanais.
Remember to bring some extra cash so you can make a donation towards the cost of the refreshments. Without these donations we will have to increase the price of admission again!!

Come along and get some great exercise while also having lots of fun. We are still working on improving the strength of the smile muscles as well as the bows and curtsies! Please do your best to assist us in letting as many people know as possible. Use Face-book, e-mail, telephone or even word of mouth and tell everyone you know what a fun night it is. We need to attract students from UBC, SFU and all the other colleges and universities. Somehow we have to get word out to these students. Please do all you can to help us.Come one, come all to the same place (Scottish Cultural Centre, 8886 Hudson Street, Vancouver) and the same time (7 p.m. for the class and 8 – 11 p.m. for the dance) and the same amazing price ($10 or $8 for students.) You should check the website – www.vancouverceilidh.org – from time to time as you can find various pages listing “Ceilidhs and Events;” Classes:” Duncan’s List;” etc. On these pages you can check all the upcoming events, where all the classes are located, times, etc. and some places to find Scottish things or some local trades, etc. I will continue to highlight the more current events in each week’s newsletter but, as stated, the calendar of all events will be available on the website. You should also have a look at the Vancouver Branch website from time to time – www.rscdsvancouver.org – as there is always useful information on it and it is a very good-looking site.

If you have any announcements please send them to me preferably in Word; Times New Roman 12pt format with a layout similar to the one used in this newsletter. I occasionally hear of an event somewhere in our beautiful Province, on the Island or in the Interior, but don’t know all the details.
This newsletter reaches out to some 425 subscribers (at long last we are over the 400 mark!) from all over the Province, Country and to many other countries as well, so please send me the details of your event and I will only be too happy to include them.
